MessageFrom the President

while serving as a witness to Christ and the gift of God’stransformative love for all. Through God’s grace, youmake this possible and we can’t thank you enough.

The responsibility of forming leaders for the church andsociety is a truly awesome responsibility and we arehonored to take up this mantle each and every day. Oneconstant reminder of the importance of our task is framedin the display case outside my office. There for all to seeis the admission photograph of a very young MartinLuther King, Jr. along with a letter of inquiry from him anda letter of support from his father. I walk past this displayeach and every day before I enter my office and thereisn’t a time when I am not struck by the impact thattheological education can have on the world. When Ithink of the life and work of Dr. King and the countlessother alumni/ae of our prestigious school, I think of ourlegacy, the importance and goodness of our work, andthe necessity to safeguard this institution during thesechallenging times in the life of the church so that it willcontinue to bear fruit for generations to come. By thegrace of God, our good work forms leaders who, like Dr. King, help to bring the Kingdom a little closer to allpeople, making our world a little more just, a little kinder,a little more compassionate, a little more loving.

My constant prayer for CRCDS, its faculty and its staff, isthat we remain ever mindful of our task and ourresponsibility, that we do our absolute best to serve notonly the students and alumni/ae of this belovedinstitution, but those who provide the financial support tomake our mission a reality. We honor the legacies ofColgate Rochester, The Baptist Missionary TrainingSchool, Crozer Theological and CRCDS by ensuring thefuture of progressive theological education is bright, dynamic and successful. We do not know exactly whatthe future holds, but we do know it will require thoughtful,

Dear Alumni/ae and Friends of ColgateRochester Crozer Divinity School,

It is my privilege to share with you the 2013-2014 Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School(CRCDS) Annual Report. We are grateful for the generous support of all those listed in these pages andwe continue to thank God for each and every one of you.Without your support, the mission of CRCDS would betruly impossible and its vital work of providing educated, progressive, transformative leaders would go largelyundone. Thanks to you and to all those who havesupported CRCDS over the years, CRCDS continues tochange lives, just as it has for almost 200 years, bypreparing leaders who are pastoral in their approach, prophetic in both word and deed and, of course, learned, attaining the knowledge necessary to sustain them in an increasingly complex world. Together, these threecharacteristics are the hallmark of a CRCDS graduate. Our school is a living testament to all that can beaccomplished when people of faith answer God’s calland work together to positively impact our world. Pleaseknow how grateful we are for you, your friendship andyour generosity.

The Annual Report provides an added opportunity tointroduce you to a few of our most treasured resources—our students. Your generosity makes their educationpossible and your support is a direct investment not only in them, but in the future of the church and in theprogressive values all of us at CRCDS hold dear. I encourage you to take the time to read these studentprofiles and rest assured knowing that our future and thefuture of our children and grandchildren are in excellenthands. Your investment is paying real dividends today inthe form of successful leaders who speak truth to power, who advocate for those in need, who transform society

The Rev. Marvin A. McMickle, Ph.D.

educated leaders who are able to bring the Good Newsof the Gospel to all people in a way that embracesdifference, instills hope, and promotes love for all God’speople, while keeping the challenge of justice front andcenter. An investment in CRCDS is an investment in thefuture and in the Good News of Jesus.

Graduate theological education faces many challengestoday, not the least of which is the cost of providingquality education to students regardless of their financialneed. While thanking you for all you do and have donefor CRCDS, I must be bold in asking for your continuedsupport. Please share our good work with others andencourage them to truly make a difference in the worldby supporting CRCDS. I am confident the Lord willcontinue to bless us with friends like you who value thegood and essential work entrusted to us. God willing,CRCDS will continue to thrive for 200 more years andbeyond. That foundation is built today by friends like youand we are so very grateful for your generosity and, ofcourse, your constant prayers.

On behalf of all of us at CRCDS and all those countlesssouls who over the years have been nurtured, challengedand supported by one of our exemplary alumni/ae, I offerour profound thanks. May God continue to bless you inthe days and weeks ahead.

Yours through Christ,

The Rev. Marvin A. McMickle, Ph.D.

Ask Yinka Gardiner todescribe her path to the ministry, and she shakes herhead. “I really don’t understand it myself,” she says.“Several times since 2008, on separate occasions, the Lordrevealed His desire to have me ‘go deeper’ in my walk withHim. I didn’t really process what that meant until one day, I was asked to do altar call. I literally felt the Lord speakingthrough me. What I said and how I prayed was almost anout-of-body experience. There was only one explanation:this could only happen through the grace of God.”

Yinka says she knew then, that the Lord was setting her aside for something. When she finally decided to answer the call to ministry in 2013, events happened “at warp speed.” Her husband decided to return to Cornell University to pursue full time studies, necessitating a move from Silver Spring,MD to Ithaca, NY. Her own future was very uncertain.

A month before leaving for Ithaca, Yinka reluctantly composed a letter of resignation to present to her boss and prepared to leave a job she loved:Finance Director for The Dalit Freedom Network, USA, a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit that works to end injustices for some of the poorest and neglected people in India.

