alpha and omega This list is not normal, I’m thrilled to say that. This is more like a group of wine lists stuck together. Each functioning on its own like a little planet. It’s not a seamless progression through bubbles, then aromatics then into reds, it’s more, deconstructed, for want of a less annoying word. Hopefully it makes you look at lots of the pages instead of just turning to your favourite grape. Not to be a wanker about it, but wine lists can be pretty full on. Loads of wines from across the globe and you have a few minutes to decide, in between ordering a beer and mineral water, and talking to your guests. It might be a work lunch and you want to impress, it could be a date and you’re worried about how you look. All I’m saying is there’s a lot going on and this page will be the easiest path to comfort. Thousands of eyes have poured over the wine list and these two came out on top. If you are confident in your fellow diners decision making, you can choose one of these. If you don’t trust them, keep turning.

This is a category of champagne that are basically the craft beer equivalent of bubbly wine. They grow their own grapes, as opposed to the much more common situation of buying grapes in from lots of different growers, as the big companies do. It feels as though there is a revolution taking place, and these grower champagnes are seen to be at the very forefront of quality, site expression and character. I know it’s a big heading for only a few wines, but I think they deserve it. nv egly ouriet brut tradition grand cru bouzy 190 nv chartogne-taillet champagne le rose merfy 125

for gulliver maybe it should be ‘for liliput’, but I like the sound of Gulliver more. Little bottles for lots of fun sparkling

nv collet brut ay, france 55 2014 express winemakers grizz fizz (500ml) mount barker, wa 36 This is Pet Nat (Petillant Naturale). it means it has been fermented in bottle the old school way. It’s made from Riesling fermented on Gewurztraminer skins. It’s out there. There is sediment in the bottle, so it may become cloudy. Treat this more like cider. It’s savoury, aromatic and has lychee and grapefruit elements. It’s a little whack and can be challenging. It’s also kinda fun.

The following wines are fortified which means they have had alcohol added to fortify them.

the wine region of rutherglen is one of australia’s oldest wine producing zones. the fortified wines that are produced there are a national treasure, being among the richest & long lived wines on the planet. historically this style of wine was at the heart of the australian wine industry & this small region on the border of nsw & victoria is the last bastion of this icon style. the region has employed a system of classifying these amazing wine with the terms rutherglen, classic, grand & rare each signifying minimum age & levels of residual sugar.

i’ve decided to give my own rating based on how much i like them. * = drink lots and let some dribble down my chin because it’s delicious ** = i don’t care if i ruin my shirt, just get it in me *** = stand back, i’m taking my clothes off and diving in the vat

the secret song

remember when a track would just keep playing silently and then a secret song would appear, well, this is the wine equivalent of that. whilst there is nothing secret about ‘other’ wine from europe, it has certainly been something that we haven’t included on our list very much. why? mainly because there is such variety in what we produce in australia and can access from italy it hasn’t been a focus for us. so why do it now i hear you think – yes i can hear your thoughts. the simple answer is that when i taste a delicious wine, I want everyone to taste it too. secondly, i thought the time was right. so here it is, a small selection of deliciousness from other parts of the world. the selection might stay this small, it might get bigger, whatever the size, it will always be very tasty.

A word about me. I’m the “I” in all the notes. I’ve worked in restaurants and in the wine industry for over 18 years. I now write, teach and talk about anything to do with things you drink. It’s a lot of fun, I hope you like it too.
