Fluorescents with cool pastels

This year brands apply fluorescent accents to cool greys and/or pastels for a modern play onneon.

Scholten & Baijings collaborates with Mini to present the Colour One project. Small details of neonorange, yellow and pink is applied to car-parts to accentuate design. In certain areas a narrow ombré linemerges the neon colour into matt grey tones.

Society moves away from its iconic dusty pastel colour range and presents textiles in a sharp white andfluorescent palette. Clean white is worked in large proportions, with trimmings and details in neon yellowand pink.

Coral to red tones


Coral to red tones are the colour range of the moment. Shades vary from crushed raspberry orcoral to pillar box red, with almost every shade inbetween.

Swedese presents a new unique colour scheme where a range of red shades are worked together withinone setting for impact. The chair and sofa are upholstered in bright red with a contrasting orange-cast redthrow and a warmer dark red rug beneath. This tonal styling provides a surprising composition and astunning result. SCP and zeljka Kavran’s wood furniture pieces are displayed in solid bright red, with analmost fluorescent look.

Bold brights


A bold bright colour direction is taken on by many brands. Orange, bubble gum pink, coral andgrey prevent the palette from becoming overly primary and instead becomes reminiscent of aPostmodern palette.

Pale blue and sharp green also make the palette feel new. White accents or backdrops encourage thecolour scheme to feel fresh and contemporary. Artek presents the classic Stool 60 in a range of stunningnew colour-blocked variations, in a gloss paint finish.

Blue/grey tones


At this year's Milan Design Week, we see a shift from the recently popular grey tones, as brandsmove towards the blue range of the spectrum.

Blue/grey is a popular choice for upholstery, often worked within a minimalist arrangement of tonalshades, resulting in an ultra-contemporary look, brought to the forefront by Doshi Levien for Moroso atthe Salone del Mobile.

Blue/grey tones are also seen mixed with browns, mid-sage green and orange for a retro approach.

Pebble

Although white and black remain failsafe choices, pebble beige is also an important neutral for kitchendecor. This shade of grey-brown is ideal as a base for accent brights or to mix with marble and stonecountertops, and is even used for hob bases at Hotpoint.

Blue

Preferably used on upholstered piece, calming shades of mid-tone blue feature as a neutraloption, working well with either smooth surfaces or detailed fabrications. Vibrancy shifts up a notch withan almost turquoise tone used in combination with clean lines and ultra-modern designs.

Green

A variety of green tones emerge, ranging from citrus lime to chalky pastel. Outdoor and contract furnitureare the categories that better explore the use of this colour.

Previously spotted as a major colour trend in home accessories trade shows, such as Maison & Objet2012 and Ambiente 2012, ombré finally appears on larger lighting and furniture items in Milan. Yellow


As we predicted in our yellow colour analysis, yellow makes a big appearance this year, seenacross all product categories at Milan Design week 2012.

Used solely for a single item or playing a key part in a tempered mid-tone or bold bright colour palette.Also paired with ecru, greys and khaki neutrals. Diesel accessorises its yellow Cloudscape armchair withwashed indigo cushions.

For furniture, yellow plays an important part for collections, used as a bold highlight against unfinished,lime washed or white painted wood.

Molo Design collaborates with sound artist Ethan Rose to form a multi-sensory paper installation 'PaperMusic’. Built from vibrant yellow honeycombed paper walls, visitors are encouraged to brush theirfingers across the walls whilst listening to Rose’s tearing, ripping and crunching paper sounds.

Top three colour concepts


Here we take a look at the top three colour concepts and inspiring colour palettes offered bybrands at this year's Milan design week 2012.

La Chance

La Chance debuts at Milan design week 2012 with Jekyll and Hyde. This collection reflects theequal importance of two contrasting colour palettes - a black and white monotone palette workedagainst bright, bold colour ranges.

The brand caters for two diverse tastes of the market by showcasing the same furniture and lightingcollections in two colour stories. The display is split into two. On one side, Hyde presents pieces in brightbold colours, and on the other side of the stand, Jekyll uses only monochromatic tones.

Co-founder of the brand Jean-Baptiste Souletie explains why they are offering customers more colouroptions: “We see two potential audiences for luxury furniture. There are the design enthusiasts, whowant uncompromising pieces in bold colours, then there are people who love contemporary design butprefer more muted tones. We’re saying to consumers: choose your personality.”

Scholten & Baijings for 1616 Arita

Japanese porcelain manufacturer 1616 Arita commissioned Scholten & Baijings to design aporcelain dinner service. Undertaking research into traditional colours of ancient Japaneseporcelain, Scholten & Baijings introduced aquarelle blue, light green, red-orange and ochre intothe series.

The Colour Porcelain series is divided into three mini collections: Minimal, Colourful and Extraordinary.Each collection differs in proportions of colour and pattern.

Colour Porcelain delicately plays with soft pastels and accents of solid orange/red and sherbet yellow.Colours are used on there own or layered to create light ombrés against the naturally grey-tintedporcelain. This unique colour range invites new interesting compositions where combinations andintensities of colour can continually vary.

Marni

Marni presents L’arte del Ritratto at Salone del Mobile 2012, a series of 100 chairs produced byex-prisoners from Colombia. The project was initiated by Marni in an effort to support the socialand working lives of ex-prisoners. Multi-coloured PVC threads are woven around the metal chairframes, creating intricate weave structures.

Marni has adapted the stunning colour combinations initiated by the prisoners and formed an originalpalette. Each chair reveals a completely original design and colour story.

Tempered mid-tones


Sweet pastels from previous seasons are replaced by diluted mid-tones. Colour tinted neutralshave delicate hints of nude, blush and lavender, and are enhanced with more saturated accentsof dusty grey/ blue, sea green, coral and raspberry.

Jaime Hayon practices a tempered down mid-tone theme with a carefully selected ensemble of off-white,mink and sea greens, with stronger highlights of red brick and jade.

Orange


This year we see an abundance of hot fiery oranges from burnt rusts to zingy tangerines.This wasmostly evident at the Salone del Mobile where orange was a popular choice for upholsteredfurniture pieces.

At Fuorisalone, Hermès' signature colour is on trend, and at MOST, Luca Nichetto's entire contractfurniture collection for MG Lab is upholstered in a range of hot oranges. Nichetto’s concrete deskobjects, Swell, for Petite Friture is also presented in orange and yellow hues.

Werner Aisslinger launches musicbox, its innovative audio living room furniture, in one solid shade oforange paired with a tobacco floor covering creating a retro 1970s feel.

Tacchni present the Sancarlo armchair upholstered to form a warm coloured ombré. Arper present Saya,a sleek chair in a stunning range of colours. Each wooden chair is naturally stained in white, ochre andthree varying intensities of red.

Fluorescents with cool pastels


This year brands apply fluorescent accents to cool greys and/or pastels for a modern play onneon.

Scholten & Baijings collaborates with Mini to present the Colour One project. Small details of neonorange, yellow and pink is applied to car-parts to accentuate design. In certain areas a narrow ombré linemerges the neon colour into matt grey tones.

Society moves away from its iconic dusty pastel colour range and presents textiles in a sharp white andfluorescent palette. Clean white is worked in large proportions, with trimmings and details in neon yellowand pink.
