involvement in the local parish Mass last Sunday. These students also participated enthusiastically and were a credit to the school and to their families.

The Opening School Mass will be celebrated at the Alice Springs Convention Centre on Friday, 18th March, commencing at 9.30am. Bishop Eugene Hurly will be the chief celebrant for this important College gathering. You are most welcome to join the College community for the Mass.

You are reminded that the College photographs will be taken during Week Eight, on the 14th March (Bath Street), 15th March (Traeger) and the 16th March (Sadadeen). Best wishes

Br Paul Gilchrist Principal

Give up harsh words: use generous ones. Give up unhappiness: take up gratitude. Give up anger: take up gentleness and patience. Give up pessimism: take up hope and optimism. Give up worrying: take up trust in God. Give up complaining: value what you have. Give up stress: take up prayer. Give up judging others: discover Jesus within them. Give up sorrow and bitterness: fill your heart with joy. Give up selfishness: take up compassion for others. Give up being unforgiving: learn reconciliation. Give up words: fill yourself with silence, and listen to others.

Campus News: Bath St Once again we have had a wet and humid week

not always

the best weather for playing outside and drying clothes. The campus is holding up well, just a few puddles and wet grass.

ASH WEDNESDAY Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, and the Bath Street Campus continues to support the work of Caritas through this season as we move towards Easter. The focus will be to reflect on what we have and what we can give to others less fortunate. Keep an eye on the newsletter for ways in which you can support this needy cause. Each class has a Project Compassion collection box, and we hope to be able to make a sizable donation next term.

COLOUR FOR A CURE Tomorrow the SRC are holding a fundraising activity in support of the Leukemia Foundation. Children who return a signed permission slip and bring a gold coin donation can have their hair coloured using non-permanent hairspray in support of this fundraising initiative. We thank the SRC for coordinating this event. The hair spraying will take place from 9.30am onwards. If you have an hour to spare and can give us some help, we would be very grateful.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS Photo envelopes were sent home on Tuesday for the school photographs which will take place at the Bath Street Campus on Monday 14th March. Please ensure that the students are dressed in the full summer uniform (not sports uniform).

All students are asked to return the envelope, whether or not the family is purchasing the photo package.

Family photographs will take place in the Bath Street Hall commencing at 7.45am. Campus News: Sadadeen CAMPUS ACADEMIC DETENTION POLICY This term the campus has re-introduced the Academic Detention Policy. Basically it states that if a student fails to submit an assessment task on time, an academic detention will be issued

Fridays from 3 til 4:00pm. A letter will be sent home with the details of the overdue work and the

Page 4: College Newsletter

4

time/date of the detention. At the end of the detention the staff member supervising will collect the work owing

finished or unfinished

and the student s teacher will

grade/mark it as it is. If a student submits the overdue work before the detention, the detention will still stand. Year 11 & Year 12 students need to realise that handing in in-complete work at the end of the detention will mean that, work is marked as it stands. The SACE Board and the Dept of Education will support our policy in this matter. Please take this into account.

CASUAL CLOTHES DAY The next Casual Clothes Day is Friday 25th March. Parents, please ensure you son/daughter is dressed appropriately.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL Well done to all students who competed and to the staff, especially Mr Peter Augustin on the fine event held last week at the pool. Congratulations to Standley House for winning the carnival and to Achoa House for winning the House Spirit award. Well done to the various age champions. More details follow.

STUDENT PARKING For the time-being, until further notice those students who drive to school are asked to park inside the gates as their parking area is being filled with dirt/gravel. This should take a couple of weeks. Those students who drive also need to see Mrs Gaces (Year 11/12 Coordinator) for their Driving/Parking permit.

Have a good week ahead. Matt de Jong. Head of Campus

Sadadeen.

2011 SADADEEN SWIMMING CARNIVAL Last Friday the 2011 OLSH Sadadeen swimming carnival was held. After a bleak weather forecast and a small drizzle as the day began it was decided that the carnival would go ahead. To our luck the weather held off and by the days end we were even lucky enough to even get a bit of sun.

The students were eager to get in the pool and prove themselves and they certainly did that. Not only did they impress in the water but also in the race for team spirit as they wowed the judges with their costumes, house chants and Nutbush skills. However in the end it was Achoa house that came up trumps winning the 2011 House Spirit Award. Even though they may have had less students on the day they definitely made up for it in determination and enthusiasm.

In the battle for swimming champions for 2011 it was Bennett and Standley that seemed to stand above the rest. In the end it was Standley house that finished the day on top taking out their second consecutive swimming carnival championship.

Congratulations go to the following students for being respective year level champions and students that placed 2nd

and 3rd:

Year 9 Girls Champion: Brooke Schembri 2nd: Ellen Schembri 3rd: Charlott Bowman

Year 9 Boys Champion: Adam Hynes 2nd: Michael Lindsay 3rd: Matthew Delahaye
