Makerere University on May 15, 2012 signed a three year Memorandum of Understanding with Total E&P Uganda to collaborate in the area of promoting education and development. Makerere as an academic institution has technical

is engaged in the exploration and development of petroleum resources in Uganda.

The collaboration will see students

programs for four graduates from Civil and Electrical Engineering at the French Institute of petroleum, starting September 2012. Two university students will also participate in discussions and forums on energy business issues at the Total Summer Scholl in Paris. There will also be education and energy seminars for university professors specializing in sciences related to energy business or economics.

At the same function, Makerere also signed an MoU with Total Professeurs Associes (TPA), a

courses covering all aspects of the oil industry. TPA aims at building bridges between the oil industry, major universities and governmental institutions.

The General Manager of Total E & P Uganda, Loic Laurandel described the ceremony as a milestone in the realization of better education for students in

“We hope these MoUs will pave way for young people from all backgrounds to study and apply

their talents in the oil industry. At Total, we believe in the importance of creating partnerships with the education institutions in our host country as a key to development of local talent and their integration into our business. The MoU will assist in the planning ahead of the industries human resources requirements and cement our partner network activities,’’ he said.

The University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba said, “we are happy you have

chosen to partner with Makerere especially in the area of capacity building. Makerere has been calling for partnerships with the private sector and it is good that Total Uganda has heeded this call, at a time when government is also looking at strengthening science course units.’’ He called upon other private companies to partner with Makerere University in the respective disciplines.

The iLabs@MAK Project, one of the innovative Projects in the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, has been awarded as the best exhibitor, at the 2nd Annual ACIA awards. The day- long event, which took place at Serena Hotel, Kampala, attracted over 50 major players in Uganda’s communications sector.

The Project exhibited a model for an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) robot, a device that aids

by detecting and possibly disarming explosives. The Project was motivated by the need to demonstrate local capacity in the

after the deadly July 9, 2010 terrorist attacks in Kampala. More importantly, the robot is one of the products from a crop of young people, emanating from the Project’s initiative to promote

science and technology innovation in secondary schools:The EOD robot minimizes the risk

in counter-terrorism since it can be sent out on reconnaissance missions and performs tasks that would otherwise expose humans to danger. It is made in such a way as to imitate the human senses of sight, touch, and locomotion, portrayed by an internet connectable camera, a robotic arm and wheels respectively. The mechanical structure of the robot comprises of mainly aluminum pieces, while motion is achieved with the help of two d.c motors for the wheels and 8 servo motors for movement of the arm and rotation of the camera. The robot utilizes a Lego NXT brick for storing and processing instructions.

Communication between the robot and the control computer

is achieved through wireless communication: Bluetooth is used to send commands from the PC to the NXT brick whereas WiFi/WiMax is used to connect the control computer to the camera so that there is a live video stream depicting the robot movements. The use of an internet based camera makes it possible to view the video feed from various locations so that experts who are possibly not on site can advise on the course of action.

This year’s World Earth Day celebrations in Kampala marked the launch of the “Solar Lamps for Health and Wealth” campaign of CREEC in partnership with GIZ’s Energy Explorerz on Sunday April 22nd. Earth Day is a day when nations come together to appreciate the earth by promoting various ways of protecting the earth from harmful activities. It is currently recognized and celebrated in over 175 countries worldwide.

With celebrations organized under the theme, “Renewable Energy for all”, CREEC and GIZ’s Energy Explorerz promoted energy saving

factors at the forefront. CREEC promoted the use of solar lamps in an interactive exhibition from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. The team also promoted the use of the MWOTO stove, a CREEC innovation that is not only economical but also less polluting and can use agricultural by-products (such as maize cobs, briquettes) as alternative fuels.

A colourful concert headlined by Navio climaxed the event with live performances that included presentations like

entertainment groups. Navio, the Best East African Artist according to the 3rd African Entertainment Awards also released his music video of “Your Chance”, his

latest single featuring Jakie that promotes environmental and energy awareness messages. Other singers who featured include local stars Jackie Chandiru, Lilian, Richy, Tshila and the Sun downers band.

The event was graced by many people ranging from students to environmentalists, government

of GIZ and CREEC. This event was organized by GIZ Energy Explorerz with support from the “Solar Lamps for Health and Wealth”, a campaign implemented by CREEC under the Presidential Initiatives Program of CEDAT, Makerere University.

CREEC has participated in a cou-ple of events at regional levels and on the international platform geared at promoting renewable energy.

Workshop on February 28-29, 2012 in The Hague, Netherlands. The aim of the workshop was to develop globally recognized

cookstoves. Participants ranged from stakeholder categories, including stove manufacturers, implementers, researchers, academics, stove testers, and other cookstove community members.

Jackson Mutegeki, a second year student of Environmental Science at Makerere University

and a lab technician at the centre represented CREEC at the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA)-Discover stove camp at Malawi from 20th to 23rd March. As a team leader and member of PCIA, Jackson trained participating students in stove testing procedures like water boiling tests, controlled cooking tests among others. Participants in the camp were majorly people from Malawi government agencies.

CREEC’S management advisor, Wim Getkate participated in the GACC East African stakeholder consultation and strategic planning workshop in Nairobi Kenya from April 23-25th this year.
