Production history

The Cape Melville & Flinders Island Archive Collection was donated to AIATSIS under the Cultural Gifts Program on 26 June 2002 by Lew Griffiths and Noel Pearson. It consists of the film rushes and documentation for Griffiths’ 1996 AFI award-winning documentary film Dhuway: an Australian diaspora and homecoming, as well as the master tape of the completed film, which was published by OZIRIS Productions and distributed by SBS Independent. Dhuway was produced by both Lew Griffiths and Noel Pearson, and was directed and edited by Griffiths. Pearson was also the film’s presenter and story editor, having played a major role in the film’s events.

GRIFFITHS_PEARSON_001 Page 3 of 15

The film tells the story of the forced dispersal of the Yiidhuwarra people from their homelands in the Cape Melville area and their struggle to return. It follows tribunal proceedings during their 1993 claim for land rights over their traditional homelands after the passing of the Queensland Land Act, with emotional and heartbreaking hearings as three generations of loss, abuse and exploitation are recounted. Their legal argument is presented by Pearson, a lawyer, with assistance from anthropologist Dr Peter Sutton.

The rushes include both historical archival footage and oral history interviews with the Yiidhuwarra people, as well as site visits, dramatized re-enactments, and a full record of the hearings before the Queensland Land Tribunal at which the claimants testified about their history and the land. Griffiths and Pearson have also provided extensive documentation to complement these rushes, including the final documentary script, production notes, interview and courtroom transcripts, land claim reports and submissions, and archival photographs. This material has a high research and display value; it is an excellent example of the documentation of an Aboriginal land claim and is unique in its coverage and scope.
