Prefacebanks and insurance companies are responsible for 9% of the economic output and 6% of employment in switzerland. regardless of the various international businesses in which they are involved, they all operate out of the Swiss financial centre. The NZZ Swiss International Finance Forum – the first-class confe-rence for the leading representatives of the industry
and the financial centre – wants to address the concerns of this financial centre as a whole and raise questions that are worrying the Swiss financial sector in international compe-tition.
One decade after the outbreak of the global economic and financial crisis, there is still a great deal in flux. The central
banks are curtailing their unconventional measures, regulatory projects are being finalised, corporate cultures are changing, and big data and fintech are modifying processes and business models. What shape will this new balance ultimately take? What is needed to ensure the Swiss financial centre continues to thrive in these new circumstances and remains among the top international echelon? What does sustainability or ”sustainable finance” mean in this context?
With the theme "towards a new balance –Collaboration, Courage, trust", leading representatives and experts will discuss this topic at the NZZ Swiss international Finance Forum (siFF) in 2018. in addition, experienced players from Asia, the Brexit-reviewing UK, and the US will share their expert assessments with conference attendees. at the beginning of the afternoon, we will be offering five different sessions in parallel to expand on individual topics – so the hardest part will most likely be choosing one of them. in any event, i look forward to seeing you in Zurich at nZZ siFF 2018.
Dr Peter a. FischerEconomics Editor-in-Chief, NZZ

At Swiss Re, it’s our business to enable risk-taking with a long-term perspective. Why? Because that’s how progress happens. That’s how societies can become more resilient. Especially when it comes to infrastructure. Together with our clients, we can open our minds to the risks facing both today’s communities and future generations. The creation of infrastructure as a tradeable asset class would unlock long-term investors’ assets, helping to bridge the large infrastructure funding gap. This can stimulate economic growth, strengthen competitiveness and help job creation. In turn, everyone benefi ts, not just today but also in the future. We’re smarter together.

Opportunities and risks in the use of artificial intelligence, including consideration of regulatory requirements
The development of new technologies continues to gather speed. Artificial intelligence is likely
to have a significant impact on the financial industry as a key technology over the next few years,
alongside blockchain. Almost all big banks are experimenting with and developing new solutions
that apply various approaches to machine learning. But is there sufficient appreciation of the risks
associated with this technology?
In this parallel session, we want to offer a brief introduction to artificial intelligence and its use in
the financial services industry of today and tomorrow. In a workshop format, we will also address
how algorithms can be explained and use a case study to establish the risks connected with self-le-
arning machines and how these can be minimised.

Asset management is of great benefit to society. Asset managers have an important responsi-
bility in exercising their voting rights (investment stewardship) and in investing the capital entrusted
to them in ecologically and socially sustainable companies that meet the highest standards of cor-
porate governance (ESG). Furthermore, asset management plays a central role in the financing
of old-age provision.
How do asset managers take this responsibility seriously and how can the industry as
a whole drive change forward even more?

eSGWhat is needed for successful implementation in Switzerland?
Interest in sustainable investment is rising steadily. Millennials in particular give significantly greater
weight to esg (environmental, social and governance) factors in their investment decisions. in the
afternoon workshop, we will look in detail at specific areas of action in building the Swiss financial
centre’s esg positioning and ask ourselves the following questions:
• How can financial service providers and the Swiss government (FDF, SIF) work together to make switzerland a leading hub for sustainable investing?
• Where is there a specific need for action, for example in standardising definitions and me-thods for transparent, comparable reporting?
• How do we achieve globally standardised, comparable indicators?
• How do we arrive at a best practice framework that helps to expand the supply of ESG investment products to meet the growing demand?
• What contribution could ESG/green bond labels or certifications make?
