Congratulations to the two newest RMD Barbershoppers of the Year! At the recent Fall Convention of the RMD, the Barbershopper of the Year (BOTY) was named for both 2016 and 2017. Those awarded this honor were Woody Woods, 2016, and Brett Foster, 2017.

In case you haven’t had the pleasure of knowing either, or both of these great men, here is a little about them. Woody Woods, has served the district in numerous ways over the years. He has been the Vice President of Marketing & PR, the VP

for Chorus Director Development, been the district webmaster, editor of the Vocal Expressions, Executive Vice President, District President and Immediate Past President. He is a Chorus Director with the Colorado Springs Metro Chapter. Within the Society itself, he is a certified Outstanding In Front (OIF) trainer, a PROBE Bulletin Judge, and a Contest Administrator, where he currently serves as the category specialist. Those who know Woody know that he is an avid quartet singer. He is also a proud member of AHSOW, willing to woodshed anytime and anywhere.

Brett Foster has served for many years as the Vice President of Chapter Support and Leadership Training (CSLT). In that capacity,

he has overseen the development of the Leadership Academies, and now COTS Plus (Chapter Operations Training Seminar). One ongoing program he has worked with is the Chapter Activity Recognition Award (CARA) by which chapters can judge their overall health. Within the last couple of years, Brett has founded the newest chartered chapter within the RMD, the Yellowstone Valley Chapter and Treasure State Chorus, where he currently serves as President. He is also an avid quartetter. Just this year Brett qualified as a Candidate Judge as a Contest Administrator, using his new skills for the first time in this year’s Fall Contest.

Whenever you see these two fine gentlemen, please congratulate them on the honor they have just received.

"How you can make sure your Youth Chorus Festival Spon-sorship donation gets into the right hands" ...

Neil Ridenour RMD Operations Team Financial Development

After our email, sent out a few days ago, with Bob Fox's

"every member" appeal to support RMD's commitment for the Youth Chorus Festival Sponsorship, Neil has had many inquiries as to "How do we make our donations?" Neil has submitted four easy options as follows:

Youth Chorus Festival Sponsorship – RMD

1. Chapter Donations – While this is an individual member

appeal, we also encourage chapters to participate if your board agrees. Make check out to Harmony Foundation and write RMD YCFS in the memo line. Bring to our Fall Convention next month and have your HOD representative provide to Neil Ridenour at the HOD meeting.

2. Individual’s Checks – Recommend they are collected at the chapter level, made out to Harmony Foundation and write RMD YCFS in the memo line.

a. Alternatively, if written to the chapter, the chapter can add this to their one check for this campaign.

b. Or, if preferred, they may be snail mailed (soon!) directly to Neil Ridenour for presentation at the Fall Convention. But, be sure they’re made out to Harmony Foundation and write RMD YCFS in the memo line. Be sure to include a note as to chapter affiliation with the check, example: CS Pikes Peak S-002.

Neil’s address is 8165 Brigantine Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80920-4405.

3. Cash – please collect at the chapter level, and follow steps in item 1 above.

4. Credit / Debit Card – Recommend the individual go to http://harmonyfoundation.org/ways-to-give/give-today/ and:

a. Select Single Gift b. In Designation area, select Other, do not select Unrestrict-

ed. c. In Designation area, enter in Comment box: "RMD YCFS" d. Complete all other necessary entries and submit; be sure

to retain your email receipt.

Ken Potter Director, Northwest Sound

Think inside the breath. Without breath, there is no vocal music. As you breathe, so shall you sing. If you breathe for your musical phrase, you shall sing musically. For within the breathe, there is musical life. And when you can breathe musically without thinking, you shall eliminate all distractions from your musicianship. Breathe because you wish to add life to the music. It requires much deeper thought.

Arkansas River Chorus Makes Impact in Pueblo By Wil Meiklejohn

Christmas Program Show Chairman

On a bright early December afternoon, the nine singers of the Arkansas River Chorus shared our “Christmas Gift to the Community.” For an hour we provided a program of music and a “Great Escape” from all the chaos and nega-tivity that saturates our senses nearly everywhere we turn.

Barbershop Christmas music was sung, seasonal se-lections provided by connections within our group, several members of nearby chapters shared their talents and the audience of nearly 100 people joined with us singing famil-iar Christmas carols. Volunteers served light refreshments following the show and tirelessly worked to assure that a very positive experience was in place. In addition, financial support from a number of patrons ($1,045), an offering taken at the program ($242.80), plus an anonymous matching gift, will enable us to share over $2,575 with local charitable organizations in order to help them provide food, gifts and outreach to those who otherwise might not enjoy a merry Christmas.

We realize how truly fortunate we are and celebrate the opportunity to give to our neighbors. It is, indeed, “more blessed to give than to receive.” Our hope is that we all may live in harmony and “let every heart prepare Him room.” Dear brothers in song, thank you for all your time, effort, energy, commitment, and love to make this come together and bring “Joy to the World.”

On July 1st, David F. Corley of the Pikes Peak chap-ter (S-002) in Colorado Springs, Colo., passed on. Dave was a 56-year member of the Society, a member of the Pikes Peak chapter for the last 18 years, and will be sorely missed. For many in our chapter, Dave was always upbeat, friendly and just a joy to know.

Dave’s legacy with the society is his love of singing and wanting to share that love with others through his di-recting of several choruses. He directed choruses in both Northern and Southern California and in Colorado. These included Downey, Pasadena, and Walnut Creek, Califor-nia, along with Colorado Springs. He also directed several Sweet Adeline choruses in California, including for North-ern Orange County and Diablo Vista (Walnut Creek).

