Congratulations to the 2019 – 2020 CGA Educational Foundation College Scholarship recipients. This year, 384 scholarships totaling $728,200 were awarded to deserving students attending college this fall.

Beginning with a single $2,000 scholarship, the Foundation has grown exponentially over the last 27 years to bestow more than 4,700 worthy college students with awards totaling $6.57 million – ensuring that California’s grocery employees and their dependents have the resources necessary to start or complete their higher education.

CGA Educational Foundation college scholarships are open to high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students who are dependents of employees or are themselves employed by a California Grocers Association member company. Recipients must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student during the upcoming academic term.

Legacy scholarships are established to honor individuals, families, or companies with an annual scholarship in their name. Each Legacy scholarship represents a long-term commitment of 10 years to our program. This year we are pleased to add several new Legacy scholarships including the Jim & Judy Van Gorkom Legacy, the Joe & Dolly Falvey Legacy, the Mike & Renee Stigers Legacy and the Treasury Wine Estates Legacy Scholarships.

Member-funded Donor scholarships are unrestricted contributions to our scholarship fund. Donors include Anheuser-Busch, Ms. Ellyn Gelson & Mr. Bill Roulette, Bristol Farms, Mr. Eric Hanks, the Illuminators Educational Foundation, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and Zenith Insurance Company. All are long-term contributors to the scholarship program.

Lastly, the Foundation assists CGA member companies with providing scholarships for their employees through the Piggyback Scholarship Program. Employees of participating companies apply for CGAEF scholarships, and automatically become eligible for their company’s Piggyback scholarships. In 2019, 23 member companies provide awards to their employees through CGAEF.

“The CGA Educational Foundation is proud to provide this important program to Association members,” said Foundation Scholarship Director Brianne Page. “Education costs continue to rise exponentially year over year. We recognize and thank those that have donated to the scholarship program to help defray the cost for students pursuing a higher education. It highlights our industry’s commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders.”

For more information on the scholarship program or to get your company involved, contact Brianne Page at [email protected] or (916) 448–3545.

The CGA Educational Foundation created its Scholarship Endowment honoring its 25th anniversary of supporting the industry with financial assistance and educational opportunities. The endowment will perpetually award scholarships to grocery industry employees through an initial investment totaling $250,000 from Founders Circle Members Acosta Sales & Marketing/Clorox, The Albertsons Companies Foundation, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Coca-Cola, Dean Foods/Got Milk, Frito-Lay, The Kellogg Company, Raley’s, Stater Bros. Markets Charities, Southern Glazers Wine & Spirits, and Unilever.

In honor of the Foundation’s past and future Hall of Achievement Inductees, the CGA Educational Foundation established the Legends of the Industry Scholarship as part of the Scholarship Endowment. This scholarship is an annual $10,000 scholarship awarded to an employee pursuing a career in the grocery and/or grocery-related manufacturing industries.

IN HIS WORDSWithout the stability that this industry that I call home has provided, the life of my family and I

would not be the same. Throughout my time working in the grocery industry I have learned many things from those who have come before me. It is my desire to give back to the future generation of grocery workers to sustain the longevity of this industry. I currently am working toward earning a master’s degree in organizational leadership studies. While the courses that I am taking are helpful in my everyday life as a store manager, my dream is that they will serve a much greater purpose down the road.

Managing personnel is an art form which at times seems to have lost its way. The livelihood of this amazing business rests on the shoulders of the workforce within the day to day operations. I would like to be at the forefront leading the way into the future with the tools that were obtained from the classroom and my many years of experience. As a senior executive I would like to use my college background to implement trainings and classes that promote an educational platform.
