Getting started... I reached out to WashU alumni and others that had work experience at Epic, and asked them about their personal experience and Epic’s company culture. It was sometimes very difficult to get a read on the software companies without knowing or talking to someone who has experience working at that company. I enjoyed a lot of aspects of my internship, from the casual dress code to the intricately themed buildings; but I particularly enjoyed the freedom that I was given with my project. I was tasked with creating a prototype for a breast lesion history visualization tool that will be implemented in a future version of Epic’s software. Knowing that my work would ultimately have a real world impact on countless clinicians and patients, I found myself able to truly dedicate and invest myself into my programming. My internship take-away... I would absolutely recommend this internship! The projects are challenging and fun, as you develop the foundation for new meaningful applications that will eventually be implemented into Epic’s software. Epic has a wonderful company culture and truly appreciates software developers that are unique, confident, and cooperative. It also doesn’t hurt that Epic loves to spoil the interns with fun trips and activities throughout the summer! FROM PASSION SPRINGS PURPOSE

I was a Software Development Intern at Epic, located in Madison, WI.

Getting started...

I reached out to WashU alumni and others that had work experience at Epic, and asked them about their personal experience and Epic’s company culture. It was sometimes very difficult to get a read on the software companies without knowing or talking to someone who has experience working at that company. I utilized the Career Center’s walk-in hours for resume and cover letter editing. The career advisers really helped sharpen my application documents to help secure my internship. The professors here at WashU have definitely been the greatest influence on my career discovery process; often acting as mentors – pushing me

to explore new career options and to be the engineer that I am today.

Bringing my story to life...

I enjoyed a lot of aspects of my internship, from the casual dress code to the intricately themed buildings; but I particularly enjoyed the freedom that I was given with my project. My mentor tasked me with an open-ended goal, and I was free to decide how to best design, organize, and implement my code. I was tasked with creating a prototype for a breast lesion history visualization tool that will be implemented in a future version of Epic’s software. Knowing that my work would ultimately have a real world impact on countless

clinicians and patients, I found myself able to truly dedicate and invest myself into my programming.
