A member of Goldtrap-Gardner Boys & Girls Club unit since 2001, Taylor has been honing her photography skills over the past three or four years, taking copious photos and entering many of them in the annual contests held each spring. This is the first year her work has been seen beyond the local Fort Smith contest, advancing to the SW Regional con- test hosted by the Larimer County Boys & Girls Club in Fort Collins, CO and then to the national contest in Atlanta, Georgia. Her winning photo entitled “Watering the Pool” placed first in the Color Process category (ages 13-15), and received outstanding respons- es from both the regional and the national judges. Taylor will be joining the other national winners in a four-day all-expense paid trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS HONORED AT ANNUAL LUNCHEON Thirty-three scholarship applicants were awarded funding by the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Clubs scholarship program for 2006-2007. Eleven of the students are first time recipients of the financial gifts. Scholarships were announced at the annual Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Scholarship Awards luncheon held June 12 at the Holiday Inn. The scholarships were made possible by Jim & June Alexander, who established the program in 1985. This year’s scholarship recipients will be receiving over $27,000 in financial support. Since the creation of the program, 409 awards have been granted. 189 individual club members have received scholarships from the program during the past 21 years. Applicants must have participated in the Club as a member or volunteer for a minimum of two years. Academic excellence, Boys & Girls Club partici- pation, and need are key ingredients that commit- tee judges consider while making scholarship selections. The FSBGC scholarship committee conducts interviews with all new applicants. Funding sources for scholarships include: Jim & June Alexander; FSBGC Alumni Association; Steven D. Jenkins memorial fund; Reid Bartlett Plunkett memorial and Grant Elison Plunkett memorial; Vic Forsgren memorial; Robert A. Young IV memorial; Bob Needham Sr. memorial; Dr. S. Reaves Lee memorial; Sean Amos memorial. Applications for 2007-2008 college scholar- ship funding will be available in January 2007. Former Staff MemberDies at Age 50

Alvin Matlock, whowas the Stephens Boys &Girls Club unit directorfrom 1988-1992, died April19, 2006 from a heart com-plications. Matlock was anactive member of the Clubduring his childhood. Alvinwas a professional musi-cian and was well respectedthroughout the region forhis outstanding talents. Herecently toured with hisJazz trio through the

Arkansas Arts Council. In 1991, Matlock won anational award from Boys & Girls Clubs of Americafor his “Ebony & Ivory” piano classes at the Fort SmithBoys & Girls Club.

Matlock lived in Fayetteville and was organist forthe St. James Baptist Church. He is survived by hiswife Loretta, three sons and four daughters.

ALYSE EADY NAMED SOUTHWESTREGIONAL “YOUTH OF THE YEAR”

Fort Smith Boys & Girls Cub member Alyse Eady has been selectedas a top 5 finalist for National “Youth of the Year” by Boys & Girls Clubsof America. Eady was selected State Youth of the Year in April. Whilerepresenting Arkansas, she competed against seven other state winners atthe Southwest Regional competition. The Regional contest was held inDallas

Being selected Southwest Regional Youth of the Year is quite anhonor for the 2006 Southside High School graduate. Eady has been amember of the Club for the past 11 years. She has been a volunteer“Power Hour” instructor at theJeffrey unit for the past 4 years. In2004, Eady was recognized byPresident Bush for her outstandingservice to the Boys & Girls Club.

With the title of SoutwestRegional Youth of the year, Eadywill receive a $10,000 college schol-arship from the Boys & Girls Clubsof America. The winner of theNational Youth of the Year willreceive an additional $15,000. Thisis the 3rd time the Fort Smith Boys& Girls Club has has a member inthe National finals during the past15 years. Rick Nagel was SouthwestRegional Youth of the Year in 1991and Thomas James was theSouthwest Regional Youth of theYear in 1998.

Eady plans to attend Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia thisfall and major in mass communications. At Southside, Eady was a mem-ber of the track team, gymnastics, cheerleading, National Honor Society,FCA, FBLA, choir and the Senior Council. She has worked at theStephens Boys & Girls Club the past two summers. Alyse is no strangerto the national Boys & Girls Club platform. In 2004, she was guest per-former at the national Boys & Girls clubs of America conference dinner,

where she met Academy Awardwinning actor DenzelWashington

Alyse is the daughter ofLewis and Lady Eady. Her twobrothers, Martin and Scott, arepast members of the Boys &Girls Club. Martin recentlygraduated from Vanderbilt andis attending Law School at theUniversity of Arkansas. Scott,also attend U of A and is major-ing in Business.

