In the oil and gas industry, coiled tubing refers to metal

piping, normally 1" to 3.25" in diameter, used for

interventions in oil and gas wells and sometimes as

production tubing in depleted gas wells, however coil

tubing can perform almost any operation for oil well

    operations if used correctly.

Coiled Tubing comes spooled on a large reel and is

often used to carry out operations similar to wirelining.

The main benefits over wireline are the ability to pump

chemicals through the coil and the ability to push it

into the hole rather than relying on gravity.

A coiled tubing operation is normally performed

through the drilling derrick on the oil platform, which is

used to support the surface equipment, although on

platforms with no drilling facilities a self-supporting

tower can be used instead. It can also be run using

smaller service rigs, and for light operations a mobile

self-contained coiled tubing rig can be used.

Coil tubing has also been used as a less costly version of

work-over operations. It is used to perform open hole

drilling and milling operations. It can also be used to

    fracture the reservoir.

disconnected above a packer for zonal isolation, tubing

retrieval, and temporary zone abandonment. The neck of

the tool contains an internal lock profile for landing a

wireline plug to provide zonal isolation below the packer.

This tool has two main components, the overshot

mounted on the tubing string and the stinger mounted on

the packer. The overshot disengages with either a standard

left release or an optional right quarter-turn release. The

washover shoe on the overshot cuts through debris

allowing for easy engagement of the stinger. The seals in

the tool are retrieved with the overshot to enable

    redressing at the surface.

Applications Mechanical, hydraulic, or wireline-set packer

    completions

Temporary abandonment of lower zones Zonal isolation above the packer Tubing retrieval without disturbing the packer

Benefits Fits most standard Wireline nipple profiles. Available in most standard tubing and casing sizes

2013 Evolution Oil Tools Inc. All rights reserved. This document is uncontrolled when printed.

    27

Description The Retrievable Packer is a highly reliable tool designed

specically for coiled tubing conveyed applications. The

compact design features a built-in hydraulic set and lock

mechanism. Straight tension applied to the packer shears

the inner mandrel at a predetermined value, unsetting the

packer. The release mechanism operates independently of

the set mechanism resulting in a positive release. This

allows low release shear values to be used when string

tension is critical. The compact size allows a short lubricator

length for ease of deployment in live well operations.

To set the packer, simply apply air, nitrogen or uid

pressure to the tubing string until the specied differential

pressure at the tool is reached. The packer is equipped with

either a shear plug immediately below the packer or on the

tail joint end. Shear plugs are preset to apply the specied

pressure required to set the packer.

Applications Single or stacked production packer for permanent or

    temporary installations.

Straddle system for zone testing, selective stimulation or water shut-off.

Suitable for oil, gas or water wells.

Benefits Large thru-bore minimizes ow restrictions. Quick set, single trip reduces rig time. Suitable for multiple stacked packer applications. Sets with pressurized air, nitrogen, or uid. High tolerance for sandy well conditions. Can be redressed in the eld

  • Latching Seal Mandrel

    28

This document is uncontrolled when printed. 2013 Evolution Oil Tools Inc. All rights reserved.

Description The Latching Seal Mandrel was designed for efciency and

economy in the completion of segregated zone wells. The

mandrel is made up to the coiled tubing string using a slip-

type tubing connector or alternately, a roll-on nipple. A tail

joint and any required tools such as pump-out plugs or

landing nipples can be installed below the mandrel. The

coiled tubing string is run in the hole through the packer

prole, and as the mandrel passes through the packer bore,

the collet ngers collapse, allowing free passage of the seal

mandrel. Once through the packer, the collet ngers

prevent the seal mandrel from passing upward, securely

locating the Latching Seal Mandrel in place.

When clean-out procedures are nished, the primary string

is returned to the hang-off position relocating the mandrel

in the packer bore; thus reestablishing segregation. To

retrieve the mandrel from the well, simply over-pull to the

preset shear value and release the collet-retaining ring. This

allows the collet to collapse and the seal mandrel to pass

upward through the packer for removal from the well.

Applications Provides access to segregated zones for clean-outs or

other operations, without removing primary or

    secondary tubing strings

Benefits Cost-effective access to segregated zones using

existing permanent packer in the well.

