COLGATE RAIDERS 4-9 (2-6 PATRIOT)

26 ground balls, followed by Connor Murphy with 24 ... Goalkeeper Brandon Burke is the overall leader with 32 ... Murphy leads in caused turnovers with 11, and Stouros has forced nine opponent miscues.

RAIDERS RUN PAST LAFAYETTE, 14-9Colgate took out 45 days of frustration on Lafayette and Joe Delaney scored five goals in his first collegiate start to spark a 14-9 victory on April 22. The Raiders won for the second time in conference play and the first time overall since defeating Hobart back on March 8. Colgate also scored a season-high 14 goals, reaching double-figures for the first time since February. Colgate’s first half was a thing of beauty on both sides of the ball. The Raiders put a season-high six goals on the board in the opening quarter, jumped in front 9-2 in the second and led 10-4 by the break. Many of those goals followed failed Lafayette clears as Colgate was pressuring from end to end. Head coach Mike Murphy specifically hailed the effort not only of Delaney but also of Robby Dunigan, who scored two goals and caused three turnovers as the Raiders limited Lafayette to just 7-of-17 on clears for the game. Lafayette committed 19 turnovers, with 13 of those caused by the Colgate defense. 23001Delaney’s five goals were a Colgate high for the season. The sophomore upped his career total from four goals to nine, all this season. Tyler Rigo and Sam Cleveland joined Dunigan with two-goal games.

RIGO SCORES TWICE ON SENIOR DAYTyler Rigo scored twice to continue his late-season surge, but Holy Cross put a damper on Senior Day with a 12-6 decision over Colgate on April 16. The Raiders had their best game of the season at the faceoff-X, winning 15 of 21 draws. Collin Orr captured 10 of his 14 chances and Peter Marchetto five of seven. Anthony Abbadessa added two assists for a three-point game.

FIRST CAREER HAT TRICKS FOR STEBBINS, RIGOColgate jumped to an early 2-0 lead but No. 9/10 Navy displayed its first-place credentials in a 16-9 result on April 9.

Jack Stebbins netted his first career hat trick for the Raiders, who had their best scoring output in more than a month. Colgate put nine goals on the board but couldn’t slow down a Navy offense that scored four in each of the four quarters. Tyler Rigo and Anthony Abbadessa tallied two goals apiece for the Raiders. Robby Dunigan made the most of his first career start with a goal just 2½ minutes into the game. The junior added a pair of assists for his first multi-point game. On March 26, Rigo earned his first start of the season and netted his first career hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as Army West Point held on for an 11-7 decision on March 26. Army led 7-2 at the half and 10-2 just past the midway point of the third quarter before Rigo tried to spark a Colgate comeback. The senior midfielder overlapped the third and fourth quarters with a pair of goals and then assisted on Anthony Abbadessa’s tally with 6:32 left.

Chase Wittich added back-to-back goals to narrow the Army lead to 10-7 before Black Knights attackman Cole Johnson capped a seven-point day with his fourth goal. Sam Cleveland scored the other Raider goal with a first-quarter strike on a man advantage.

DONATO, CLEVELANDNET THREE-POINT GAMESSharpshooting Fairfield used a 7-0 first-half run to build a big early lead and then held off Colgate 12-7 on March 19. Six different scorers accounted for Colgate’s seven goals, with rookie Sam Cleveland netting a pair to go with an assist. Peter Donato posted a goal and two assists for a matching three-point game, while Cam Williams had a goal and an assist.

DEFENSE SHINES IN RIVALRY MATCHUPAt the very last breath of another closely contested Central New York rivalry game, Cornell eked out an anguishing 6-5 decision over Colgate on March 15. Anthony Abbadessa scored twice for the Raiders, who rallied from a 5-2 deficit late in the third quarter. Abbadessa had the middle of three Colgate goals that forged a 5-5 tie over the last 8½ minutes. Colgate goalkeeper Brandon Burke posted a season-high 13 saves. Burke

in consecutive games against the Big Red has compiled 29 saves. He had a career-high 16 in last year’s overtime contest.

