The BritishCouncil is an independent body incorporated by royal charter. It possesses greatexperience in the teaching of English which it applies when inspecting schools.Accredited schools can choose to be a member of EnglishUK which is a non-profitmaking professional association of more than 350 schools and organisations. It has a strict code of conduct and issues guidelines on matters of education andwelfare to all schools. The Centre is the ideal English language school for the foreign student whowishes to make rapid progress in their knowledge of the English language. Many years of experience ensure high standards of course design, teaching,welfare and accommodation for both the general and professional student. TheCentre is a large school, open all year with excellent modern facilities to provideEnglish language courses of the very highest quality.

The town of Colchester is the perfect location for students who wish to study ina smaller town but not too far from London and the major airports. Stansted isjust 40 minutes away by bus. As the Centre is the only all-year accreditedprivate English language school in the town, students are assured of specialattention from staff and host families at all times.

Colchester, with its attractive mixture of the old and the new, has become homefor many thousands of students over the years who have completed their Englishlanguage programmes at the Centre and made new friends with the people ofthe town.

The Centre is ten minutes’ walk from the middle of thetown where students can enjoy a lively shopping centreor wander through narrow lanes to visit the smallerboutiques and cafés. Those interested in the arts canvisit the Mercury Theatre, the Odeon multi-screencinema and other superb arts and music venues.

In addition, the town has a large number of modernsports centres which, together with a vibrant night life,provide the very best in leisure and entertainment.

Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town and firstcapital with much to offer the foreign visitor. Althoughlocated in the heart of the pretty Essex countryside and just a short distance from a beautiful unspoiledcoastline, Colchester is only fifty minutes by train fromthe heart of London. The historical towns of Cambridgeand Norwich are within easy reach.

For the last 2000 years, Colchester has played a majorrole in some of the most important events in Englishhistory. Whilst London was still a small trading post,the Romans decided to establish their capital inColchester. One thousand years later, the French built a fine castle on the a site of the old Roman temple.Today the castle houses a museum which tells much of the history of the town and is the most importanttourist attraction in the region.

The Centre is open to students aged 16 years and older,offering a good mix of ages and nationalities throughout theyear. Students come from a variety of educational andprofessional backgrounds but all have the same aim ofstudying hard and improving their English. They are providedwith a great deal of help by the Centre’s experienced staffand great care is taken in providing information about allaspects of their course. Teaching takes place in a relaxed andprofessional atmosphere in small multi-national groups, withclasses being taught by experienced and qualified teachers,many of whom have worked at the Centre for a long time.

COURSESThe Centre offers a range of General English programmesfrom beginner to advanced level which students can join onevery Monday of the year. These programmes can becombined with options in Business English, ExtraConversation or Extra Writing.

In addition, there are year-round Pre-Sessional Courses inEnglish for Academic Study for students who need to preparefor further studies at colleges and universities in the English-speaking world or to achieve a good score in the IELTSexamination.

The Centre has considerable experience in arranging coursesin Specialised English, which can be organised at any timeof year, depending on a client’s wishes and needs. Individualstudents can combine General English courses withspecialised one-to-one lessons on a range of ProfessionalCourses.

Teacher Training Courses can be organised at any time of theyear for particular groups based on their special requirements,or individual teachers can join Summer Teachers’ Courseswhich combine advanced language improvement with thevery latest ideas on teaching.

Group Courses can be organised on request, and the Centrecan provide a complete package, including the teachingprogramme, accommodation, airport transfers and a range ofexcursions and activities, depending on the requirements andbudget of a client.

EXAMINATIONSThe Centre is an official Centre for the University ofCambridge Main Suite examinations [KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE and BEC] and IELTS which is organised twice a month.Students can sit for these examinations at the Centre. In addition, there are courses which prepare students forthese exams.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCEFree advice and assistance with university entrance is offered forstudents who are seeking further study in the UK, at foundation,undergraduate and postgraduate level.

PRIVATE STUDY The Centre has four private study rooms for students topractise their English before and after class, with no chargebeing made for using these facilities.