Yinka said that she and her husband knew they “needed to let go and trustGod for His provision. We realized when we allowed ourselves to walk in faith,God literally carved out a path for us.” A spacious, affordable place to live, which once seemed an impossibility, became available. Yinka’s supervisoremphatically declined to accept her two-week notice of resignation andinstead formulated a flexible plan to allow Yinka to work from her home office in Ithaca. With employment in place,Yinka turned her focus toward her goal of theological education. The proximity of Ithaca to Rochester, while notideal, made it possible for Yinka to enroll at CRCDS in the fall of 2013.

Yinka says the most satisfying and gratifying piece of this journey is the encouragement and support she’s receivedfrom the CRCDS community. Worries and concern over her daughter, Sade, accompanying her to classes turned toblessed relief, she says, when faculty warmly encouraged her and classmates offered to watch her daughter whileshe studied.

One of Yinka’s greatest goals is to serve the Lord within her passion for discipleship and missions. She takes greatjoy in believers growing in Christ. For Yinka, missions should not only meet the needs of the world’s marginalized, but should seek reconciliation between the disregarded population and those doing the “overlooking.” To that end,she plans to examine race relations directly through publishing her writings and serving as a public speaker. Sherealizes that this may require her to attain a Ph.D., but she says, “My parents were originally from Nigeria and myhusband’s parents were from Liberia. We both understand and embrace the need to work hard and sacrifice toachieve our goals.”

Yinka’s story truly illustrates the lesson from Philippians 4:19 —“God will provide.” Through your generosity, CRCDSis providing Yinka with the quality theological education necessary to minister in the world today. On behalf of Yinka and all the students of CRCDS, thank you!

On Tuesday, September 11,2001, Sebrone Johnsonstayed home from work. That decision, by chance or design, forever changed his life—his office was located at 1 Liberty Plaza, directly acrossthe street from the World Trade Center.

At the time, Sebrone was immersed in a fast-paced careerthat left little opportunity for rest or reflection. Looking backnow, he sees the events of September 11th as a kairoticmoment that opened his heart, allowing him to hear God’surging in a definitive way. “I realized,” Sebrone says, “butfor God’s grace, most of the work I was truly called to domight go undone.”

After a period of reflection and discernment, Sebrone madethe decision to attend Colgate Rochester Crozer DivinitySchool, which he says has been one of the best experiences of his life. He currently carries a full course load, whileworking full time, pastoring a church and caring for his family. Despite these responsibilities and demands, Sebrone isalways smiling. When asked how he finds the strength to be happy, Sebrone says it is the “rock solid conviction that God is always there” no matter what the day holds.

Successfully juggling multiple roles is a well-honed skill Sebrone learned from his late father, Rev. Johnny F. Atkins, whopassed away January 15, 2015, on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthdate. Sebrone considers both men his heroesfor their unflagging energy, drive and deep commitment to church, family and community. In addition, Sebrone admiresDr. King’s “ability to see scripture in a more panoramic way.”

Asked whether doubt or uncertainty have ever impeded his journey, Sebrone saysthere have been plenty of obstacles in his life: the death of one of his dearestfriends, birth issues with both of his sons, nearly losing his wife in a car accident, and juggling several careers at once. He acknowledges that while thesechallenges have been significant, “Ultimately, life is based on this fact: God’spresence may lay in quiet whispers or trickling tears. But He is always there. Andthat is sufficient.”

Sebrone attended Union College in Schenectady, NY as well as St. John FisherCollege in Rochester, NY where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree inApplied Mathematics and was honored as an All-American Scholar. He currentlyserves as the Divisional Director of Technology and Program Operations at theUrban League of Rochester, NY and serves on the boards of E3 Rochester andthe Vertus Charter School.

Although his educational, spiritual and professional credentials are noteworthy,Sebrone considers his family to be his greatest asset. He refers to his wife, Donnaand his two sons, Bryan (25) and Darius (12) as the loves of his life.

Sebrone is proud to pastor The Greater Harvest Church in Rochester, NY, and while his congregation excites andmotivates him, it disturbs him to see people regularly separated from God by “self-imposed sanctions based on pastfailings.” He says there is no sadder sight than, “watching people go about life, feeling they are beyond the reach ofGod’s love and redemption.”

The solution to this problem, for Sebrone, lies in a quotation by Norman B. Rice: “Dare to reach out your hand into thedarkness, to pull another into the light.” CRCDS is equipping Sebrone to extend his reach to ease the burden of thosehe serves. The generosity of all those who support CRCDS makes Sebrone’s ministry possible.

Gifts, it is said, come in many forms. In the fall of 2006, AlekaSchmidt, a 28 year old married mother of a two year–olddaughter, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following rig-orous treatment to save her life and eighteen hard monthslater, she says she was blessed with the gifts of feeling closerto God and a much deeper understanding of herself. “Cancer doesn’t change you,” she says. “It’s a refiner’s fire. It stripsaway all the distractions in life, forces you to go inward, and allows you to be who you really are.”

