TEAM NEWS

Fall is here. It is hard to believe that summer is behind us and winter is quickly approaching. Continue to check your child’s agenda daily for assignments and upcoming tests. Our website can be accessed through the Wheeler homepage.

First period math will be applying rational numbers in Chapter 3. We will be studying decimal and fraction operations and applications. Periods 2 and 7 will be finishing up number theory and fractions in Chapter 4 and will begin Chapter 5, Number theory and Fractions. Before fall break, students will be taking a quarterly exam covering all areas of study this quarter. The quarterly test counts as 10% of a student’s total math grade.

For science this month, we will continue with our study of planetary science. We will be focusing on seasons, moon phases, and the Solar System. We will be learning how seasons are related to the amount of solar energy transferred to Earth, which is af-fected by latitude, the tilt of Earth's axis, revolution, and rotation. We will be taking our field trip to the Challenger Learning Center the first week of October. The students will participate in “Mission to Mars”.

In Social Studies, we continue to work on the various strategies for reading, summarizing, taking notes, and comprehension of non-fiction text with a concentration on Ancient Rome, Chapter 13. Students will complete an Ancient Rome webquest. Contin-ue checking the website for homework and informational updates. Please note that Social Studies homework is subject to change.

All language arts classes are working on narrative writing this quarter.

The following novels are being studied as well:

Helmuth – A Wrinkle in Time Howard and Croell – Tuck Everlasting

THE COLONEL’S CHRONICLE

TEAM DENALI MOUNTAIN TOP NEWS—SEVENTH GRADE

Parents, please remember to check your son/daughter’s agenda book as well as their academic standing on RDS! Thank you.

In Science, we are continuing with our Earth Science unit. We will be studying Rocks, Minerals, and Plate Tecton-ics.

For math, please be checking your student’s agenda book and/or my daily website calendar for assignments and information on upcoming events. The RDS portal is a great way to keep up on how your child is doing on daily as-signments and tests. The 1st round of Acuity testing will take place on October 4th and the 1st Quarter Cumula-tive exam will be on Oct. 20th.

In Social Studies, we will be covering the Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia. We will be examining the geogra-phy, history and culture of these areas. Please check my calendar on the Colonel Wheeler web site for a weekly schedule of assignments and homework. Updating the agenda book daily will help keep up with daily work.

Mrs. Bateman looks forward to returning at the end of October. She is excited to begin inquiry reading with your student.

In English Lab, we will be learning the function of a preposition in a sentence and how the use of prepositions en-hances writing. We will be learning characterization and understanding how characters are involved in the plot of a story.

The Timbers are not becoming dormant for winter!

Tall Timber students are actively involved in many activities during the month of October. Probably most important in the students’ minds is getting ready to go to the Challenger Learning Center. In science they are preparing for the upcoming October trip and students will be going either on the 10th or the 17th of this month. They will also be going to study the phases of the moon. Social studies classes will be leaving behind the geography standards units and begin the study of the Ancient Greek civilization. Math students in the honors class will begin working with algebraic equations and integers. Regular math classes will study all four operations with decimals, prime factorization, and divisibility. Problem solving is always a focus of study in math classes and students will be preparing for the quarterly exam to be taken prior to the end of the grading period. Language arts classes will continue with their reading of novels, either Hatchet or A Wrinkle in Time. Narrative writing is the focus of this quarter and journal writing continues. We will also be doing a fall nature observation to promote descriptive writ-ing and continue with diagramming of sentence parts. Spelling and vocabulary lists of study come from the novel at hand or from Greek and Latin word roots and homophones. Grammar units include pronouns, adjectives and adverbs and daily oral language mini-lessons.

Also beginning in October, students from the high school come to our classrooms to talk about relational aggression, the term we of older generations know more likely as bullying. They will come once a month through the spring to spend time discussing, instructing, and role playing many activities with our students through a program known as C.A.S.S., which stands for Creating a Safe School. It quickly becomes one of the more popular activities of sixth grade!

Finally, we just finished taking the first round of Acuity tests. The results will help us to regroup our RTI classes and develop lessons to remediate any missing skills your children have in language arts and math or challenge them to think be-yond! We close the month with the end of the grading period, when students will need all twelve points for their AR points. Grade cards are online, so be prepared to check them the last week of October, and then enjoy the four-day weekend including Halloween!

TEAM KALAHARI—SEVENTH GRADE

Team:

We are already more than half-way through the first quarter and the school year is in full swing. Remember to make sure students are keeping their agenda books up-to-date to stay organized, as this is one of the keys to stu-dent success. Please feel free to visit our individual webpages on the Colonel Wheeler webpage, under Team/Teacher Sites, where, aside from class information, we also list our daily homework assignments. RDS is also a great way to keep an eye on your child’s progress. Please feel free to contact us at any time, as communica-tion is one of the most critical factors in student success. You can contact us at [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] with any questions.

