Administrator’s Message
Another year is upon us already! From what I have seen this week, students are happy to
be back (to see their friends!) and I’m sure, deep down, to get back to the business of
learning! We have a busy 3 months ahead before Spring Break; the Grade 7/8 trip to
Quebec, basketball and badminton seasons, downhill skiing trip, Festival du Voyageur
week, the many interesting and worthwhile educational activities and report cards at end
of March. Important dates to note are Kindergarten Information night (Jan. 25 @
6:30 – tell your friends!) and Kindergarten Registration Day (Feb. 1, throughout the
day).
On December 21, we were happy to recognize our 5-8 students who achieved the pillars
for our Complete Student award. This year there were only 4 pillars to attain; “Parler
Français”, Respectful Citizenship, Academic and Teamwork. In brainstorming with our
students, we realized that many of the characteristics for some of the pillars from last
year overlapped. The teachers and students decided that if students attained the 4
above-mentioned pillars, they were indeed complete students.
For the academic pillar, we want to celebrate progress as well as excellence. If a student
did not necessarily attain the 80% average however did demonstrate excellent academic
behaviors (work completed on time to the best of his/her ability, interest and engage-
ment in the work, excellent classroom behavior), students may have been awarded the
academic pillar. We want to commend the efforts of those students who were able to
close the gap in reaching grade level outcomes and have gone above and beyond in making
their school experience a most positive and beneficial one. We want to encourage stu-
dents to continue to do their best and be encouraging to others to push themselves to
the best of their abilities. We recognize the importance of these awards and the im-
portance of students being aware of expectations and what they can work on in order to
be successful. Good luck Gr. 5-8 students in the next term! We are confident that you
will put your best foot forward and continue to work towards the goals you have set for
yourselves!
We continue to recognize our Gr.1-4 students at our assemblies through our school vir-
tues and “Parler Français”. We are always so very proud of
their accomplishments and their progress in their goal-setting.
Lastly, I would like to thank Mme Shelley Lavergne who will be
ending her term on January 20. Mme Lavergne was instrumental
(pun intended!) in delivering a quality music program to our stu-
dents in Mme Jègue’s absence. We will miss you! Please come
back and visit often!
As always good communication is key to the success of the
school! If you have any questions, ideas or concerns, please con-
tact me and I will be happy to address those with you. Happy
New Year! Stay warm!

Please read… Should your child/children be going home with another student/parent, a phone call must be made to the school to
let us know of that change. Students will not be allowed to
leave the school premises until such time that we have re-ceived a call. Thank you for your cooperation!
Lunch Time All students, Kindergarten to Grade 8, are to remain on the school grounds during the school day unless they have per-mission on occasion from parents or a teacher to leave the grounds. At lunch time, K – 4 students residing less than 0.6
KMs from school, and Grades 5 to 8 students residing less than 1.6 KMs from school, may go home for lunch. Trans-
ported students need a note from their parents to leave the school grounds and if they do have permission to leave the school grounds, they must be accompanied by an adult. Regularly transported students who come to school by bicycle
in the Fall and Spring are still considered transported students. They, therefore, require notes to leave at lunch time as above. We want to ensure students are safe and back to school on time.

We are a Nut Safe School
Some students in our school have allergies. In any
classroom there are occasions where food may be
present (ie: class parties, science experiments,
TUSC, etc.) Please be mindful that allergens (tree
nuts, strawberries, eggs, gluten) may cause severe
reactions and may be life-threatening to some.
Please check at the office or with your child’s home-
room teacher if you have any doubts or questions
regarding food that is brought to school. Thank you
for your consideration in this matter.

Please note that some teachers at ESNI have their own class website, with plenty of useful information. To access your child`s teacher`s website, please follow the following steps:

Roots of Empathy By Taylor and Cruz
We learnt about diapers this visit. In a diaper bag
there is a change pad, lots of diapers, baby wipes
and a soother. Baby Noah spit up on Mme. Francine
because he wasn’t comfortable.

PINK DAY SHIRT ORDER FORM École St. Norbert Immersion is participating in the Canadian Red Cross Pink Day on April 12, 2017. Canadian Red Cross Pink Day is an initiative that provides students, staff and the community with the opportunity to discuss the impact of bullying and how they can create a safe and respectful school environment. Students and staff are invited to wear pink shirts in solidarity to show that bullying is unacceptable and to stand for respect. To order your child’s Pink Day shirt, please return the attached order form to your child’s teacher by January 31, 2017. Each youth size shirt is $8.40, while each adult size shirt is $9.04 (both prices include applicable taxes.) To learn more about the Canadian Red Cross Pink Day, visit www.redcross.ca/PinkMB_NU.

Occupational
therapy
At School & Home
WHAT DO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS DO?
Occupational therapy is a skilled health, rehabilitation, and
educational service that helps people across the lifespan par-
ticipate in the things they want and need to do through the
therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations).
An school based OT provides assessment and consultation to
enable individuals to participate in day-to-day activities as in-
dependently as possible. These activities may include self-care
activities (such as eating, sleeping, dressing, grooming, or toilet-
ing), fine motor skills, leisure activities, and classroom skills. Hand-
writing problems and visual perceptual difficulties are also ad-
dressed in school-aged children.
CANADIAN 24-HOUR MOVEMENT
GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH: An Integration of Physical Activity, Seden-
tary Behaviour, and Sleep
These guidelines were announced this year and are
relevant to apparently healthy children and youth,
aged 5 –17 years, irrespective of gender, race, eth-
nicity , or the social-economic status of the family.
Children and youth should practice healthy sleep
hygiene (habits and practices that are conducive
to sleeping well), limit sedentary behaviours
(especially screen time), and participate in a range
of physical activities in a variety of environments
(e.g., home/school/community; indoors/outdoors;
land/water; summer/winter) and contexts (e.g.,
play, recreation, sport, active transportation, hob-
bies, and chores).
These guidelines may be appropriate for children
and youth with a disability or medical condition;
however, a health professional should be consulted
for additional guidance.
The specific guidelines and more details on the back-
ground research informing them, their interpretation,
guidance on how to achieve them, and recommen-
dations for research and surveillance are available at
www.csep.ca/guidelines.
Tips for Establishing Bedtime Routines
If you want to: Consider these activity tips:
Help your
child feel
comfortable
for bedtime
Help your child
relax to get
ready for sleep
Establish a
specific bed-
time routine
-Select a bedtime that you feel is appropriate for
your child based on their age and schedule, and
be consistent, even on weekends and during va-
cations
-Establish a predictable, regular sequence of
events to prepare for sleep and relaxation. Begin
this bedtime routine about a half hour before
-Avoid exercise , TV or screen time immediately
before bedtime because these can make chil-
dren more alert
-Reducing clutter can help the child focus on bed-
time. Have your child help pick up and put away
toys
-Play soothing music during bedtime routine to
help your child calm down and signal that bed-
time is arriving
-Dim the lights when getting ready for bed to help
the child prepare for the dark and to reinforce
that nighttime is for sleeping
-Think about sensory experiences: are pjs or blan-
kets itchy? Do the fabrics breathe? Is the room too
warm? Too cool? Are the window coverings letting
in too much light?? Are there smells wafting in
from the kitchen?

Children and youth are
encouraged to live an
active lifestyle with a
daily balance of sleep,
sedentary behaviours,
and physical activities
that supports
their healthy
development.