The Listening Centre contains a wide selection of cassettesand audio CDs for students to improve their listening andspeaking skills. All material is colour-coded to help studentsfind material at the correct level.

The Video and DVD room allows students to choose from arange of material, including feature films, TV shows andEnglish language programmes.

25 student computers allow free internet access, free laserprinting and a range of interactive computer programmes for improving English. Students with a wireless enabledlaptop computer can enjoy free internet access, anywhere inthe Centre.

The Centre’s library has many books and magazines and alsoallows students a place for quiet further study before andafter class. Students may also borrow books for study athome. All of these private centres are open from 0730 to1730 every weekday.

LEVELS OF ENGLISHAfter an initial level test and interview, students’ progress inEnglish at the Centre is carefully monitored. They areregularly assessed during their course to make sure that theyare in the correct class in order to help them achieve thehighest possible level of English. In addition, students cantest their level of English at www.cesc.co.uk

All class levels are based on the Common EuropeanFramework of Language Levels. There are seven levels ofEnglish. Each level will take about eight weeks to complete

Accommodation and student services

ACCOMMODATIONLiving in an English family (homestay) is the best wayfor students to improve their spoken English and learnabout English family life. The Centre has a largenumber of local host families who are carefully selectedby our Accommodation Officer to meet the specialneeds and requirements of individual students.

All our families take a close interest in the welfare oftheir student guests and over the years, many firmfriendships have been formed. As the Centre is the onlyall-year private accredited school in Colchester, it isable to choose the best and most experienced families.

Hotel and guesthouse accommodation may beavailable on request

Students are provided with half board by their hostfamilies, but can choose from a range of low-cost mealsoffered by the school’s cafeteria at lunchtime. Snacksand drinks can also be purchased from vendingmachines during the day.

AFTER CLASS ACTIVITIESThe Centre's full and free daily social programme andrecreational facilities allow students the opportunity torelax after class. The spacious garden provides apleasant recreation area and in summer barbecues areregularly held on the patio. Students can play tabletennis, pool billiards and a variety of board games.

A selection of clubs, sporting events and talks organisedby the Centre during the week is supplemented by lowcost excursions at the weekends. More excursions areorganised in the summer than in the winter.

The social and activities programme takes the needs of all students into account to ensure that their stay in Colchester is a happy and successful one.

LIVING WITH A FAMILY

• Students usually live with an English family whenstudying at the Centre

• Colchester English Study Centre is the only all yearEnglish Language School in the town and so wecan select the very best families

• Families provide a single comfortable studybedroom, a good breakfast and dinner and allmeals at the weekend

MAIN COURSE

• Course in general English. Students cover alllanguage skills with a special emphasis onspeaking and listening

• Students may start on any Monday during the year

• Minimum stay of two weeks

• 20 x 50-minute lessons a week in internationalgroups of up to 13 students

• Courses run at seven levels from beginner (A0) toadvanced (C1). Each level takes approximatelyeight weeks to complete

• Beginners are accepted but may be given only 10 lessons a week of one-to-one lessons until theycan join a group

• Students are tested on arrival at the Centre andcounselled every four weeks with regular tests

• Students can sit a University of CambridgeExamination, PET, FCE, CAE, BEC, at the Centre

• There is a level and attendance certificate at theend of the course

• Students receive help from their teachers and theDirector of Studies about their progress throughthe course levels

BUSINESS ENGLISH

IELTS PREPARATION COURSE

• Course for students who need to learn Englishbecause they are going to study at an Englishschool, college or university

• Students may start on any Monday during the year

• Minimum stay of two weeks

• 25 x 50 minute lessons a week in internationalgroups of up to 13 students

• The following skills are covered: reading atdifferent speeds, academic writing, speaking atlength on academic topics, interview preparation,academic listening

• Students are prepared for the IELTS test inAcademic English for British universities

• The Centre is an IELTS test centre and tests areheld every two weeks. Test bookings must be made five weeks in advance

• Students must have an upper intermediate level(B2) to join this course

IELTS AND UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

IELTS is the examination in Academic English whichis required by many universities and colleges ofhigher education throughout the English-speakingworld as proof of a suitable language level. Indeed, it may also be accepted as a qualification to allowprofessionals to work in the health sectors in differentcountries where English is used. It is not anexamination that students pass or fail, but providesthe candidate with a level in English from 1 to 9. For example to study at postgraduate level in the UK,students need normally to achieve a level of 6.5,depending on their chosen course of study.