Core Classes:

In Science, we are in a “Rockin’ Unit” covering Rocks and Minerals. Students will learn different types of rocks and minerals, work to identify different rocks based on their properties, and understand that the rock cycle is a process that takes place from past to present. This month in Math, we will wrap up our work with Chapter 2, and begin Chapter 3. Chapter 3 deals with addition, subtraction, division and multiplication of decimals and fractions. Dur-ing the first week of October we will also be taking Acuity tests, and during the third week we will take our quar-terly exam. This exam will be a large factor in students’ grades for the quarter. In Mr. Betz's Social Studies class the students will be learning the history and geography of Southwest and Central Asia.

This month in English, the students just finished our first essay and acuity testing. We will start our next short story unit, emphasizing comprehension and basic literary terms.

Lab Classes:

In Math lab, we are taking real life situations and bringing it to the classroom. The students have been learning how to be creative problem solvers and critical thinkers as we continue our unit on problem solving. They have been using various strategies to solve problems with the help of their group members. During the next unit we will be using a financial context to expand on the students' knowledge of integers.

In Language Arts lab, we will be learning the function of a preposition in a sentence and how the use of preposi-tions enhances writing. We will also be learning characterization and understanding how characters are involved in the plot of a story.

TEAM LEGENDS—EIGHTH GRADE

In English, the students of Team Legends will be studying poetry. They will read poems various types of poems such as odes, elegies and sonnets by a variety of authors including John Keats, Amy Lowell and William Shake-speare. The students will explore elements of poetry such as similes, metaphors, imagery and hyperbole.

In Science, the students will be working on Chemical reactions galore and a crime scene which will occur soon. This will be a great activity for the students to learn about detective work and to use problem-solving skills.

In Math, we will be working on Geometry (Areas and Volumes). The students will know the area and volume for-mulas of shapes like rectangles and squares. This is an attempt to explain all the basic area and volume formulas. We will start with the easy ones and build up to the more difficult formulas for the area and volume of two and three dimensional objects.

In Social Studies, we are exploring the 13 original colonies in class. The students are working on a group project that requires them to explore interesting facts about their colony and the people that lived there. This activity is called the “Colonel Marketing Kit.” They are also learning about the “First Thanksgiving” with the Wampanoag Indians and the English colonists. They will be doing an online scavenger hunt that requires them to learn about the Pilgrims and the many tribes of the 1600’s.

During social studies class, we will be studying the 13 Original Colonies, and recognize the properties that lead to the beginning of the American Revolution. We will also be working on a group project called the Colony Press Kit. Throughout this activity, the students will research the Colonies in depth. The project is due on Oct. 5th.

English class is beginning a new project titled “All About Me From A to Z.” This project requires the students to research their family history and create several different papers based upon family and their perspective while growing up. Throughout this experience, expect your children to come to you researching their family backgrounds and sharing different stories that they have experienced growing up.

CAFETERIA

Crown Point Community Schools has earned national recognition for our schools because they meet high standards in school nutrition. Please know that we support school lunches that are brought from home but remember to help us by packing healthy items for our students. Fast food items don’t always meet the criteria set by USDA and the Healthier US School Challenge Award and are not welcomed in our cafeterias. The Crown Point Community School Corporation encourages you to support our efforts to create a healthy school nutrition environment.

PTA

Internet Safety Presentation – You can never know too much about protecting your child(ren) from the many dangers of the internet! Our guest speaker is George Tachtiris, Director of Technology/Media for the Crown Point Schools. The presentation is on Tuesday, October 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of Colonel Wheeler, located within the main doors. He will be covering:

Inappropriate Contact –Teach kids how to recognize and protect themselves against contact with cyber-bullies, hackers, phishers, and predators. People aren't always who they say they are. Teach kids to keep away from Internet strangers: the Internet is a place to enhance existing relationships, not a place to meet new people.

Inappropriate Content- This includes both content that is viewed and content that is uploaded by kids. Help kids un-derstand that the Internet is forever: Everything they post online is tracked and stored and will follow them to future job interviews and college entrance interviews.

Inappropriate Conduct – Because the web environment can feel anonymous, some youth become dis-inhibited. Teach kids that the Internet is a public forum. Anonymity is a myth. Help them be the good person online that they are when they're off line. He will also offer some tips and resources for parents. The presentation is for parents/guardians/grandparents only – no children.