Burke for the season ranks fourth in the Patriot League in goals-against average at 8.72 and fifth in save percentage at .524. RAIDERS HALT HOBART, 7-6Colgate’s defense clamped down in the closing crucial minutes and the Raiders outlasted Hobart 7-6 on March 8. Six different Raiders accounted for Colgate’s seven goals, with Cam Williams the only one to double up. It marked Williams’ second straight two-goal game.

Sam Cleveland scored a goal with two assists for a team-high three points, while Jack Stebbins contributed a goal and an assist. Brandon Burke made nine saves and allowed just the six goals, only two of which came in the second half. The Raider defense blanked Hobart over the final 20:07.

ABBADESSA PATRIOT LEAGUE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKAnthony Abbadessa found the net four times Feb. 27 to help Colgate outlast Bucknell 11-10 in an overtime thriller. For that effort, the sophomore attacker was named Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week.

Abbadessa scored Colgate’s first three goals as the Raiders rallied from a 5-1 deficit to draw even by halftime. He tied the game again at 6-6 early in the third quarter with his fourth goal of the game and sixth of the season.

CLEVELAND, STEBBINSSCORE TWICE AT BOSTON U.No. 18 Boston University took advantage of first-half perfection in the faceoff-X to defeat Colgate 11-6 in Patriot League action last Saturday. First-year attacker Sam Cleveland contributed four points on two goals and two assists. It was Cleveland’s best performance since he had three goals and three assists in the win over Binghamton. Junior Jack Stebbins also had a two-goal game to match his career high.

Mike Murphy has his Raiders on a roll. The Colgate men’s lacrosse head coach just completed his fourth season and already has posted a pair of Patriot League regular season championships, one postseason title and two trips to the NCAA tournament. In 2015, Colgate tied Navy for regular season honors and then swept to the Patriot League championship on the Midshipmen’s home field. The Raiders knocked off Army 11-8 in the title game. Colgate in four seasons under Murphy has a 41-24 (.631) record that ties for the second-most wins over any four-year period in pro-gram history. The Raiders are 22-13 (.629) against Patriot League competition and twice have finished the season ranked among the nation’s top 15. Named to his first head coaching position on July 20, 2011, Murphy led the 2012 Raid-ers to a Patriot League regular-season title en route to the best campaign in program history. Colgate finished 14-4, including a 6-0 road mark, a 6-2 record against nationally-ranked oponents, and a win over undefeated No. 1 Massachusetts in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The NCAA bid was Colgate’s second post-season appearance and its first as an NCAA at-large recipient. The Raiders also secured their first tournament win and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The 2015 championship season saw the Raiders picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League before the year began but compile a 6-2 record that tied Navy for top honors. Col-gate then swept past Bucknell and Army in the conference tournament for their first automatic berth since 2008. All-Star performers from the team were Matt Clarkson and Ryan Walsh, who both earned USILA All-American honorable men-tion nods in addition to their All-Patriot League First Team and Patriot League All-Tournament Team status. Walsh also was named MVP of the Patriot League tournament. For the sea-son, Clarkson led the Raiders with 30 assists

and 51 points, while Walsh topped the squad with 33 goals to finish his career with 139 goals and 203 points. Those numbers placed second in both categories in the Colgate re-cords book. Murphy joined the Raiders after serving as an assistant coach at Army. In his seven seasons with the Black Knights, Army was consistently ranked among the best defensive teams both in the Patriot League and national-ly under his mentorship, during which he also guided some of the most prolific goalkeepers in Academy history. Murphy joined Army after spending two seasons at Division III Denison in Granville, Ohio, where he was in charge of the Big Red’s defensive unit, goalies and faceoff personnel. He also served as an assistant on Denison’s football coaching staff and held a position in the Department of Athletics, Physical Educa-tion and Recreation as an instructor. Prior to his work at Denison, the Univer-sity of New Hampshire graduate served as head assistant coach/defensive coordina-tor at Wingate from 1999-2001. The Beverly,

