IMPORTANT INFORMATION:High power LEDs must be used in conjunction withconstant current output power supply PLR, PLU,PLS, PLD or RGBox.

A maximum of 9 LEDs may be connected to onepower supply (PLU/350 1-9).

Always ensure that the temperature of the circuitboard does not exceed 85°C.

When wiring high power LEDs they must be wired inseries and not in parallel.

Incorrect wiring of LEDs can result in irreparabledamage to the LEDs and power supply.

182 WIRING INFORMATION

Not using a constant current LED driver

Why? – If you wire a LUXEON LED to a conventional transformer or constantvoltage LED driver, the LED will be destroyed.

LUXEON LEDs are high power LEDs and must be run on constant current. EachLED requires supplying with a different voltage in order to be fed with a 350mAor 700mA constant current. For this reason they must be wired in series.

Connecting the power supply to the mains supply before connecting to the LED

Why? – Constant current power supplies will ‘ramp up’ to their maximumvoltage in the event of an open circuit. When the LED is then connected they arebeing connected to a massive over-voltage. If the power supply has beenconnected to the mains supply with an open circuit, ensure the output terminalsare short circuited to discharge the power supply internal capacitors beforeconnecting any LEDs.

Switching the LED on the low voltage side of the power supply

Why? – For the same reasons as previous question.

Not having proper thermal control for the LED

Why? – The LUXEON LED is a high power LED. It has a small core where thelight is produced. This core gets hot very quickly. Overheating of LED willseverely shorten the life of the LED, and reduce light output. It is thereforenecessary to ensure proper thermal design of all LED applications to ensurethat the heat is removed from the core of the LED and dissipated elsewhere.

FAQWhy do the colour of LEDs vary so much? (colour binning)

Unfortunately because Luxeon LED are at the cutting edge of technology andLED production, the colour temperature of the Luxeon LED cannot beguaranteed. Although Luxeon do currently grade LEDs into colour ‘bins’ thecolour variation within these bins is still significant to the human eye. Whendesigning schemes using Luxeon LED, it is important that they should bedesigned to not be sensitive to the colour temperature of the LEDs light.

Why must LUXEON LEDs be wired in series?

To achieve the same current throughout a circuit, it is necessary to wire inseries. Circuits wired in Parallel will have a constant Voltage, and circuits wiredin Series will have a constant current for all components in the circuit.

What voltage do the LUXEON LEDs run on?

There is no answer to this question, except somewhere between 2 and 4 volts.Every LUXEON LED requires a different voltage but a constant current.

What is the output voltage of the constant current drivers?

The output voltage varies depending on how many LED are wired into the seriescircuit. The more LEDs wired into the circuit, the higher the voltage.

What is the maximum voltage of the Constant Current drivers?

Each driver has its own maximum voltage, but all Collingwood drivers have amaximum voltage of below 50VDC ie Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV)

Can LUXEON LEDs be used in bathrooms and swimming pools?

Yes, (assuming the enclosure has appropriate IP rating) but always bear in mindthe maximum voltage of the driver in the event of an open circuit. Be carefulwhen selecting the driver. Certain areas of bathrooms and swimming pools havemaximum voltage requirements of less than normal Safety Extra Low Voltageeg, bathroom Zone 1, max voltage 30 VDC this means that PLR and PLS couldbe used, but PLU could not.

Can LUXEON LEDs be used in saunas?

Yes and No. All equipment installed in sauna areas C and D must be suitable forambient temperature of 125°C. As with bathroom areas, saunas have specificvoltage requirements. If an LED is run constantly at high temperature its lifeand light output will be severely limited. Only fit LED products where thetemperature of the LED can be effectively controlled.

Si vous n’utilisez pas de transformateur au courant constant pour les LEDs

Pourquoi? – Si vous reliez une LED à un transformateur classique ou à untransformateur LED à tension constante, La LED ne marchera plus.

Les Leds LUXEON sont des LEDs d’haute puissance et fonctionnent seulementau courant constant. Chaque LED exige une tension différente pour alimenterun courant constant de 350mA ou 700mA. Alors on doit les installer en série.

