Introduction:

As a leading state Health and Academic facility since 1927, the Steve Biko

Academic Hospital is confronted with state patients on a daily basis who simply

do not have the financial means to basic healthcare services. The Hospital Board

decided to go the extra mile to address the enormous need for additional medical

intervention (outside the GPG budget) and started the Health Programme in June

2009.

The History of the Programme:

The Health Programme was established to assist disadvantaged State patients to cover the cost of medical procedures not

funded by Government. The Hospital Board offered to aid clinically approved deaf patients with medical intervention and

expertise for the cochlear implant procedure and the first Cochlear implant was done in 2009. A constitution was signed

to govern the activities of this goodwill Programme in order to register itself as a Public Benefit Organization.
