History of Psychiatric Pharmacy

• Psychiatric pharmacy started in the early 1970s with Thorazine®, Elavil®, Parnate®.

• PharmD was established, and pharmacists carved out a role in mental health.

• BCPP was recognized in 1992.• Neurologic pharmacists also become BCPPs.• CPNP promotes and supports the profession

with various educational and informational resources.

Career DevelopmentCareer Paths to Becoming a Neuropsychiatric Pharmacist:

• Student → Residency → Fellowship → Academia/Research/Industry

• Student → Pharmacy Practice Residency → Specialty Residency → Practice

Residencies:• Approximately 25 positions available • Multiple areas for sub-specialization

Fellowships:• Approximately 6-10 positions available• Multiple areas for basic, translational, & clinical research

Career Development• Start your training/exposure to neuro/psych while still in

pharmacy school.• Take didactic and experiential electives in neuro/psych. (if your

school doesn’t have them, find where you can get them over the summers or during clinical rotations)

• Identification of education & training opportunities in psychiatric or neurologic pharmacy practice

• Networking with other students & practitioners in neuro/psych.• Get the inside track on post-graduate training.• Identify a mentor/guide in neuro/psych.

Student/Trainee Members• Individuals enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy

progressing toward a PharmD and individuals participating in a post-doctoral educational experience who have an interest in psychiatric or neurologic pharmacy.

• Membership must be renewed annually and status verified by school or employer.

• Student members can serve as committee members but can not vote or serve in elected positions for CPNP.

• CPNP National student dues are $20 per year• Ask about joining or starting a student chapter at your

school!
