Kelly Roberts, President

(Kelly is being held captive somewhere in Georgia by his employer. Joe Lile is substituting this month. ed)

We are into that time of year when most of us will be putting the Baby away for the winter. I’ve found that if the wipers are left in contact with the glass they take a “set” and will make a noise on the backstroke. Putting a block of wood under the arms or taking them off solves this nicely. A can of Stabil in the tank and a breatheable car cover and she’s in storage. The battery can be removed if you like. I don’t do this because I start the car once a month, let it warm up, and roll it up and down the drive. That way the tires and bearings are in a different spot. I also run the A/C compressor for a minute or two. If you know you won’t be taking the car out on the road you can drop the insurance (except for comp) for these months and save a few bucks. What does a car nut do in the winter to get their fix? Talking to fellow addicts helps. Going to the North American International Auto Show or to the Henry Ford Museum will also work. Going karting in February is a great fix for the track junkies. Pictures and videos of the summer past are a sort

of band aid for what ails us. There will be times though when your significant other will see you drowsing over excellence or staring off into space and wonder, “What’s wrong now?” Not to worry. Springtime cures all. On a different track we are thinking of taking a different approach to the way we plan events. The format will be proposed and discussed at the December meeting so come to Tom Green’s house December 2nd and see what’s up. Only board members can vote but any RSR member can listen in or add their two cents worth. No one will try to coerce you in to doing anything so why not show up? It’s FYI.

Rally Sport

The Second Annual Captain Wrongway Peach Fuzz Color Tour The second annual Captain Wrongway Peach Fuzz color tour took place on a very brisk Sunday, October 17th. Twenty-six Porsches of all varieties were in attendance as well as one Ferrari. The tour started in Hartland and meandered its way through country roads to the west and north-west; eventually stopping in the City of Fenton. Actually, Fenton marked the halfway point of the tour – with convenient parking behind the police department. Many of the tourists found the French Laun-dry a suitable resting spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and fine baked goods. The second half of the tour saw some interesting northern Oakland and southern Genesee County country roads around Holly, Grand Blanc, Atlas and Goodrich. The tour ended at Cranberries restau-rant in Goodrich. The folks at Cranberries opened the restaurant to us as private party and we were treated as royalty with great food and service – all told there were forty two of us making the trek for dinner! For those of you not familiar with the tour we offer directions to lead through the countryside and to make things just a little interesting we couple these directions with absurdly ridiculous questions about the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon series that originally aired on television in the 1960’s. Amaz-ingly, two couples answered all four questions correctly; both won a complementary dinner at Cran-berries. A question was raised at the dinner concerning interest in a Saturday ride leading to a one-night stay at a bed and breakfast, quaint motel or lodge and ending with a nice dinner in close proximity to the lodging. The ride would come to an end in the northwest part of the lower peninsula and be held sometime between late Spring and mid-Summer. We envision a five-hour ride, with stops, through predominantly two lane and scenic roads with comfortable and affordable lodging. Dinner can be as fancy or as not fancy depending upon the consensus of those participating. Virtually everyone at the color tour thought this was a good idea but that was only a small portion of our club. We would love to hear more thoughts about this. Please feel free to e-mail these thoughts and ideas to [email protected]. It was especially nice to continue to see new faces with each tour. We look forward to the Third Annual Captain Wrongway Peachfuzz Color Tour tentatively set for Sunday, October 16th of 2005. Please give us some feedback concerning a fair-weather ride in Spring-Summer 2005. Jim and Liz Christopher Jim holds a windy

Dear Portia,

With the holidays approaching I would like to get something for the Porsche fanatics on my list. They all get

magazines like Pano and Excellence and big-ticket items like tires and wheels are a bit pricey. Got any suggestions?

Tom the Shopper

Dear TS,

Wassamatter, you a cheapskate? Can’t spring for a set of dubs for a friend? Ha ha, just kidding. A little Valkyrie

humor. Actually those little certificates used for stocking stuffers are great. (And Portia’s stockings take a heap of stuff-

ing.) A coupon for a tank of gas would be very welcome in these troubled times. Boutique items are always good. Check

with Chuck Freitas, the RSR goodie store guy, to see what he has. Shirts, jackets, mugs, key chains are always hits (see

page 9). I hear he is going to stock a line of car themed lingerie called Victoria’s Toolkit. Just remember: Portia, like Clau-

dia, prefers diamonds.

Dear Portia,

How should I store my car for the winter? Garage Queenie

Dear GQ,

What a dumkopf question? Pull it in the garage, turn off the key and walk away. Some people put a cover on but

make sure the car is clean or you will have that lovely, just sanded look in spring. Actually Portia has told you before that

she prefers a good set of snow tires and some hill climbing in the snow. Don’t be a sissy, drive that car!

Dear Portia,

If you couldn’t have a Porsche or a BMW what would you drive?

Curious Roger @ Porschemeister

Dear CR@P,

First, Portia dares you to come closer and tell her what she could or couldn’t drive. After 3,000 years of going to

the gym Portia has 23-inch biceps so just watch it. As for cars Audi makes some really hot items. Some of their sedans are

reaching escape velocity and the awd TT is very nice. Our own track chair, the dapper Christian, gets his around the track

in very quick order. The Cadillac CTS-V is evolving into a decent sedan even if it does look like a snowplow. Portia does

not do rice rockets, thank you very much.

Portia wants to remind her fans that she will entertain any questions pertaining to cars and driving. She will gladly provide you with feedback, answers or abuse at her discretion. So don’t be shy, just Ask Portia.

BITS OF THOUGHT FROM JEFF

In this section of each issue, I would like to share bits of experience and infor-

mation to the Porsche community. This month I want to talk about “goin’ topless”, the convertible top, for example, on 911 power tops and also many other models. There are no less than 16 points of pivot, 2 synchronized lifting motors, servos, 4 micro switches and the list goes on and on. The BEST single piece of advice I have is: ob-serve, listen and look. Don’t assume that because it’s moving, it’s moving properly. When the top is 90 degrees from the ground “wiggle the top”, you can then assess the condition of the top. The right and left must mirror each other, no excessive play on either side. This is the best position to check the top because it’s in a neutral position with little strain on the components. Smooth closing operation and pin alignment can all be observed from this upright start position. Thorough maintenance, tightening piv-ots, servo arms and mounts, is essential to save costs incurred from careless observa-tion and operation. It should be looked at during a routine maintenance. Until next is-sue, “shiny side up” -Jeff