Si l’on relie le transformateur au secteur avant de relier aux LEDs

Pourquoi? – Si un circuit est ouvert les transformateurs au courant constantvont monter à leur tension maximum. Quand les LEDs sont reliées elles sontreliées à une surcharge énorme. Si le transformateur a été relié au secteur avecun circuit ouvert, assurez-vous que les bornes de puissance fournie sont encourt-circuit pour décharger les condensateurs internes du transformateuravant de relier à aucune LED.

N’installez pas de commutateur sur le coté de tension basse du secteur

Pourquoi? – Pour les mêmes raisons mentionnées ci-dessus.

Si l’on ne vérifie pas la température thermique des LEDs

Pourquoi? – Les LEDs LUXEON sont des LEDs d’haute puissance. Elles ont unpetit noyau ou se reproduit la lumière. Ce noyau se rechauffe très vite. Lesurchauffage des LEDs va réduire la durée de vie énormement et réduire lapuissance de lumière fournie. Alors on doit dessiner Les LEDs pour assurer lecontrole thermique pour que le noyau soit refroidi et dissipé ailleurs.

Oui, (on suppose qu’on utilise un encastrement au classement IP (classementd’étanchéité) mais il faut toujours considérer la tension maximum dutransformateur si le circuit est ouvert. Faites attention quand vous achetez letransformateur. Quelques zones de salles de bains et de piscines ont besoind’une tension maximum sous les normes de sécurité de tension extra-bas parexemple zone 1 de salle de bains, tension de 30 VDC. Alors on y peut utiliserPLR et PLS mais pas PLU.

On peut utiliser les LUXEON LEDs dans le sauna?

Oui et non. Toutes les installations dans les Zones C et D doivent supporter unetemperature de 125 dég C. Comme les zones de salle de bains, les saunas ontbesoin d’une tension spécifique. I LED utilizzati in questi prodotti sono LED di potenza e devono esserealimentati ad una corrente costante pari 350 mA, per questa ragione devonoessere cablati in serie.

Connettere l’alimentatore alla rete prima di connettere i LED

Perchè ? - Infatti l'alimentatore a corrente costante connesso alla rete si portaalla sua massima tensione di uscita quando il circuito è aperto: se a questopunto il LED viene collegato subisce una forte sovratensione. Se l'alimentatoreviene collegato alla rete con un circuito aperto assicurarsi che i terminalid’uscita siano corto-cituitati per scaricare le sovratensioni residue (dovute aicondensatori interni) prima di collegare i LED.

Interrompendo il circuito su lato a bassa tensione (quello dei LED)

Perchè ? – I LED si danneggiano alla riaccensione per il motivo spiegato nelpunto precedente.

Non prevedendo un adeguato controllo termico

Perchè ? – Nei LED di potenza utilizzati la luce viene prodotta da uncomponente miniaturizzato che si scalda molto velocemente: unsurriscaldamento del LED ne riduce la vita e l'emissione di luce. È quindinecessario una corretto studio dell'installazione per fare in modo che il caloreprodotto dal LED venga dissipato altrove.

¿Por qué? – Si conectas un LED Luxeon a un transformador convencional o a untransformador con un voltaje constante, el LED se estropeará.

Los LEDs Luxeon son LEDs de alta potencia y deben funcionar con unacorriente constante. Cada LED requiere un voltaje diferente para poder estaralimentado por una corriente constante de 350mA o 700mA. Por esta razón lainstalación debe de efectuarse en serie.

Conectar el transformador a la red principal antes de instalar los LEDs

¿Por qué? – Los transformadores de corriente constante necesitan ‘arrancarse’para alcanzar en un circuito abierto su máximo voltaje. Cualquier LEDconectado recibiría entonces una sobrecarga enorme. Cuando el transformadoresté conectado a la red principal, en un circuito abierto, asegúrese que loscables de salida estén debidamente conectados al tomatierra para descargarlos condensadores internos antes de conectar cualquier LED.

Conectar el LED en la parte de bajo voltaje del transformador

¿Por que? – Por las mismas razones que en la pregunta anterior.

No disponer de un control térmico adecuado

¿Por qué? – El LED Luxeon es un LED de alta potencia en el cual un diminutocomponente produce luz. Este componente se calienta rápidamente. Uncalentamiento en exceso acorta drásticamente la vida del LED y reduce laemisión de la luz. Es por ello necesario asegurarse de un diseño anti-térmicoapropiado en todas las aplicaciones con LEDs y procurar que el calor se aleje deeste componente del LED hacia otras partes.