Mass., native helped the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Division II National Semifinal appear-ance in school history as the squad posted a 27-17 record in Murphy’s three seasons on its sideline, while 14 players garnered All-Deep South honors. His 2001 defensive unit fin-ished the season among the national leaders in scoring defense (12th), winning percentage (7th) and goals-against average (10th). Murphy also enjoyed one-year stints at Pfei-ffer and Merrimack after his graduation from the University of New Hampshire in the spring of 1996. He was a three-year letterman for the Wildcats. Murphy is a member of the USILA Division I All-American Committee as well as the USILA Division I Poll Committee. He serves as chair of the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Coach-es Committee, and also serves on the IMLCA Division I Coaches Advisory Board. Murphy and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of two children: son, Colin; and daughter, Dylan Emma.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Colgate nearly rallied from a three-goal second-half deficit before falling 9-8 at Michigan. Michigan scored the game’s first three goals and never trailed, although Colgate did cut the lead to one on four dif-ferent occasions. The Wolverines led 4-1 after the first quar-ter and held on from there inside Oosterbaan Field House. Peter Donato and Chase Wittich scored two goals apiece for Colgate in its opening game of the 2016 season. Michigan’s Kyle Jackson was the scoring leader with four goals, while Mikie Schlosser added two. Late Michigan goals in the second and third periods were decisive. Schlosser scored with nine seconds left in the first half to push the Wolverine edge to 7-4 heading to inter-mission. And then Jackson scored with less than a second remaining to cap the third quarter to make it 8-6 heading into the final stanza. Colgate allowed a Michigan man-up goal just past the midway point of the fourth quarter that made it 9-6. The Raiders then rallied behind Donato and Cam Williams tallies. Williams scored with 4:32 remaining, but Colgate wasn’t able to score the tying goal. Eric Foote returned from a season missed by injury to score Colgate’s first goal of 2016. Donato assisted on the man-up tally that pulled the Raiders within 3-1. Jack Stebbins and Wittich went back-to-back early in the second, and rookie Sam Cleveland also scored his first as the teams finished 3-3 for the period.

COLGATE 11Binghamton 4Feb. 20 -- Crown Field, Hamilton

Binghamton 0 3 1 0 -- 4Colgate 3 3 3 2 -- 11

HAMILTON -- Colgate said hello to its 2016 home sched-ule with an 11-4 victory over Binghamton. Four Raiders found the netting for multiple goals, led by first-year attacker Sam Cleveland’s hat trick. Anthony Abbadessa, Eric Foote and Chase Wittich added two goals apiece as Colgate posted a balanced attack throughout. The Raiders scored three goals in each of the first three quarters before coasting home with two in the final 15 min-utes. Colgate’s defense, meanwhile, limited Binghamton to just one second-half goal to help extend a 6-3 halftime ad-vantage. One week after being stung by a pair of late-period goals in a 9-8 setback at Michigan, Colgate scored twice Saturday in the closing seconds of the second and third quarters. Wittich tallied just three seconds before the halftime horn to extend Colgate’s lead to three goals, and then Tyler Rigo found the netting with seven seconds left in the third quarter. That goal highlighted a 5-0 closing finish for the Raiders. Colgate scored three consecutive goals to start the game and five straight to finish. The Bearcats won nine of 11 faceoffs in the first half, but Colgate turned the tables for a 5-3 margin in the second half. Collin Orr handled the second-half duties and finished 7-of-13 for the Raiders. Colgate completed 16 of 17 clears, while Binghamton was 14-of-16. Colgate’s defense not only limited the Bearcats to one second-half goal but also forced 15 turnovers. The Raiders committed 10 after being charged for 16 last week at Michi-gan. And Brandon Burke made nine saves.

