4.9 education factsThe New England colonies were required to have public schools. The puritans support for education was driven by their desire for their kids to read the bible.The southern colonies were wealthy planters who hired tutors to educate younger children. Middle colonies were religious groups and families that built church schools. Each religious group or family had to decide to educate their children. Others were home schooled.

Funding the schoolsTo encourage education, Massachusetts passed a law that required every town with 50 families or more to hire an instructor to teach their children to read and write. Towns with 100 families were required to build a school. Parents were asked to contribute what ever they could spare to the school. This meant money vegetables, fire wood and anything else the school needed. Often lad was set aside for school fields or meadows.

School Structures Schools were one room buildings, with a chimney, and a fireplace in the center. There were no maps, or boards to right on. Pencils and paper were scarce. Students shouted out spelling words, and wrote sums in ink, on pieces of bark. There was usually one book the, New England Primer, which was used to teach the alphabet, syllables and prayers.

Families 4.10In colonial times families were often made up of as much as 20 people. That included grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and step children all living in the same house. People in colonial times often married in their 20s. Men outnumbered women throughout the colonies. As a result almost every woman was assured to marriage, as you can see by our pie chart. Maids servants of good stock got to pick the men that they were married to.

Large FamiliesColonial families were every large. Many families had up to ten children. Farm families ,in particular, needed all the hands they could get! The kids had to help around the farm and they all got a equal share of the chores. The women gave birth many times, but nearly halve of the children died before they reached adulthood. If a person died, their spouse would remarry quickly. Thus there was a lot of stepchildren, as well as orphans.