Accurate tail joint placement at desired depths. Through-bore is same as coiled tubing ID, which

maximizes velocity string efciency by eliminating

    restrictions.

Eliminates retrieval of primary and secondary strings prior to well clean-out.

Saves time by eliminating extra trips.

2013 Evolution Oil Tools Inc. All rights reserved. This document is uncontrolled when printed.

    47

Description The Mechanical Style Work Window is installed above the

coiled tubing quad BOP or Coiled Tubing Hanger pack-off

element and ensures safe coiled tubing hang-off and other

coiled tubing operational procedures. After the coiled

tubing is landed at the desired depth, the annulus pressure

is controlled with the quad BOP or pack-off element on the

Coiled Tubing Hanger. Applied hydraulic pressure to the

internal hydraulic piston opens the window to expose the

coiled tubing. With the window open, equipment can be

safely installed onto the coiled tubing. Reversal of the

hydraulic pressure will return the window to its closed

    position.

Applications Allows access to the coiled tubing without

disconnecting the coiled tubing unit injector from the

    wellhead.

Benefits Safe working condition, as injector head remains xed

to the wellhead during hang-off operations.

Window offers large opening for ease of operations. Can be connected directly to the Coiled Tubing

    Hanger or above quad BOP.

Enables remote operation of window, eliminating the need for close proximity of personal to the wellhead.

Can be used in an H2S environment.

    49

Well Stimulation Overview Heavy oil inflow into the wellbore from unconsolidated

sandstone reservoirs can be restricted in several ways. The

restricting mechanisms can be difficult to identify and

effectively treat. Heavy oil wells with long perforated liners

also pose the challenge of low bottom hole pressure

causing lost circulation during intervention. One of the first

means of treating wellbore inflow problems is to apply an

effective wellbore clean out program. Evolutions well

cleaning technology effectively removes debris from the

wellbore while also applying direct hydraulic jetting

pressure to the casing wall and slotted perforations or

    screens.

Job Parameters Five extended reach horizontal heavy oil injection and

    producing wells.

Job design consisted of tubing lock up analysis, pump pressure calculations, tubing sizing, annular flow path

pressure drop prediction and tool string design.

This document is uncontrolled when printed. 2013 Evolution Oil Tools Inc. All rights reserved.

Description The Motorhead Assembly (MHA) is a compact, multi-use

coiled tubing service tool used in drilling, milling and other

workover operations. The tool features a dual circulation

sub, ball actuated disconnect and a dual flapper style back

    pressure valve assembly.

The dual circulation sub gives the operator two methods to

    re-establish circulation from the drill string to the annulus;

ball actuation or by means of a rupture disc.

The MHA ball disconnect provides a means of

disconnecting the work string from the bottomhole

assembly in the event the bottomhole assembly becomes

stuck. Once the disconnect is actuated, the remaining fish

left in the well has an exposed GS profile for ease of

reconnection with a subsequent recovery string.

The dual flapper back pressure valve prevents inflow from

the well to the tubing. This feature ensures that during an

unlikely event of surface pressure containment loss, well

fluids are prevented from escaping from the well through

    the work string.

Benefits Available for all coiled tubing sizes. Full bore prevents flow restrictions. High torque, tension, shock and vibration resistant

    design.

    63

Description The Non-Rotating Safety Shear Sub was developed for use

with stationary downhole equipment that develops

rotational torque. The shear sub is installed in the tool

string between the coiled tubing and the downhole tool.

An example would be an ESP (electric submersible pump),

run on small diameter coil, or polyethylene tubing, which

upon startup, if allowed to rotate, would cause twisting

and subsequent failure of the power cable

Applications Used as a safety sub in ESP installations to prevent

    twisting of cables.

Benefits Slim diameter maximizes annular ow area. High-strength steel alloy stop-pins provide high anti-

    rotational torque values.

Multiple shear screw locations provide a wide range of shear settings.

Minimal differential area reduces pressure-caused stress on shear screws.

Undercut shear screw holes prevent cutting of O-ring during assembly.