HAMILTON -- Midfielder Eric Foote scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Colgate to a thrilling 11-10 victory over No. 20 Bucknell in the Patriot League opener. It marked Colgate’s fifth consecutive win over the Bison. Attacker Anthony Abbadessa scored four times, tying his career-high, while attacker Chase Wittich added two goals of his own. Foote notched another goal in regulation, tal-lying two on the day. Joe Delaney, Duncan Hoskinson and Jack Stebbins each registered goals in the Colgate victory. The Raiders were down by as many as four goals, trail-ing 5-1 early in the second period. Colgate rallied with four unanswered, led by two Abbadessa goals, and knotted the game at 5-5 by halftime. Colgate came out striking in the third period, adding four more goals to grab a 9-8 lead heading into the final period. Wittich scored the Raiders’ lone goal in the fourth quarter to give them a 10-8 advantage with 13:57 left. In the overtime session, the Raiders lost the faceoff on a violation but solid defense by goalie Brandon Burke caused a Bucknell turnover. After a timeout with 2:14 left in OT, Foote scored the game-winner from about 10 yards out.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Chase Wittich scored his second ca-reer a hat trick but Lehigh fought off a second-half Colgate rally to defeat the Raiders 12-9. Colgate grabbed a 2-1 lead on Wittich’s first goal with 3:13 left in the first quarter. But Lehigh scored three times in the last 2:17 of the period to lead 4-2 after 15 minutes. It was 7-3 Mountain Hawks by halftime and 9-4 late in the third quarter until Colgate scored three goals in the final 2:25 to pull within 9-7 heading to the fourth. Lehigh scored midway in the final period to push the lead back to three, but Cam Williams and Sam Cleveland an-swered in a 35-second span to draw the Raiders within 10-9 with still 6:17 remaining. The Raiders had a man-up opportunity but couldn’t take advantage, and Lehigh tacked on a pair of goals in the clos-ing minutes. Williams and Cleveland posted two goals apiece, and Wittich added two assists to his three-goal output for the third five-point game of his young career. Wittich has scored at least two goals in all four Colgate games this season. Wittich scored his three goals on just four shots. Cleve-land scored his first collegiate man-up goal.

COLGATE 7Hobart 6March 8 -- Boswell Field, Geneva, N.Y.

Colgate 3 1 2 1 -- 7Hobart 1 3 2 0 -- 6

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Colgate’s defense clamped down in the closing crucial minutes and the Raiders outlasted Hobart 7-6 on a Tuesday afternoon. It was another bump-and-grind game between these Central New York foes, who have been meeting in lacrosse for nearly a century. Colgate now has won four of the last five against the Statesmen, but they haven’t come easy. This one followed a familiar script: hard-fought, low-scor-ing, down-to-the-wire. Tyler Rigo tied the game with 10 seconds left in the third quarter when he alertly rebounded and put back his own saved shot. Then Cam Williams scored his second goal of the game midway in the fourth, somehow finding a sliver of daylight to get it past Hobart goalkeeper Jackson Brown. But the Raiders hardly were home free. Hobart gained possession with 5½ remaining and poured shot after shot at the Colgate goal. Raiders keeper Brandon Burke finally found one he could handle right at the 1-minute mark. Colgate played keep-away for the final 60 seconds and walked off with a satisfying third victory of the season. Six different Raiders accounted for Colgate’s seven goals, with Williams the only one to double up. Sam Cleveland scored a goal with two assists for a team-high three points, while Jack Stebbins contributed a goal and an assist. Burke made nine saves and allowed just the six goals, only two of which came in the second half. The Raider de-fense blanked Hobart over the final 20:07. Williams scored his second of the game and sixth of the season near the midway point of the final period, and the Raiders held on from there.

Boston University 11COLGATE 6March 12 -- Nickerson Field, Boston

Colgate 1 2 2 1 -- 6Boston U. 3 3 2 3 -- 11

BOSTON -- No. 18 Boston University took advantage of first-half perfection in the faceoff-X to defeat Colgate 11-6 in Patriot League action. The Raiders were limited in quality possessions all after-noon. In the opening 30 minutes, BU claimed all 11 faceoffs to go into the locker room leading 6-3. Boston U. finished the game 18-of-21 on faceoffs. Colgate in the second half committed 12 of its 14 turn-overs to tamper any hopes of a comeback. The Raiders were held to just two total shots in the fourth quarter. First-year Colgate attacker Sam Cleveland contributed four points on two goals and two assists. It was Cleveland’s best statistical performance since he had three goals and three assists in the Feb. 20 win over Binghamton. Junior Jack Stebbins also had a two-goal game Saturday to match his career high. Cam Williams and Anthony Ab-badessa chipped in the other two Raider goals. The Raiders were solid on clears, finishing 19-of-20. BU was 16-of-23. Shots favored the Terriers 34-31. Colgate worked up a 13-5 advantage in the third quarter, but then the Raiders were outshot 11-2 over the final 15 minutes. In addition to Stebbins’ two goals, he also set career highs with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Cleveland is the team leader with eight assists and 17 points. He has nine goals to team leader Wittich’s 10. John Baker (6) and Backe (5) led the Colgate defense with career highs in ground balls.

