From our Principal, John Maguire Kia ora tatou ngā whānau,

Three weeks ago, I was pleased to send to all parents and caregivers my letter of welcome and expectation for the term ahead. In this letter, I emphasised the need for a true learning partnership between whānau, students and teachers; partnerships that promote student engagement, enhanced learning, active participation and commitment to living the Garin values. As I go about my day, welcoming guests into the college, visiting classes, engaging with students, leading assembly, or simply joining a house singing practice, I recognise the positivity of our students and the ever present wairua evident within Garin. Three weeks in and students are well settled into learning and are actively participating in the cultural and sporting life of the college. I wish to acknowledge the significant improvement in student uniform presentation and timeliness of their arrival at school. I say thank you to all parents and caregivers for the nurture and care you provide your students, this support enables each student to attain high standards in all aspects of their schooling. We continue to positively promote high standards and expectations with students. We value the established partnership between students, whānau and staff that enables us to achieve this. Momentum continues to build toward our strategic vision of embedded strength-based wellbeing practiced and lived daily within our college community. This is a wonderful time of growth for our staff and students as we engage in actively recognising the strengths we see in each other; students and staff alike. Strengths like; humour, love, compassion, creativity, honesty, leadership, spirituality... When we are able to articulate and make known the strengths we recognise in ourselves and in others, we build trust and respect amongst each other, we build relationships that promote acceptance and inclusion, we are valued, thereby enhancing each other's overall well-being. I most recently enjoyed the learnings I gained from this simple, yet quite complex and thought provoking quotation;

“The strengths based approach seeks to acknowledge what students can do without ignoring what they cannot do. A decision to focus on a student's strengths is not to deny areas of struggle,

but balances attention given to what is most at risk, with attention given to what has most potential.” Dr Rod Galloway - NZ Principal.

As we progress on through the year, we look forward to engaging students, parents and caregivers in further updates and consultation for enhanced strengths-based wellbeing in Garin. Next week we celebrate our Garin Day Mass and the Feast Day of The Assumption of Mary, mother of Jesus. Our Garin Day Mass also provides opportunity as a community to prayerfully give thanks to God for Fr Antoine Marie Garin, for his life of service and for the learning and inspiration we take from his example. Mass will be held Friday 14 August, 11.45am in the School Gymnasium. We welcome all Garin whānau and our wider parish community to celebrate Mass with us and we look forward to welcoming all guests to share in light refreshments in the staffroom following the Mass. Enrolments for 2021 close on the 21 August. If you have family or friends considering secondary schooling for their children, please encourage them to visit the college or contact our school office for an application pack. Important Information

Student Course Selection for 2021 Years 9 - 12

Students now have access to online course selection for 2021. During this week students in years 10 - 12 have been shown how to select their courses for next year in an assembly and had the chance to join a drop-in session with Brenda Helliwell the Careers Advisor. Year 9 will have an assembly on Monday morning on how to choose their language for next year. As a parent/caregiver you have a vital role to play in helping your child(ren) make informed decisions that keep their possible career pathways open while also keeping them engaged and interested in their learning.

There is an opportunity to discuss possible subjects/Courses with Heads of Faculty (HoF), Teachers in Charge (TiC), Deans and our Careers Advisor Brenda Helliwell on

Monday 10th August from 4.30 to 5.30pm in the Garin School Library.

Subject Selection will initially close on Monday 17 August at 9.00 am. Selection and application for courses will again take place online, accessed through the KAMAR Portal. The Course Selection component of the KAMAR portal shows you how to select subjects as well as gives you subject descriptions and related information about each course by using the menu on the left hand side under Useful Information and Courses. I hope you enjoy this opportunity to sit down with your child(ren) to help shape and plan their future pathway. Paul Bucknall, Timetabler

NetSafe Parent Safety Toolkit

Navigating how to manage teenagers and the digital world is a challenge but there are some key messages from Netsafe. They have developed a Safety Parent Toolkit, click here for the link.

There are some key messages…

Keep open communication with your son/ daughter about

their online lives. Have regular conversations. If you do, they

will be more likely to come to you if there is an issue or be equipped to know how to manage

lower level issues when they arise.

Role model good digital practice.