Through her experience with cancer, Aleka discovered who she really was: a strong, talented, giving woman who wantedto go deeper into her experience with the church and respond to God’s call to seminary. Aleka describes her decision toenroll in seminary as the culmination of many years of “God’s nudges” finally getting her attention. Church life and lead-ership were always an important part of her life; she served as the youngest deacon in her church, sat on church boardsand directed music, but had not considered something “more formal.” God’s “nudges” turned into “pushes” in the formof three friends who had completed degrees at CRCDS. Their encouragement led Aleka to apply.

Growing up as the youngest child on her family farm in Kendall, NY,Aleka was often “put on a pedestal” and somewhat shielded from theharsher realities of life. After her diagnosis, she marshalled the disci-pline she had developed as a classically trained musician to help gether through treatments and help her be present for her daughter andhusband. Music also played an enormous part in her healing, andthrough her work as a music therapist, she now shares her giftshelping others heal.

“My experience at CRCDS is completely different from what I thought it would be,” Aleka says. “I enrolled in classes thatwould meet degree and denominational requirements that suited my busy schedule. I figured I could take a few classeshere and there without getting ‘too involved’ in the community. I jumped right in with my first classes, Hebrew and Level IITheology. Yikes! What was I thinking?”

Each time she arrived on campus in those early days, she sat in All-School worship, nearly in tears, praying, “Lord, I’mhere today, but there’s not much more I can offer you right now.” She says the answer to this prayer was always, “You’redoing all I have asked. Just keep at it.”

Aleka has done that and much more. Despite a 62 mile one–way commute to campus, she has truly been “present,”forming friendships, building lasting relationships and participating in Supervised Ministry. She led All-Student Worship forthe past two years and has recently been hired as preacher by First Baptist Church in Albion, NY.

Aleka enjoys using music to minister to those she serves, including the elderly and the dying. She has found many rewardsin working with the Hospice of Orleans County, Lakeside Nursing Home, and the ARC of Orleans County, helping chil-dren with disabilities. She says music can access several parts of the brain simultaneously and, in so doing, “speaks toeveryone’s soul.”

Aleka is grateful for the generosity of the many friends and alumni/ae of CRCDS. Through their support, Aleka is able toanswer God’s call in a new way. She is grateful for the opportunity to serve as a role model for others who have seen theirfaith tested and she is living proof of the ability of faith to make one stronger. CRCDS has played a central role in herdevelopment as an effective and compassionate servant of God. We are grateful for all those who have made Aleka’seducation possible.

Financial Report 2013/2014

Page 14: Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School 2013/2014 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Colgate RochesterCrozer Divinity School (CRCDS), I bring you greetingsfrom the Hill. I am grateful for the opportunity andprivilege to thank each and every one of you who made a financial contribution to the school during the2013–2014 fiscal year. The Trustees of CRCDS aremindful of just how many people it takes to provide theCRCDS education and we are acutely aware of theresources necessary to be sure that CRCDS continues tothrive in the years to come. Every gift of support to theschool is stewarded as a precious investment inprogressive theological education of the highest order. The Trustees are extremely grateful for the many ways youprovide for the school, from your prayers and studentreferrals to your support of financial aid, scholarship, general operations and our beautiful campus. Oursupporters are people like you—loyal and dedicated tomaking sure the mission of CRCDS is carried outeffectively and efficiently. You believe in leaders who trulymake a difference in our world. CRCDS makes thoseleaders possible. On behalf of all the Trustees, I offer mysincere gratitude for your steadfast and prayerful supportthat sustains and energizes our beloved CRCDS.

CRCDS is in the process of charting a new course for thefuture. The church, as you well know, is facingtremendous challenges, from declining Sundayattendance and membership to the high cost ofmaintaining aging buildings. CRCDS is, of course, notimmune from these challenges since we are connected tothe health of the local congregation in a very real way.

Fewer church-goers means fewer people interested inministry, at least ministry as most of us have come toexperience it. Fewer registered members often results inthe closure of churches which subsequently results infewer places for CRCDS graduates and others to work. This can, unfortunately, result in a downward spiral fromwhich it is difficult to recover.

I offer these examples not as cause for pessimism orhopelessness, but rather as a means of reassuring youthat we, the Trustees, understand the issues before usand, more importantly, that we are charting a course forthe school that addresses these challenges head on sothat we may continue to provide quality, progressiveleaders so essential for our communities. The wayspeople understand “spirituality” and “religion” are clearlychanging. Despite this sizable cultural shift, human needsremain constant as does the necessity for leaders who areable to address those needs in responsible ways that bearwitness to the genuine presence of Christ in our midst. Ina very real way, the need for CRCDS, its voice and itsgraduates has never been greater. How we delivereducation—and to whom—is broadening as are theoverall offerings of the school. Our hope is to bring theCRCDS education and experience to an ever-wideninggroup of people and communities who might otherwisenot be exposed to progressive theological inquiry andcritical thinking.

We are eager to share the results of our strategicplanning with you and will do so when it is completedlater this year. Our plan provides a clear, exciting visionfor CRCDS full of opportunity and hope, whilestrategically addressing the realities of our age. This, inmany ways, is exactly what CRCDS and all of the schoolsthat share our legacy, have always done. We provideprogressive theological education while adapting
