We’re stoked for this summer, too, but our checklist looks a little bit di�erent.

9 Advocate for Zero Waste systems to help our customers reach their sustainability goals.

9 Update product packaging so people know we are a B Corp.

9 Continue to partner with composters seeking to grow their business by accepting front-of-house organics.

9 Launch new products to grow our bundle.

It’s a big list, but we got this.

We have a dedicated Sustainability Maven – and now Operator Specialists – on sta� who are targeting customers that are striving for Zero Waste, working to comply with new waste diversion regulations, or seeking other sustainability expertise. In addition to creating custom communication tools for our customers, our marketing team is busy developing even more resources to scale Zero Waste knowledge and communicating the fact that we are now third-party certified as being committed to using business as a force for good. A cross-functional team of leaders is working with commercial composters to help them successfully incorporate compostable packaging into their operations. Our product development team continues to be busy growing our product lines and creating brand new ideas for our customers who need something extra special.

BUNDLE: We’re big fans of a systems approach to waste diversion featuring a comprehensive line of consistently branded disposables. We make 400+ SKUs, and we’re continually developing new products to serve everything from apple fritters to zucchini tots.

• Made from renewable plant materials that can be grown again and again.

• All GreenStripe® products (except PSM Cutlery) are compostable, which means they can be returned to the soil to help plants grow.

• Compostable GreenStripe® products are ASTM compliant and BPI certified compostable in commercial facilities only, which may not exist in your area.

• Not made from oil like traditional plastics.

• Not suitable for backyard composting. These products need the high heat and careful management of a commercial pile to break down.

• Paper and sugarcane products can go in the freezer, although they are not airtight, so freshness and freezer burn can become issues if left there for too long. PLA can become brittle when frozen, so we don’t recommend putting these products in the freezer.

• Made from post-consumer recycled materials that have been used, recycled, and repurposed, meaning fewer virgin resources are required and less landfill waste is created.

• Making new products from recycled materials helps drive recycling markets and infrastructure.

• Plastic can become brittle when frozen, so we don’t recommend putting these products in the freezer.

• BlueStripe™ products incorporate the highest amount of post-consumer recycled material available without compromising performance.

Custom Product Development

Snooze needed a product for their take-out pancake flights. A flatbread pizza clamshell with a couple of tweaks did the trick - pancakes stay crisp and don’t get mushy in transit. They also opted to print the top with their signature orange, adding further distinction to their packaging.

If the cup design has just a few solid colors, using spot color is the simplest way to go. Colors match better, because the vendors use a specific color of ink rather than blending inks to build the colors. This is the only option when printing on our sugarcane or clear PLA products.

If the art has gradients, blends, shadows etc., or if it is made up of many colors like a photo, CMYK is the way to go. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black ink can be combined in di¦erent amounts to achieve millions of colors. This is the default method for our paper products because the minimums are lower and it is faster and less expensive.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation New Plastics Economy vision for a more sustainable approach to plastics includes compostable packaging for food contact applications. https://newplasticseconomy.org/report-2017

BioCycle published an article that quantified food scraps diverted through the use of compostable packaging. Composters got 72% more food when operators used compostable foodservice packaging. https://www.biocycle.net/2016/08/15/compostable-products-postconsumer-food-scraps/

According to the SPC’s “The Value of Compostable Packaging” report, by using compostable packaging at Farm Aid 2016, the festival organizers:

1. Kept more than 19,000 pounds of food out of the landfill.

2. Prevented the release of more than 14,000 pounds of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.

3. Increased food scraps collection by an incredible 122%!

We have long believed in and advocated for the role compostable packaging can play in diverting food scraps from landfills. With compostable packaging, the concert goer, baseball fan, or restaurant customer doesn’t have to sort their uneaten sandwich crust from their plate. Putting everything in one bin makes life easer for them...and the composter. Recently, a number of reports have highlighted the potential that composting and compostable packaging can play in waste diversion.

COMPOSTING GUIDE

What is composting anyway?• Composting: Nature’s way of breaking down and recycling materials. The process involves

microorganisms decomposing organic matter to produce carbon dioxide, water, heat, and compost. Finished compost has valuable nutrients for enhancing the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of soil.

• Items that can be composted include yard trimmings, fruit and vegetable scraps, dairy and meat, paper products, and other certi�ed compostable products such as plastic made from corn.

What’s so cool about it?• Reduces material sent to land�lls

• Creates valuable soil amendments: Compost supplies nutrients essential to plant growth, such as nitrogen, and creates good soil structure, preventing erosion. This can greatly reduce the environmental impacts of agriculture and landscaping through less irrigation and fertilizer use.

• Greenhouse gas reduction - When organic material goes to land�lls, it breaks down in an anaerobic (i.e., oxygen-free) environment, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas over 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Composting keeps much of the materials’ carbon in the soil, thereby greatly reducing its impact on climate change.

