You can always see the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal in the choir of the Holy Cross Church.

With the founding of the county Portugal, Count Henry and Queen Teresa of Leon make their residence and future first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, born away from the walls. King A.Henriques made it the first capital of the country, it remained until 1255 when the Lisbon replace in this role.

The municipality also has a coastline on the west, the Atlantic Ocean, which gives it a certain reputation for its great sand beach: a praia da Claridade, which is regularly organized on the mini world beach soccer.The town, built in the twentieth century lives especially with its fishing port (sardines and cod) and the activity of its shipyards. A modern neighborhood built in the west focuses tourist entertainment. This is one of the busiest resorts in Portugal.