Cornell 6COLGATE 5March 15 -- Crown Field, Hamilton

Cornell 0 3 2 1 -- 6Colgate 1 0 2 2 -- 5

HAMILTON -- At the very last breath of another closely contested Central New York rivalry game, Cornell eked out an anguishing 6-5 decision over Colgate. Cornell freshman Zach Ward capped a big day with his second goal of the game – and his career – for the winner just as the final horn sounded. The Raider defense, stellar all afternoon, was closely monitoring Big Red senior scoring leader John Edmonds. But while Colgate held Edmonds without a goal, his second assist of the game found Ward at close range and the rookie didn’t miss. The clock struck triple-zeroes just as the ball was finding the net. Anthony Abbadessa also scored twice for the Raiders, who rallied from a 5-2 deficit late in the third quarter. Ab-badessa had the middle of three Colgate goals that forged a 5-5 tie over the last 8½ minutes. But the Raiders never could re-capture the lead and missed by a tenth of a second forcing overtime against Cor-nell for the second year in a row. Tuesday’s meeting was the 50th in this series and the Big Red won for the 11th straight time and 22nd in the last 23. Last year in Ithaca, Cornell fought off a late Raider rally to prevail 10-9 in overtime. Colgate was looking for its first win over Cornell since 1997 and its first home victory since 1964. Both defenses were rock solid. The Raiders forced 14 Cor-nell turnovers, while the Big Red forced 12. Burke posted a season-high 13 saves and Cornell’s Don-ville had 14. Burke in consecutive games against the Big Red has compiled 29 saves. He had a career-high 16 in last year’s overtime contest.

HAMILTON -- Sharpshooting Fairfield used a 7-0 first-half run to build a big early lead and then held off Colgate in a 12-7 decision. The visiting Stags scored eight goals on their first 11 shots and led 8-2 at halftime. Fairfield expanded the mar-gin to 11-4 and 12-5 in the fourth quarter before the Raiders tacked on a couple of closing goals. Colin Burke scored three times and TJ Neubauer twice during Fairfield’s seven-goal run over an 11:51 stretch of the first half. Burke and Neubauer tallied four goals apiece. Six different scorers accounted for Colgate’s seven goals, with rookie Sam Cleveland netting a pair to go with an as-sist. Peter Donato posted a goal and two assists for a match-ing three-point game, while Cam Williams had a goal and an assist. Millstone’s second-quarter assist marked his first colle-giate point in his 40th career game. Collin Orr (6-of-9) and Peter Marchetto (5-of-12) combined to help Colgate post an 11-10 edge in faceoffs. Stebbins with four ground balls and John Baker with two caused turnovers equaled their career highs. HAMILTON -- Tyler Rigo earned his first start of the sea-son and netted his first career hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as Army West Point held on for an 11-7 decision. Army led 7-2 at the half and 10-2 just past the midway point of the third quarter before Rigo tried to spark a Col-gate comeback. Rigo drawing the assignment in midfield was the first al-teration to Colgate’s starting lineup all season. Rigo’s previ-ous goal-scoring high was two on three occasions; his previ-ous point-scoring high also was two. John Baker continued his solid defensive work with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Leo Stouros contribut-ed two ground balls and a caused turnover. Army opened the game with four straight goals and then put together a 5-0 run in the middle portion to lead 10-2 late into the third quarter. Army entered the game ranked 16th and 18th nationally in the major polls. Colgate’s seven turnovers were a season low.