Have a family online treaty.

Teaching & Learning @ Garin College Ready to Learn @ Garin College

This term we are working in partnership with Garin learners to focus on being ready to learn. We are looking at how your son/daughter can be active participants in their learning. Not simply sitting there being passive and a bystander - school is something done to them. Ready to learn is about shifting the ownership of learning from teachers to Garin learners, enabling students to have the understanding, ability, and opportunity to be part of the learning design and to take action to intervene in the learning process, to affect outcomes and become powerful lifelong learners. The attributes & behaviour's we are setting in our classes are:

Be on time to class

Bring a charged device and charger

Bring a writing utensil and paper

One device at a time

Ask first before using phones

Engage in your learning

Wear the correct uniform

Garin College Practice Exams

Garin College practice exams have been moved to Monday 12th October - Friday 16th October

in Week One of Term Four.

Changes to NCEA for 2020 NZQA will implement three key changes for 2020:

(1) Students working towards an NCEA can gain additional credits, based on the number of credits they achieve during the 2020 school year. For every 5 credits a student achieves towards their NCEA through internal or external assessment, they can be awarded an additional 1 credit. Students at NCEA Level 1 are eligible for up to a maximum of 10 additional credits while those at Levels 2 and 3 are eligible for up to a maximum of 8 additional credits. These will be known as Learning Recognition (LR) credits.

(2) Students will be awarded a certificate endorsement if they achieve 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, rather than the usual 50. Students achieving 12 credits at Merit or Excellence level in a course – rather than 14 – will be awarded a course endorsement. (3) Current UE requirements have been reduced to 12 credits in three UE-approved subjects, from 14 credits in three approved subjects. Students still need to attain NCEA Level 3 and meet the literacy and numeracy requirement to be awarded University Entrance. This Sunday is the 13th Sunday in Ord

“Faith Facts" week 3- Term 3

This Sunday is the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time: “Walking on water.

1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a, Psalm 85, Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus often taught his friends about faith, and the amazing things that could happen when it was strong. Today, we hear about a time when Peter discovered that even he could walk on water if he kept looking to Jesus. What happened that made Peter begin to sink? What did he do when this happened? Peter often let Jesus down because his faith was weak, but Jesus always reached out to save him, just as he does with us when we call out to him.

Snippets from Year 11 assignments: Catholic Ethical Principles as they apply to the issue of Racism. The Catholic Church demonstrates its commitment to its Ethical Principles through catholic social teaching, education, catholic agencies and catholic social services. A bible scripture to support this is John 13:34 ‘A new command I give you, love one another’. This states that Jesus told us to love one another just like he loved us. This is seen in society today when white people who have white privilege speak up and share their voice to stop racism. Just like how Jesus died on the cross for us. Catholic teaching supports this: “Racism is a sin; a sin that divides the human family and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father”.

Confirmation - the next step on your faith journey Last Sunday, 2nd August, preparation began at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Richmond for the Sacrament of Confirmation. 30 young people and their families, including a number of Garin students, will be participating in the programme over the coming weeks.

Please keep them in your prayers.

DRAMA

Last week level one and two drama presented 'Wheeler's Luck', a romp through provincial NZ town, exposing and reinforcing the stereotypes, performed at The Playhouse. We had it all, the small town girl hankering after the big city, life, like Hamilton, the townie with an attitude that just doesn't fit, the crazy ostrich farmer with a penchant for dynamite, the horse that constantly stole the show without saying anything - and so many more, The students performed with flair, garnering the audience's attention throughout. A fun time was had by all.

From The Music Department

Workshop with Trudi Wilson

Senior Music students enjoyed a workshop on Monday 27th July, led by local musician Trudi Wilson. Trudi talked about life as a professional performer in New Zealand and also on cruise ships, putting on solo shows for weeks at a time. She shared tips on polished performances and coping with nerves. Trudi also composes, and shared ideas on song writing. We are looking forward to working more with her in the future. Congratulations to Theo Parker and Millie Pumphrey for their success in the Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand Song Writing Competition’ ‘Sing Out 4 Justice’. They were selected as senior finalists, a great honour in a national competition. The judges wrote, “Congratulations on the composition and performance of your song.”
