The Solitary Islands Marine Park stretches over 75 km north from Muttonbird Island at Co s and incorporates five islands, rock outcrops, reefs, beaches, rocky shores and estuaries.

Over 550 species of reef fish have been observed within the sanctuary. It also supports a range of protected species such as the black cod, turtles, whales, shore birds and rare marine algae.

The glistening white tower of the historic lighthouse on South Solitary is easily spotted from the coast and was once one of NSW’s most isolated manned beacons.

Oh, and keep an eye out for migratory whales bursting up from below and dolphins cresting the waves - these splendid cetaceans and natural show-o s are what marine memories are made of.

The Co s Coast has a multitude of major attractions designed to delight all ages.

Remember those old holiday snaps? There is no doubt that Australia’s most celebrated “Big Thing” would have to be the Big Banana. This giant artificial fruit located just north of Co s has been welcoming families to the region for half a century.

Nowadays there’s plenty more to go bananas over, including the world’s largest inflatable waterslide, a spine-tingling toboggan ride, a state-of-the-art theatre experience and yes, even an ice skating rink. The Big Banana is now better than ever for a big day out - don’t forget to get your own snap by this famous Australian icon before you leave.

Head over to Dolphin Marine Magic to receive fishy kisses from a dolphin and a tickly smooch from a seal or

venture on to the Butterfly House in Bonville, one of only four in Australia. It’s a subtropical indoor haven for the world’s most remarkable insects.

There’s so much to do here on the Co s Coast that the only thing you’ll run out of is time.

The Co s Coast overflows with gourmet delights.

A mouthwatering abundance of locally sourced foods is complemented by inspiring dining locations.

This region is fast becoming the north coast’s culinary capital. Stylish restaurants, chic cafés, exotic cuisines and classic pubs abound - and there’s always the option of stocking up on gourmet goodies at a local grower’s market and rolling out a rug by a river.

Every type of produce imaginable thrives in this subtropical climate.

Savour wild caught seafood fresh from the Pacific, plump oysters from river estuaries, beef raised on some of Australia’s richest alluvial pastures and the sun-ripened fruits of a subtropical paradise. You've never tasted bananas, mangoes, avocados or macadamias like these.

In the sunny climes of the Co s Coast, outdoor dining is a year-round pursuit. Try the shaded tables at the cafés cosied up French style near the river in Bellingen’s Church Street or the rows of restaurants along Co s Creek and at the Jetty Precinct.

The pubs are great too – Dorrigo’s Heritage Hotel Motel is a perfectly preserved shrine to country hospitality, where even the counter lunches in the nostalgic dining room are at historic prices! Local sports, services and recrea-tional clubs are also excellent for a meal out that won’t break the bank.

Set amidst a thoroughly unspoiled band of green, gold and blue is one of NSW’s premier holiday destinations.

The region surrounding Co s Harbour is the traditional home of the Gumbaynggirr Nation, who thrived on the bounty of these superb subtropical marine, river and mountain environs.

The city is named for boatbuilder John Kor , who took refuge from a gale here in 1847 and gave rise to the founding of a port. Banana growing, celebrated by the iconic Big Banana, has been a feature of the region since the late 19th century.

For over ninety years, people have been coming to Co s Harbour to enjoy its natural delights.

Pleasures And TreasuresThis friendly and relaxed city on the surf looks out over the islands and reefs of the precious and world-renowned Solitary Islands Marine Park.

An irresistible range of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences complements Co s’ popular yet uncrowded beaches.

Located between sparkling ocean and verdant ranges, this is the perfect base from which to explore the delights of the Co s Coast.

Co s is surrounded by some of NSW’s best beaches. Start out at Sawtell to the city’s south and explore Diggers, Sapphire, Moonee and Emerald Beach to the north. Surfing, fishing, diving, canoeing and boating for those who like to get out on the water – or endless sands and quiet inlets for those who just like to walk, wade and let time dri away.

Big festivals and events are an intrinsic part of the Co s lifestyle. Each September, the Co s International Buskers and Comedy Festival brings to town some of the best pavement performers from around Australia and the world. In July, the Short Sharp Film Festival rolls out the red carpet for cinematic treats from far and wide.