Description The Flapper Check Valve is connected to the coiled tubing

to eliminate ow back of uids or gas through the tubing

string. The spring loaded apper valve provides maximum

ow area, while providing high performance sealing

capability. The Flapper Check Valve is frequently run on

drilling motor tool strings for workover and completion

operations. The Flapper Check Valve provides safe

operation when running coiled tubing into high-volume,

high-pressure, or H2S environments. When run above

mechanical or hydraulic release tools, the Flapper Check

Valve design allows the passage of disconnect balls.

    65

Description Fishing tools are designed to engage with items that were

not originally designed to be engaged such as items

without an engagement profile. In many cases, the items

are lost or broken off pieces of tool strings or coiled tubing.

These items have to be engaged either internally or

externally. A bar or rod sticking up would call for an

overshot tool; a pipe or other large bore could be caught

with a spear. Both the overshot and the spear cut into the

metal of the fish to engage with it.

  • Pneumatic Hammer

This document is uncontrolled when printed. 2013 Evolution Oil Tools Inc. All rights reserved.

Description The Pneumatic Hammer delivers downward impact when

forces greater than tubing weight is required. This is

benecial when retrieving bridge plugs or other tools

requiring downward force to release. The hammer can be

powered with air, nitrogen or foam. The Pneumatic

Hammer uses low volumes and pressures; thus it is well-

suited for use with coiled tubing units outfitted with self-

    contained-compressors.

Applications Equipment in the well that requires a downward force

    to be released

Benefits Powered by air, nitrogen or foam. Requires low volumes and pressures to operate. Well-suited for coiled units with self-contained

    compressors.

Compact length. Locked connections to prevent thread back-off.

    67

Description The Hydraulic Setting Tool is a pressure-activated setting

tool used to set wireline retrievable plugs, permanent

packers, bridge plugs, cement retainers or other types of

completion equipment. The setting tool is connected to

the end of the coiled tubing and run to depth. Pressuring

up the tubing string activates the hydraulic pistons. The

force multiplies as the pressure passes through each piston

stage, providing the needed force to set the downhole

equipment. Once the equipment is set, the ports of the

setting tool are open, allowing the well to be pressure

tested or circulated and providing pressure equalization of

the tubing/annulus prior to retrieval of the coiled tubing

    string.

Applications A running tool used to set packers and other

    equipment in the well.

Benefits Multiple stage pistons eliminate high-activation

    pressures.

Can be run with jointed tubing or coiled tubing. Easy eld service.

Description Evolution Oil Tools Retrievable Bridge Plug is a wireline or

hydraulic set bridge plug, used to temporarily seal tubulars

in any situation where a bridge plug is to be run and

retrieved under pressure. The Bridge Plug combines the

advantages of wireline accuracy with simple and reliable

retrieval. The Retrievable Bridge Plug is commonly used for

zonal isolation during well testing, fracturing, acidizing, or

    wellhead repair.

The Retrievable Bridge Plug utilizes one-piece double-grip

slips that hold securely against pressure from above and

below the plug. A calibrated setting shear stud assures

consistent pack-off performance, as well as retrieval

    reliability at any depth.

  • Permanent Drillable Bridge Plug

  • Small WR Retrievable Tubing Packer

    70

This document is uncontrolled when printed. 2013 Evolution Oil Tools Inc. All rights reserved.

Description The Small WR Retrievable Tubing Packer combines the

advantages of a wireline set permanent packer with the

versatility of a retrievable packer. This reliable packer is

suited for most production, testing or stimulation

applications. This packer is run in and set hydraulically on

    jointed or coiled tubing.

    Operation

To Set The packer is run to depth, and pressure is applied to the

setting tool. Pressure is bypassed into the setting chamber

of the packer, which applies the correct and proper setting

force. Once set, downward force releases the setting tool

    from the packer.

To Retrieve A standard GS Pulling Tool run on coiled tubing or wireline

is used to automatically latch into the packer. A straight

pull equalizes and releases the packer.

Benefits The packer is not affected by tubing expansion or

contraction forces, as packer cannot be accidentally

    unset.

One-piece double acting slips securely hold the packer against pressure differentials.

The setting force is applied directly to the elements, ensuring a full and hard pack-off.

Packer locking mechanism is located in the protected annular area.

Simple and reliable straight pull releasing system.