HAMILTON -- The Colgate offense found tough sledding and dropped a 12-4 decision to No. 14/16 Loyola on a cold and snowy afternoon. The Raiders were limited to just one goal in each of the four periods, while Loyola scored five times in the third peri-od to break open a close game. The Greyhounds in the third quarter outshot Colgate 17-1 and turned a 5-2 halftime lead into a 10-3 advantage heading to the fourth. Colgate scored on its only shot attempt of the third quar-ter when Tyler Rigo found the net for his fourth goal in the last two games. Other Raider goals came off the sticks of Sam Cleveland, Cam Williams and Joe Delaney. The lone Colgate assist went to Duncan Hoskinson on the Williams man-up goal early in the second quarter that narrowed Loyola’s lead to 3-2. The teams committed five turnovers apiece in the first quarter, when conditions were the worst. The Raiders forced 15 Loyola miscues and committed only 12. Anthony Abbadessa picked up a career-high five ground balls in the slippery conditions, while John Baker caused a pair of turnovers. In addition to Abbadessa, Rigo picked up three ground balls to just miss his career high. Burke had three, Baker two, Chandler Millstone two (season high), Jackson Patterson two (tied career high) and Kevin Adams two (career high). Brandon Burke turned in 12 saves against the 47-shot Loyola attack.

Colgate put nine goals on the board but couldn’t slow down a Navy offense that scored four goals in each of the four quarters. Tyler Rigo and Anthony Abbadessa tallied two goals apiece for the Raiders. Robby Dunigan made the most of his first career start with a goal just 2½ minutes in, and the junior added a pair of assists for his first multi-point game. After Dunigan’s opener, Duncan Hoskinson scored with 10:53 left in the first to extend Colgate’s early advantage to 2-0. Navy scored four straight to take a 4-2 lead and then earned the break of the game when Rigo’s apparent goal 0.7 seconds before the first-quarter horn was disallowed for a crease violation. The CBS Sports Network replay didn’t back up the call, but the ruling stood.

Holy Cross 3 1 6 2 -- 12Colgate 2 1 2 1 -- 6

HAMILTON -- Tyler Rigo scored twice to continue his late-season surge, but Holy Cross put a damper on Senior Day with a 12-6 decision over Colgate. The Crusaders poured in six goals during the decisive third quarter, turning a 4-3 halftime edge into a 10-5 advan-tage entering the final period. Holy Cross outshot Colgate 17-6 in the third quarter and 30-12 for the second half to help prevent a Raider comeback. Rigo scored both of his goals in the second half, giving the senior captain seven goals in his last four games. The Raiders had their best game of the season at the faceoff-X, winning 15 of 21 draws. Collin Orr captured 10 of his 14 chances and Peter Marchetto five of seven. Other goals for Colgate went to Anthony Abbadessa, Cam Williams, Peter Donato and Joe Delaney. Abbadessa added two assists for a three-point game. Orr upped his faceoff percentage by 34 points to .474 after winning 15 of 21 attempts. The sophomore also set a career high with seven ground balls. Marchetto had four ground balls thanks to his 5-of-7 ef-fort on faceoffs. John Baker, Connor Murphy and Chandler Millstone were credited with caused turnovers, and Jake Danehy made his second appearance of the season in goal, holding the Crusaders scoreless the final 6:42.

COLGATE 14Lafayette 9April 22 -- Fisher Stadium, Easton, Pa.

Colgate 6 4 1 3 -- 14Lafayette 1 3 4 1 -- 9

EASTON, Pa. -- Colgate took out 45 days of frustration on Lafayette and Joe Delaney scored five goals in his first col-legiate start to spark a 14-9 victory. The Raiders won for the second time in conference play and the first time overall since defeating Hobart back on March 8. Colgate also scored a season-high 14 goals, reach-ing double-figures for the first time since February. Colgate’s first half was a thing of beauty on both sides of the ball. The Raiders put a season-high six goals on the board in the opening quarter, jumped in front 9-2 in the sec-ond and led 10-4 by the break. Many of those goals followed failed Lafayette clears as Colgate was pressuring end to end. Head coach Mike Murphy specifically hailed the effort not only of Delaney but also of Robby Dunigan, who scored two goals and caused three turnovers as the Raiders limited Lafayette to just 7-of-17 on clears for the game. Delaney’s five goals were a Colgate high for the season. The sophomore upped his career total from four goals to nine, all this season. Tyler Rigo and Sam Cleveland joined Dunigan with two-goal games.