Just south of Co s Harbour, this cosmopolitan beachside village set between two headlands is a favourite destination for visitors and locals alike.

Sawtell’s leafy main avenue with its enticing array of boutiques, cafés and restaurants is just a moment’s stroll from the popular two kilometre long ocean beach.

Split Café & Espresso Bar is especially popular with the local cycling crowd while Café TREEO o ers a tasty all-day breakfast. Set directly above the sands, the café at Sawtell’s surf lifesaving club provides al fresco eating with views to dine for.

With the calm waters of Boambee Creek to the north and Bonville Creek to the south, Sawtell abounds with opportunities to swim, fish, canoe or kayak. C-Change Adventures o ers kayak hire from Boambee Creek reserve and also runs a range of exciting tours.

Boambee and Bonville (Sawtell) Headlands are ideal for spotting migratory whales as they cruise by on their marathon trek (May to November) and are easily accessible by foot and vehicle.

At the southern end of Sawtell Beach is Sailors Bay, an area sheltered by a small island that can be reached at low tide. There is also a boat-launching ramp and tidal rock pools. On the south side of the

headland is Sawtell Memorial Rock Pool, providing the perfect protected location to cool o with a view.

Immerse yourself in nature with a walk or mountain bike ride along the well marked trails of Bongil Bongil National Park, an easy walk from Sawtell’s main street and adjacent to the ideally situated Sawtell Beach Holiday Park.

The Park o ers direct beach track access and the neighbouring aquatic centre, bowling, golf and tennis clubs make it a great holiday base for rest and recreation. The surrounding bushland is also home to a large range of native creatures.

This is classic beach vacation territory – without the crowds. The name Urunga derives from ‘Urungoo’ – a local Gumbaynggirr word meaning ‘a long spit of sand’ (perfect for long summer days!)

Just o the Pacific Highway, the relaxed villages of Urunga, Mylestom and Repton bring ocean and freshwater recreation within walking distance.

This is where the rivers meet the sea - locals will happily let you in on the secrets of the best places to fish, surf, watch the sun set or dolphins and whales cruise by.

Urunga opens out onto a tidal inlet complete with sandy shores and a magnificent kilometre-long wetlands boardwalk. Beyond is a staggering sweep of surf as Hungry Head beach reaches south (patrolled in holiday season).

Woolgoolga’s nostalgic holiday atmosphere inspires sauntering in the shallows at sunset, endless games of beach cricket and big barbecues with family and friends.

This is truly a leisure destination – what it lacks in theme parks and expensive resorts, Woolgoolga makes up for in a wealth of nature-based activities that won’t hurt your pocket.

Swimming, surfing, kayaking, mountain biking, horse riding and bushwalking are perennial favourites in a place that is naturally blessed.

There is more to Woopi (as the locals call it) than meets the eye. It also o ers a fascinating fusion of cultures that becomes apparent from the moment you spy the white domes of the Sikh temple at the highway turno .

For many years, Punjabi community members have brought the spice of Indian life to this Aussie beach town, flavouring local restaurants and culminating in the irresistible and hugely popular Curryfest each March.

More intrigue lies beyond. A flightless helicopter near the RSL on Turon Parade marks the entrance to the Woolgoolga Art Gallery, showcasing the works of regional artists.

Walk up to the impressive headland, where sweeping views across ocean and coast provide one of the premier whale watching spots in NSW. Mid year is renowned as peak hour for migratory tra c, but keep your camera (or binoculars) handy as there’s a good chance of sighting whales breaching and blowing any time between May and November.

Like many places that lie unmarked on the average tourist map, Woopi o ers a laid-back holiday experience laced with hidden pleasures.

From ocean to mountains, rivers to rainforest, it’s amazing what you can experience in a single day around the Co s Coast and its beautiful hinterland.

Bellingen – A Town for All TastesDrive south on the Pacific Highway, take the Waterfall Way exit and head to Bellingen. Build up an appetite canoeing on the Bellinger River, satisfy it at one of the many cosmopolitan cafés and wile away the a ernoon devouring the hippy meets high class delights of the local shops and galleries.

Just on the edge of town, a bevy of boutiques clustered around a charming rustic courtyard at the Old Butter Factory showcase the work of the region’s artists and artisans.

