re-discovered in their own country after their success in Britain with this 'white kids'.

There was a great lineup of Colorado stars too, with 17 Colorado blues acts at the Prefest Friday night. Recent IBC winners Lionel Young kicked off the festival on Saturday, and Dan Treanor & Afrosippi with Erica Brown were the lead-in band to Mayall. In fact, all 6 of CBS' Band finalists were in Greeley along with Afrosippi- Austin Young, Papa Juke, Eef & Blues Express, Jack Hadley, and Bad Brad. Plus the CBS 101 Youth stage was a huge success again. Bad Brad led a great youth jam (Jake Ellingson, Jake Miles, Noel Thomas, Mitch Meyer, Ryan, Adrian, and this big kid--Mac McMurray on bass). Our CBS education chairman, Jeff Kopeke, ran the kids activities, building showbox guitars with the kids and CBS also gave away Dave Kroupenske hand-made cigar box guitars to 3 lucky kids.

Get ready for the 2014 GBJ--it will be GBJ's 10th anniversary and it will be a killer!!!!!

    BLUE STAR CONNECTION INSTRUMENT DRIVE

CBS is launching a giant instrument drive to help out Blue Star Connection. In case you didn't know, Blue Star is a local organization started by Grand County Blues Society that puts musical instruments into the hands of kids with cancer and life threatening diseases. Musical instruments become a major part of their healing therapy. BSC has provided kids with instruments, as well as furnishing entire Therapy rooms in hospitals.

The problem is BSC needs more instruments. BSC can use most any instrument as long as it is in working order and in good shape. So here is the deal on how you can help and get yourself a nice perk, as well as getting that good feeling from helping these kids. You can donate two ways: donate your instrument at the Blue Star Festival in Littleton on August 3 and get FREE admission into the Festival!!! If you aren't going to the Festival, you can also get a hold of us here at CBS ([email protected] or [email protected]) and we will give you a FREE individual membership to the Colorado Blues Society ($30 value). Give us your address and we'll even arrange the pickup - if we have a Board member in the area. Bands looking for a Business membership for the IBC, we will give you that membership for two or more working instruments.

BSC can always use your cash donations as well, and if want to do that, we will gladly take your checks! Think of this like a canned food drive at Christmas except with musical instruments. Get those unused instruments out of your basement and closets and put them into the hands of some kids who will play the heck out of them. BSC is proof that music can really change lives...and save lives. Its healing powers are amazing!

    DID YOU KNOW?

While recording for Stax Records, Albert King was backed by the label's house band, Booker T & The MG's. Albert was born Albert Nelson in Indianola, Mississippi. This was the same location known as the birthplace of his namesake Riley (B.B.) King, and though the two were not related, Albert would sometimes claim that B.B. was his half-brother.

In 1952 B.B. King had his first major rhythm and blues hit with a version of "Three O'Clock Blues."

Congress declared 2003 the "Year of the Blues," commemorating the 100th anniversary of W.C. Handy's encounter with an unknown early bluesman at a train station in Mississippi.

In 1939 Eddie Durham records the first music featuring the electric guitar. The modern instrument, first developed by musician George Beauchamp and engineer Adolph Rickenbacher in the early 1930s, will help to transform the sound of the blues.

Referring to easy riders, who were cheating lovers, Ma Rainey's "See See Riders Blues," told the story of one of these easy cheating riders. The song has been covered many times and by the time the Animals covered the song in 1966 the title was shortened to "See See Rider". Mitch Ryder

  • visit http://www.bluestarconnection.org/ When you contact them let them know you are a CBS member. Volunteer Help: CBS is always looking for dedicated volunteers. We have a particular immediate need for anyone with GRANT-WRITING skills. Being a 501c3 non-profit we are always scrambling for money. Many of our programs could be expanded tremendously IF we had more funds. Government and Corporate Grants are out there BUT they are very time consuming to pursue and apply for. Anyone with experience in this area would be very valuable to this organization! We also are seeking individuals who would be interested in helping on our membership committee. If you like meeting people and like the idea of helping grow our membership ranks please contact us. Anyone interested in either area please contact Chick at [email protected] Be sure to check out Chris Rischards' Jam Post listings, where you will find info on some local blues jams. It is not a puiblication of the Colorado Blues Society. www.harmonicaplanet.com/jampost Thank you for supporting live blues music!