Dave was a songwriter and arranger with at least one of his original songs copyrighted: the Rose Parade March © 1974 for the Pasadena Queens Show. In addition, Dave coached quartets, both men’s and women’s, and served the entire barbershop community as a judge in the Vocal Per-formance category. He also performed in at least three pro-ductions of The Music Man in California and four times in a musical version of Scrooge in Colorado.

For the last four years, Dave formed a mixed-voice chorus, 26 persons this past year, at the RV park in Ari-zona where he “snowbirded” during the winter. This group put on performances in January, February, and March and each show had different music from arrang-ers such as Rogers and Ham-merstein, Irving Berlin, Je-

rome Kern and George Gershwin. He worked those folks hard, but with great humor and love and they always had a full house for their performances. Plus, during the local talent shows, he and his spouse Naomi performed song and dance routines from musicals like Easter Parade and Royal Wedding, and they had a great response from the audience for their singing and comedy.

Dave Corley was a modest man who never put himself forward for recognition, but he literally touched thousands of lives through his love of singing. Many people are bet-ter singers because he spent time with them on improving their skills and lending a helping hand whenever it was needed. Dave was a great example of what each of us should strive to become as a barbershopper, both within our Society and in our interactions with our communities, wherever we may be, at any stage of life.

The Pikes Peak chapter, several chapters in California and the entire Barbershop Harmony Society are greatly diminished by his loss. However, we and many other bar-bershoppers are forever thankful for Dave’s interest in making us all better singers and his love of life that he shared with us through singing.

America the Beautiful Chorus Spring Show

June 10, 2017 by Jim Campbell

The America the Beautiful Cho-rus of the Colorado Springs Pikes Peak Chapter presented their Spring Show, “If I Could Write a Song,” on June 10 at the Sunrise Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. In addi-tion to performances by the chorus and two of the ATB quartets, Velcro and Odd Man Out, the show was memorable for the young people who were guest performers and really wowed the audience.

Our Special Guest Quartet was Vintage Mix, a mixed quartet made up of 16-year-old quadruplets from the Milwaukee, Wis. area. Fresh from an April appearance on Fox and Friends, and an earlier 2017 perfor-mance at the BHS Midwinter Conven-tion in San Antonio, Kelsey, Anika, Julia, and Ian performed a set of aca-pella tunes that included both Barber-shop and other styles. Their rendition of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” was a real crowd-pleaser in particular. They have been singing together since the fourth grade, but only began perform-ing Barbershop style about two years ago. They are one of the first quartets registered in the Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association.

Check out their website at www.vintagemixquartet.com

The ATB Chorus also welcomed

another youth quartet, Straight Up, to the stage. These four teenagers from different schools are all mem-bers of the Summit Ensemble of the Colorado Springs Childrens’ Chorale. Hunter, Hayden, D’Ante, and Sean brought the audience to their feet with a performance of a work song, “Tsotsholoza” (pronounced Show-Show-LOW-Zah), a song that is sung by miners working in the gold and diamond mines of South Africa.

Velcro, who recently appeared as the members of the River City School Board in a concert performance of Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man at Mesa Ridge High School in Fountain, Colorado, also brought a special guest. Naomi Mullins, a junior at Me-sa Ridge who played Marian the Li-brarian in that production, joined Vel-cro for a performance of “Lida Rose.”

The members of the America the Beautiful Chorus were thrilled to appear on stage with such a talented group of young people, who are proof positive that Barbershop singing real-ly brings generations and communi-ties together.

DOUBLE or TRIPLE YOUR IMPACT Donation Match Dollar for Dollar

Mitchell Family Challenge: For every dollar raised in new, current

donations, the gracious Mitchell family is willing to match up to $100,000! This is a time sensitive challenge, so if you have ever considered a gift to HFI, act quickly to double the impact of your investment.

Corporate Funds: Many companies have charitable gift matching programs

available to encourage philanthropy by their employees. Ask your employer about its interest in matching your gift to increase your impact.

Here is an early alert from Montrose President and Silverton SBHMF chairman, Larry Cooper, about the 2018 event so that all RMD Chapters will be current on information.

As you may know, the RMD attendance in Silverton last year was trending downward and Coop has some great ideas about how to build the numbers up to previous years. Part of his strategy is to increase the information out to all RMD Chapters earlier than in the past. Another is to schedule some serious coaching for all day Friday as well as Saturday. This is in the thinking process at this time.

To help increase the attendance, we are counting on you guys to get the ‘word out’ to our RMD Chapters so that every-one is aware of this historical gathering of barbershoppers in a beautiful Colorado mountain town to experience excellent coaching and fun performing.

If there is ONE guy we should contact with information, please let us know who he is so there is no confusing duplica-tion of efforts. Here is the early news for the 2018 Silverton Barbershop Harmony Festival (SBHMF).

It is scheduled for the first weekend in August, August 3 and 4. Tony Sparks, the mass chorus director for 2017 will return as our 2018 chorus director. More news and information will fol-low as soon as it is available. Thanks for your help.

Bill Sutton, [email protected] Communications VP

Our director, Amy Barrett, has indicated interest in the Durango barbershop chorus performing in Sil-verton (the annual Festival held late summer) this year. We always have some (most) of our members attending.

The Durango chapter is having their 50th annual show on June 9, 2018. We'll have two guest quartets, Blue Steele and Storm Front!