What can you compost?Pre-Consumer: Food scraps from kitchens and prep areas. This also includes prepared, unserved, and non-reusable or non-donateable food (post production, but before the consumer). Post-Consumer: Left-over food not eaten by consumers and certi�ed compostable foodservice products such as cup, cutlery and food-soiled paper.

What’s happens to it?• Organic material can be hauled away and composted by a commercial composter. The facility will

turn the feedstock material into compost, a valuable soil ammendment.

HOW DO I COMPOST?Building Infrastructure

1. Determine the �ow of food scraps from wherever they are generated to their ultimate destination at your facilities.

2. Set up buckets or bins to collect organic scraps as necessary. Depending on the size of the space, you may have smaller receptacles where the scraps are generated, a larger receptacle inside to centralize collection, then a compactor or large receptacle out back that will be provided and serviced by the hauler. Certi�ed compostable liners can help keep bins clean and minimize washing.

2. Determine how it will be collected, and how it will ultimately end up in the receptacle serviced by the hauler. This can include bin stations in public areas, or back-of-house operations that collect the leftovers from consumers who left food on their plate.

3. Place compostable collection bins next to existing recycling and trash bins. This can greatly decrease the chance of contamination, as consumers with multiple waste streams are not likely to seek out separate bins in separate locations. Bin messaging depicting images of the exact products used on-site is critical.

What about Bins?

There are many di�erent bin systems on the market. It can be as simple as repurposing/labeling bins you already have. You can also purchase multi-bin systems that have compartments for each stream. We recommend

picking a system you can use consistently throughout your buildings and grounds, , preferably with color-coding for each material stream, so people know what to do wherever they are.

3. Build Infrastructure

Pre-Consumer (“Back-of-the-House”) Post-Consumer (“Front-of-the-House”)

There are two areas and groups that you need to consider when setting up composting - Pre-Consumer “back-of-the-house” and the Post-Consumer “front-of-the-house.” Post-Consumer is typically more complex than pre-consumer composting, given involvement by untrained consumers (and there are way more consumers than employees to train) and increased opportunities for contamination.

2017 was a year of great progress on the path towards our Zero Waste future. We helped create front-of-house waste diversion success stories from coast to coast, expanding our growing list of case studies in which venues and operators are using our products to dramatically decrease the waste that they send to landfills. Achieving a working Zero Waste system in a foodservice operation is no longer simply for those in Seattle, San Francisco, or Vermont. We are seeing traction in Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, and Colorado, just to name a few. Most impressively, we consistently see that once a conversation has begun around organics diversion from landfills, a broader discussion ensues around a range of sustainability initiatives

such as climate change and food insecurity, and we are proud to be on the forefront of that exchange of ideas.

Why do we have a Sustainability Report?At Eco-Products, sustainability is not a marketing gimmick or a stand-alone initiative. It’s at the heart of who we are. Our strategic objective is to advance our position as a leader in sustainability and Zero Waste, through a reimagined approach to foodservice packaging.

We publish this report because we don't feel right about calling ourselves “a green company that happens to operate in disposables” unless we publicize our social, environmental, and operational performance.

We love music almost as much as we love waste diversion. A top contender for “coolest place on Earth to see live music” is Town Park in Telluride, Colorado – home to Planet Bluegrass’ Telluride Bluegrass Festival (TBF). Eco-Products has long been a partner to Planet Bluegrass, a true pioneer at the nexus of sustainability and live music events. Festival-wide composting? They have been at it in Telluride since 2003. Since all vendors and caterers at TBF use BPI-certified compostable foodservice packaging, “festivarians” can simply put their compostable ware and any uneaten food scraps in the same bin. This easy approach, which includes friendly waste station volunteers, allows festival-goers to enjoy the fiddles and mandolins as much as possible. As cool as the bin signage is, no one wants to read confusing instructions when you’re surrounded by all that natural beauty and soul-uplifting music. Easy = a better festival for all, including the composter since contamination (i.e., non-compostable stu¦) is minimized. As a result of Planet Bluegrass’ thoughtful approach, in 2017, 61% of materials generated at the festival was diverted from the landfill, and 33% was composted, turned into soil, and returned to the Earth. The final frontier is reducing waste in the four festival campgrounds. Since Planet Bluegrass does not control what 3,600 festivarians bring in their cars to the festival grounds, non-compostable items are bound to be found on-site. However, Planet Bluegrass is expanding their e¦orts to educate campers in advance, and incentivize camping best practices at the festival since many would love to do the right thing. Sometimes we all just need a little nudge. It’s this level of commitment to sustainability that make Planet Bluegrass a kindred spirit in Zero Waste, and an organization with which we are proud to partner.
