Tennessee Tech University mechanical engineering major William Gaetjens, of Tullahoma, was recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship by his employer, Polymer Group, Inc. Gaetiens has been working at the Old Hickory, Tenn., company for the past several months on a co-op, or cooperative education, assignment. The award is in recognition of his outstanding performance. Gaetjens has put his mechanical engineering knowledge to use on projects that include compressed air dryers and wastewater recovery systems, saving the company more than $2 million in overhead. “Will was a hard worker, he was aggressive in learning new information, resolving problems and proactive in seeking opportunities to improve many areas of the plant,” said Michael Jacobs, Gaetjens’ supervisor and a project engineer at PGI. PGI specializes in nonwoven products for the hygiene, wipes, medical and industrial markets. The company has more than 3,000 employees worldwide. Students from all academic disciplines are eligible for the TTU co-op program, which is coordinated by the Office of Career Services. The office works regularly with hundreds of employers across the Southeast including business, industry, non-profit and government agencies to fit students’ career interests. “Co-op experience gives TTU students an edge as they get ready to start their careers, especially in a tough job market,” said Don Foster, Career Services associate director. “The experiential education program can help student develop skills and better discover what they want to do when they enter the workforce after graduation.” Tennessee Tech University, with an enrollment of approximately 11,400 students, has been selected as one of the nation’s 50 “Best Value” public colleges and universities and “Best Southeastern College” by The Princeton Review.
