A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

The obverse of the coin features on the left: the icon of Virgin Mary with Three Hands kept at the Troyan Monastery; on the right (one below the other): the nominal value “10 ЛЕВА” (10 levs), the BNB logo with the year “1879” on the strip, and (perpendicularly underneath) the year of issue “2014”; the inscription “БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА” (Bulgarian National Bank) in semicircle. The reverse features the monastery complex and the inscriptions “ТРОЯНСКИ МАНАСТИР” and “УСПЕНИЕ БОГОРОДИЧНО” (Troyan Monastery and the Assump-tion of Virgin Mary) in semicircles.

A brief annotation The Troyan Monastery is Bulgaria’s third largest after those in Rila and Bachkovo, and is stauropegic: subordinated directly to the Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It stands close to the town of Troyan in the comely Balkan Mountain valley of the Cherni Osam. A monastic chronicle of 1835 attributes its institution to 1600, yet its origins most likely go back to the emergence of Troyan in the late 14th and early 15th Centuries at the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire and the early Ottoman period. During the 18th and 19th Centuries, the Monastery was a great centre of learning and letters, with a junior and secondary schools later joined by a monastic academy. During the 1877–78 War of Liberation, the cloisters housed a field hospital. The Monastery is a notable example of National Revival Period architecture. Its oldest building is the Church of the Sveti Nikola Skete (1812). The main Monastery Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary was built between 1835 and 1837 by the Maystor Konstantin of Peshtera near Kyustendil. In 1865, the Maystor Ivan of Mlechevo near Sevlievo added a five-storey bell tower with a chapel at its foot.Declared a Monument of Culture as long ago as 1927, the Church contains remarkable murals by Zahariy Zograf (1810–1853). For the first time during the National Revival period, he painted the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, alongside a multitude of Bulgarian and Slavic saints and historical figures. Zahariy painted his self-portrait in a window reveal, as well as that of the Abbot Philoteas. The carved iconostasis made by the Maystor Petar Rezbar of Gabrovo and Maystor Nikola Mateev of Novo Selo near Sevlievo in 1838–1839 is also emblematic of National Revival art. The Church contains the Monastery’s oldest icon: Virgin Mary with Three Hands. The icon was brought to the Monastery in the 17th Century. The Troyan Monastery has a large museum. The cell where Vasil Levski hid is also preserved.

A brief annotation On 8 September 1514, the armies of two great duchies — Lithuania and Moscow — faced each other at the battle of Orsha. This was the most significant event in the wars between Lithuania and Moscow at the end of the 15th c. - early 16th c. Both armies met not far from the GDL castle of Orsha. The battle took place on 8 September — the date of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At this decisive stage, the army of the GDL was under the command of Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski. He was, after this battle, lauded as a great military leader, because it was his decisions that led to success in the battlefield. The Battle of Orsha was a military and diplomatic victory of the Jagiellon dynasty. Orsha remained as a symbol of victory; it was remembered in all of the recur-ring wars with Russia.

A brief annotation This iconic legal tender was launched in 1967. It contains one troy ounce of pure gold. In 1980, the fractional Krugerrands – of 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz – were added to this historic coin series. The design on the obverse of each of the four coins dates back to the county’s first circulation coin series introduced in 1892 by the then President of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek, Paul Kruger. The name “Krugerrand” comes from Paul Kruger and the rand, the monetary unit of South Africa, which is associated with the Witwatersrand, “the ridge of white water”, the gold-pro-ducing area discovered in 1886. Although Krugerrands are legal tender, they have never recorded a face value. The value of each coin is directly related to the prevailing value of its gold content. Today, Krugerrands are issued as bullion coins and as proof quality collectors’ coins.

A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

The motifs that had to be portrayed on the coins were the following: “...the said full excelentes shall portray on the one side our Royal Arms, clasped by an Eagle, and surrounded by lettering that states: Sub umbra alarum tuarum protege nos, and on the other side two facial likenesses, each including the shoulders, one being of the King, and the other being of the Queen, each in accordance with the other, and surrounded by letters stating: Ferdinandus et Elisabeth Dei gratia Rex et Regina Castellae et Legionis…”“…and the reales shall portray on the one side our Royal Arms, and on the other side the device of the King’s yoke, and the device of the Queen’s arrows, surrounded by the statement and continuing on both sides: Ferdinandus et Elisabeth Rex et Regina Castellae, et Legionis, et Aragonum, et Siciliae, et Granatae, or as much of this as can be included…”The obverse reproduces, within a circle centered on the coin, the obverse of a Real coin issued by the Catholic Monarchs and minted in Burgos. With the classic coin equivalent of eight reales, this coin devotes its entire reverse ground to a reproduction of the Real coin issued by the Catholic Monarchs and minted in Burgos.

A brief annotation The Fifth issue in this series of collector coins entitled “Numismatic Treasures” is dedicated to the Pragmatica y Reales Ordenanzas (the Pragmatic and Royal Ordinances) promulgated in Medina del Campo in 1497 by the Catholic Monarchs.Spain’s modern monetary history originated with the reform proclaimed by the Catholic Mon-archs in the above-mentioned 1497 Pragmatic, that would set values for and stabilize the char-acteristics of the gold and silver coins (the excelente, the medio excelente and the silver real) that were allowed to be minted by the different mints in the Spanish peninsula, together with the coin designs and rates of exchange with the coinage of other European countries, particularly with those lying within the area of the ducat which, having been created in Venice, had become unrestricted coinage in the Mediterranean area.

A brief description of the obverse and reverse images

The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. This rare 2-ounce fine silver coin is timeless, both in the subject it depicts as well as its engraved design. Painstakingly rendered with great attention to historical accuracy and de-tail, the reverse presents a dynamic portrait of a 1914-era steam train in motion across the Canadian landscape. A long cloud of steam billows up from the locomotive’s smokestack and hangs in the air over the wooden passenger cars, conveying the speed at which the train is travelling to reach its destination. The unique vantage point from the shoreline, just below Saskatoon’s Grand Trunk Bridge, also adds a sense of grandeur to a classic scene while recapturing the excitement and awe of a bygone era.

A brief annotation It was the golden era of railways in Canada and an impressive engineering feat in its day: a century ago, eastern Canada was linked by rail to the Pacific thanks to the completion of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, as meticulously depicted on the reverse. More than a transcontinental transportation system, this railway opened up vast areas of central and western Canada to settlement and ultimately helped shape Canada as it is known today; this coin is both a commemoration of this milestone’s centennial, and a proud testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of Royal Canadian Mint engravers.

Belarusians see bullfinch as a special kind of Prometheus, who brought down fire on Earth - a modest, small and original gray bird. According to the legend, the bullfinch executes an order given by God - to bring fire from heaven to earth. None of the birds and animals could fulfill the divine order. And only the bullfinch dealt with this, he took fire on the sky and flew with it to the ground. However, all along the road on high the fire severely burned breast and neck of the bullfinch.