FIFTY PLUS COURSES (for the moremature student)

This course is for students who would like to exploresome of English culture as well as learning thelanguage.

Colchester English Study Centre is now able tooffer two-week English courses that will provideyou with the perfect combination of an intensiveEnglish Language Course, together with activities andexcursions to make your time in England moreenjoyable. This course is for students with a level ofEnglish at A2 (pre-intermediate) or above.

The two-week Fifty plus courses can be taken onfixed dates in May and September, and the followingis a typical programme (CESC reserves the right tooffer a similar programme of the same value):

• Sunday – arrival and move into accommodation

• Monday to Friday – 4 x 50-minute lessons eachmorning in international groups no greater than 13 in size

• Monday – welcome pub lunch and a drink.Discover Roman Colchester. Afternoon guided tourwith entrance to Colchester Castle and museum

• Tuesday – visit to Wilkins Jam Factory followed bytea at the Tiptree Jam Museum

• Wednesday – afternoon excursion to Constablecountry with tour guide, including famous Englishvillages and the birthplace of John Constable,England’s best-known landscape painter

• Thursday – talk about London to prepare forSaturday excursion. Evening barbecue and party atthe Centre including food and a drink

• Friday – fish and chip lunch and a drink

• Saturday – whole day excursion to London with aguide. Walking tour of central London –Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Squareand Covent Garden

• Sunday – whole day excursion to Cambridge.Guided walking tour by Cambridge guide withentrance to colleges

• Monday to Friday – 4 x 50-minute lessons eachmorning in international groups no greater than 13 in size

• Monday – visit to Colchester Town Hall. Evening atMercury Theatre

• Tuesday – half day visit to Ipswich

• Wednesday – visit to Beth Chatto gardens

• Thursday – visit to Wivenhoe quay by train

• Friday – certificate presentation. Tea at the George Hotel

TESTING AND MATERIALS

For this course, students must take a language testonline at www.cesc.co.uk before they come, so thatthey can be placed in the correct level when theyarrive after a short interview on the Monday of theircourse. Students receive all teaching materials,including a textbook and a file which is theirs tokeep. There is free library and internet use and allstudents receive a leaving certificate showing theirlevel at the end of their course.

ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONALS

Perhaps you are a busy professional person whoneeds to improve the English you need for your work.As well as developing your knowledge of generalEnglish, you probably need to study the specialisedlanguage you need for your job. For example, doctorsmay need to talk to patients and other doctors,bankers need to be familiar with the language ofaccountancy and finance, whilst lawyers mustunderstand how English is used to draw upspecialised contracts. If you are in business, you mayneed to take part in meetings, mix socially and writereports and emails.

To provide the right mixture of general andspecialised English, Colchester English Study Centrerecommends that you follow a Professional EnglishCombination Course. This combines 20 x 50-minutelessons of general English each week at the correctlevel in international groups with 5 or 10 privatelessons each week, which focus on specialisedEnglish. This option is available for two weeks ormore. The combination of an international groupprogramme with very focused one-to-one classes is anefficient, enjoyable and cost-effective way of ensuringrapid improvement in your professional English skills.

Of course a fully tailor-made one-to-one option may beappropriate if you have a specific target and limitedtime. This option is available for one week or more.

Students can start these courses on any Monday. A detailed questionnaire will ensure that theprogramme is fully tailor-made to meet theprofessional’s individual requirements.

The Cambridge University English for Speakers ofother Languages (ESOL) examinations (CambridgeAssessment) are the best known throughout theworld and can be taken three times a year at theCentre. The Centre offers the Preliminary English Testat intermediate level, First Certificate in English atupper intermediate level and the CambridgeAdvanced Certificate at advanced level.
