The class will begin with a brief kitchen orientation, class utensil overview, and hand washing/sanitation. Students will be able to practice their skills or develop new ones in this fun course. Students will learn proper use of kitchen tools and utensils, butter knife cutting to rolling balls of dough to make bread. Students taking this course will learn how to prepare food for themselves as beginner cooks. This helps build confidence and excellent cooking foundation. Each class includes cooking skills, food- environmental and nutrition science lessons. Students will learn safe use and handling of knives, fire, hot pans, food safety, and sanitation. This class covers: 1) Training the sense of taste and how to make things taste good. The Five Tastes Lunch. 2) The mystery and science of yeast and bread. Fresh baked rolls, yogurt parfaits. 3) Unraveling the mystery of milk: butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, and whipped cream. Cheesey mashed potatoes, ricotta cheese spread, crackers, whipped cream dip with fruit 4) Bringing it all together into the science of pizza. Individual pizzas. Students will learn how famous artists in history created their compositions using the golden proportion, fibonacci sequences and geometry. Students will draw with the instructor and by themselves using the knowledge and examples that they are given. This College Bound course will help students be better prepared for the written portion of their college applications. It will also help prepare students for required writing courses, which in turn will help with all college courses.

This course will focus on the types of essay writing that are required in college. Emphasis will be placed on proper formatting; students will be exposed to MLA and APA formatting guidelines, and will receive practice with MLA.