The gift was acontribution to the Club from co-workers of Kevin Cole. Cole is a man-ager for Ernst & Young in Chicago. He is a former FSBGC CollegeScholarship recipient and a graduate of the University of Arkansas.Cole was the guest speaker at the annual FSBGC College Scholarshipluncheon hosted by the FSBGC board of directors on July 12 at theHoliday Inn. Kevin now serves as a board member with the Martin LutherKing Jr. Boys & Girls Club in Chicago. During his speech to the scholars,Cole emphasized the importance of taking advantage of opportunities andthe value of hard work.

PEOPLE IN THE NEWSDorothy Rappeport - was honored with the pres-tigious Leadership Fort Smith “Jack WhiteLeadership Award” at a ceremony held on June 22.Dot served as capital campaign coordinator for theEvans Boys & Girls in 2002. She helped raise $2.5million for the new facility.

Thomas “TJ” James - 1998 Fort Smith Boys &Girls Club Youth of the Year who was namedSouthwest Regional Youth of the Year by Boys &Girls Clubs of America (the same year), recentlyreceived his Masters of Business Administrationdegree from the University of Arkansas. T.J. is arecent graduate of Leadership Fort Smith and isemployed by Merrill Lynch.

Joseph Meadows - was a contestant on the CBSTV hit series “Amazing Race” this past season.Joseph and his girl friend Monica Cayce, formed“team MoJo” during their ventures around theworld. They finished 4th out of 10 teams. Josephwas a member of the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Clubduring the 1990’s, where his father Jim was a vol-unteer baseball coach. Joseph’s sister Amandahas been a long-time mentor in the Club’s “LeanOn Me” program.

Jim Hanna - was presented a CommunityLeadership Award for his outstanding contributionsto the city. Hanna, a former Fort Smith Boys &Girls Club board member, has been active in sev-eral community projects, including: Chamber ofCommerce, UA Fort Smith, Fort Smith PublicLibrary, Harbor House, Sparks Hospital, the UnitedWay and the Airport Commission.

Sam T. Sicard - is serving as Chairman of theupcoming United Way campaign. Sicard is a longtime Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club volunteer coachand mentor. His wife Jennifer has served as amentor and Drill team insturctor at the Club. Sicardis employed by First National Bank.

Eric Williams - a former member of the StephensBoys & Girls Club, has been hired to work for thenew Boys & Girls Club in Alma, Arkansas. Grandopening for the Alma facility was held July 14.Williams formerly worked for the Boys & Girls Clubin Conway.

MAURICE KATZER CLASSICHunts Park was the site of the 25th annual

Maurice Katzer American Legion Tournament,where Fort Smith Kerwins defeated Rogers 11-3.Kerwins exploded with 10 runs in the fourth inningto take the title.

It was a back-to-back Katzer title for CoachDenny Lundquist. “We are happy to be part of thetradition of the Katzer tournament” said Lundquist.“Kerwins has been very successful over the yearsparticipating in this event” he added.

Outfielder Kyp Matlock was named “MostValuable Player” of the tourney. Matlock, whoattends Carl Albert College in Poteau, has been abig part of the Kerwins lineup for the past 3 sea-sons.

The Kerwin American Legion team will partic-ipate in the Zone 4 tournament at Crowder Field atthe UA Fort Smith campus. Kerwins won the statechampionship in 2004 and was state runner-up in2005.

GENTRY AND STEGALL SIGNPRO BASEBALL CONTRACTS

Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club mem-bers Craig Gentry and Daniel Stegall signed pro-fessional baseball contracts following the June2006 Major League draft. Both played baseball forthe Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club, and were bothmembers of the Kerwins American Legion team(during different seasons).

Craig Gentry played college baseball two yearsat UA Fort Smith. He then was the starting center-fielder for the Arkansas Razorbacks. After his sen-ior season at Arkansas, he was drafted by the TexasRangers. Gentry was an outstanding basketballplayer at the Goldtrap-Gardner unit during hisyouth.

Stegall is a 2006 graduate of Greenwood HighSchool. He was a member of the KerwinsAmerican Legion team in 2005. Stegall playedsports as a youngster at the Evans Boys & GirlsClub. He originally signed a letter of intent to playquarterback for the Miami Hurricane football team,but decided to give professional baseball a chancewith a lucrative signing bonus offered by the NewYork Mets.