8th Grade Parents - Please join us on October 13th at 6:30 p.m. as the Colonel Wheeler PTA hosts the administration from Crown Point High School as they share important information and dates about the 8th grade to 9th grade transition process. Information on the scheduling process, ACT Explore testing, and orientation will be shared. We will meet in Colonel Wheeler’s Auditeria.

Holiday Shopping – Get a jump-start to your holiday shopping! We will be hosting our 3rd Craft and Vendor Fair on November 12th from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Colonel Wheeler. We have a few spots still available for crafters and vendors if you are interested in joining us! Email [email protected] for more information.

Stadium Chairs and Rhinestone Bulldog T-Shirts – Does your bottom get sore sitting on hard bleachers? We have a solution! We are selling customizable Bulldog Stadium Chairs that are of such high quality they will last for years and years! Check out the picture on the Colonel Wheeler website. Chairs can be purchased through the main office for $39.95 – they make great gifts! We also are selling Rhinestone Bulldog and Bulldog Mom t-shirts for $22 in red and black. Email us at [email protected] for more information.

PTA Meetings – Join us and help give input to our many plans throughout the school year! We promise we won’t as-sign you to anything you don’t want to be a part of! Mr. Vassar joins us each month to share school happenings and answer parent questions. We’d love to see you there! Our meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. (October 4th and November 1st are the next two dates) in the Community Room.

Reflections – We are proud to once again participate in the National Reflections Arts Program! This program recogniz-es the wonderful artistic talents of children and we’ve had many students win awards at the state and national levels! This year’s theme is “Diversity Is….” Students will be able to sign up during lunch presentations for the various catego-ries and more information can provided by emailing [email protected].

ART DEPARTMENT

6th Graders will end their ACM rotation this month as they continue to design their own bulldog, create a dream catcher inspired by Native Americans, and create a flying helicopter inspired by DaVinci himself.

7th Graders have begun their Japanese or Chinese painting. Students chose the culture of their choice and researched visuals and information to come up with an interesting composition that incorporated these ideas. One of our 7th grade classes has a great opportunity to learn from a classmate who is from China. He has been an excellent help and is very excited to teach his classmates about his native country.

Our 8th graders finished up their clay project and are now working on plaster sculptures inspired by Pop Art. These sculptures will be three dimensional and formed by various sculpting techniques such as casting and creating armature. They will take the form of common, ordinary, every day objects that offer a slice of American life.

We have three 8th grade students who did an outstanding job on their T-Shirt prints we did at the beginning of the quar-ter. Darrian Dalton, Alyssa Bennett, and Jacob R. Johnson now have their shirts on display at Mike’s Sporting Goods, Crown Point. Please stop by and see these great designs!

Ms. T’s 8th grade class has a great opportunity this month as their records will be on display. Students were inspired by various artists and techniques and used these ideas on painted vinyl records. These artworks will be shown at the Crown Town Grill on the square during the month of October. Stop by and enjoy some food and student artwork!!!

You can also see student artworks on display at the Crown Point Community School’s Central Office during the month of October. Please stop by and see your child’s creativity in person!!!

ART CLUB

Students are working hard on Veteran’s day souvenirs this month as part of a community outreach project. More infor-mation on this will follow. They are also in the process of designing this year’s Art Club membership T-Shirt.

Technology Use and Permission in Our School If you have not granted use of the Internet by your child please consider these important points: Computer literacy is an essential skill in the modern world, where technological skills are increasingly more vital to succeeding in the 21st Century. We have the ability to enhance your child's education through the use of technol-ogy, including the Internet. Access to the Internet is required to participate in essential components of our curricu-lum, such as:

Accelerated Reader Everyday Math Activities Grolier Online Encyclopedia Online Book Searches via Destiny The Indiana Department of Education requires technology instruction, including the responsible use of the In-

ternet.

COMMUNITY

Is there a remarkable someone (school employee, student, etc.) you know who has a special talent or goes above and beyond to make their school or community a better place, and you would like the community to know about this person? Please nominate them for a special feature, “Getting to Know,” in the Times newspaper at [email protected].

Join the fun Saturday, October 22nd from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the Crown Point Pumpkin Festival. Carve a pumpkin and bring it with a candle to the Square to encircle the Courthouse. Take it home after the event. Pumpkin games with prizes for everyone, music, a costume parade, line dancing, a Solon Robinson re-enactor and hayrides begin at the Courthouse. Indian lore and handicrafts to make and take home will be featured at the Wellington Clark Homestead on Court Street. Volunteers will read spooky ghost stories at the Sheriff’s House from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. The entire event is free. Sponsored by the Lake Courthouse Foundation, Sheriff’s House Foundation and the Old Homestead Preservation Society, we are promoting the city’s rich history with a festival of entertainment for all ages. For more information, call Karen at 663-7678 or Marty at 663-0660.