On the way back, detour to Raleigh Winery (o Old Pacific Highway) to sample locally grown pleasures of the vine.

Dorrigo – Waterfalls and Wilderness Head west through Bellingen and follow the iconic Waterfall Way up the rainforest-clad escarpment, with its roadside cascades and exhilarating views back across the valley. Before you reach the plateau town of Dorrigo, turn right to Dorrigo National Park and Rainforest Centre.

Discover the global significance of the World Heritage listed Gondwana rainforest, walk out across the treetops on the spectacular Skywalk and see unique birds, fauna

and flora on one of the ample walking trails. A timber suspension bridge at Crystal Falls leads to a track directly behind the tumbling waters.

More watery wonders await at Dorrigo - turn right up the main street and just a little way beyond town you will find the impressive Dangar Falls and a trail winding down to the river below.

Woolgoolga – Wonders of WoopiBeyond Co s Harbour, the inviting ocean villages and sands of Sapphire, Emerald, Moonee and Sandy Beach lead north to Woolgoolga (known as Woopi to the locals). Near Moonee Beach, take a stroll along Serenity Bay and over Look At Me Now headland to see kangaroos in their natural habitat.

You can’t miss the turno to Woopi, at which stands one of the coast’s most striking landmarks - the towering

white façade and minarets of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple. The town is renowned for its Punjabi culture and you can get a taste at the delectable annual Curryfest.

Continue through town to the headland, a favourite whale watching spot between May and November. A little further north is spectacular Arrawarra headland, with its rockpools, beaches and views over Solitary Islands Marine Park.

Head inland from Woolgoolga to visit the subtropical rainforest and sandstone ranges of Sherwood Nature Reserve (pack a picnic).

Bonville – Butterflies and BunkersVenture south on the Pacific Highway and take the Tourist Drive 18 exit to Bonville. Stop in to witness the wonders of metamorphosis and savour a Devonshire Tea at the Butterfly House on Strouds Rd.

Even if you aren’t a golfer, Bonville Golf Resort’s acclaimed course (voted the Australian mainland’s most beautiful for 12 successive years) is a fabulous place to pause for co ee or dine at the ‘chefs hatted’ Flooded Gums restaurant.

Back on the highway, turn le at Lindsays Rd and travel to Wood We Create Gallery where resident artist David Barden creates nature-inspired pieces from local and Australian timbers.

Sawtell – Sun, Surf and StyleTravel south down the Pacific Highway, take the Lyons Road o -ramp and follow the road until you come upon the stylish seaside village of Sawtell. Follow the signs up to Sawtell Headland, a panoramic lookout from where you can scan the waves for whales and dolphins. Cool o with a swim with a view in the adjacent Sawtell Memorial Rock Pool or sink into the expansive sands of Sawtell Beach.

The town’s leafy main strip boasts a browse-worthy collection of specialty shops and boutiques. A erward settle in for lunch at one of the award-winning restaurants and cafés under the shade of giant fig trees.

Repton/Mylestom – River and Rainforest R ‘n RContinuing south, take the Pacific Highway to the Repton/Mylestom exit.

Drive through Repton toward the beach and follow the dirt road through Bongil Bongil National Park, stopping o for a soul-reviving stroll on the one kilometre littoral rainforest walk (1km). Get the sand between your toes by walking behind the dunes to the point and back along the beach.

Just south of Repton is the popular fishing, water-skiing and holiday hamlet of Mylestom. Take a dip in the safety netted pool on the Bellinger River or hit the surf – they’re only a few hundred metres apart on this narrow sandy peninsular. There’s also a well-stocked local store for refreshments and plenty of shaded grass for a picnic with glorious river views.

Urunga – Rivers Meet the SeaA few kilometres further south along the Pacific Highway is the vilage of Urunga with its calm river lido and fascinating wetlands boardwalk. As you head across the bridge over the Kalang River, Anchors Wharf Café rests on the south bank below. Stop in at the Visitor Information Centre on your right and follow the road around to discover the town nestled along the inlet where river and ocean converge.

Stretching nearly a kilometre from riverbank to surf beach, the wetlands boardwalk o ers plenty of surprises from bustling crowds of blue-shelled crabs to myriad species of wetland birds.
