Celebrate the Journey to ChristmasTHE POSADA is a traditional Advent celebration brought tothe New World by 16th-century missionaries. It is a prayer, playand party all in one that reenacts Joseph and Mary’s search foran “inn” or “shelter” (Spanish: “posada”). The Knights ofColumbus has prepared a new booklet on how to host a Posada.Download Journey to the Inn: An Advent Celebration (#9898) atkofc.org/posada or request the booklet by mail through theOrder’s Supply Department.

FOR DECADES, much has been saidabout the increasing secularization andcommercialization of Christmas, andrightly so. After all, amid the lack of re-ligious symbols and the accelerated paceof the “shopping season,” it can be easyfor people to forget what holiday we areactually celebrating. But this year, amedia-contrived controversy has fo-cused public discussion about the “Waron Christmas” on something as inane asa red coffee cup. If we want to celebratethe birth of Jesus with open hearts, wemight reflect on what is truly meant bythe phrase “Keep Christ in Christmas.”First of all, we know that Christmas

begins, rather than ends, on Dec. 25, andthe Church’s liturgy provides a blueprintto help us to prepare spiritually. Indeed, the season of Advent (this year Nov. 29-Dec. 24) is a penitential season and atime of interior preparation, similar toLent, as reflected in the purple vestmentsworn by priests. The hymns and OldTestament readings of Advent liturgiesreflect a longing for the coming of theMessiah promised by God. As withLent, Advent is a time in which we areencouraged to practice prayer, fastingand almsgiving; to receive the sacramentof reconciliation; and to reflect in a spe-cial way on our need for a Savior. In contrast to the hustle and bustle

around us, the Church presents Adventas a time of silence, waiting and conver-sion. Like Lent, this season includes fes-tive days as well, including theSolemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion (Dec. 8), the feast of Our Lady ofGuadalupe (Dec. 12) and Gaudete Sun-

day (Third Sunday of Advent), provid-ing occasions for holiday gatherings. This year, the Advent season is a par-

ticularly special time, since the Extraor-dinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, which hasbeen called for by Pope Francis, beginsDec. 8 (see page 8). The Holy Father hasurged us to contemplate God’s mercy, toexamine our own need to show patienceand forgiveness to others, and to practicethe spiritual and corporal works ofmercy during this special year of grace.Pope Francis has also expressed his desirethat people experience “an oasis ofmercy” in “our parishes, communities, associations and movements” — a chal-lenge that has special relevance for theKnights of Columbus, especially as thesupreme knight is setting a new coursefor the Order, emphasizing greater inte-gration with parish life (see page 3).So, as we begin the Holy Year of

Mercy and a new chapter in the historyof the Knights, our Advent waitingtakes on even more significance. Weknow that the campaign to KeepChrist in Christmas is about more thanensuring that religious symbols andgreetings are reflected in our society, asmeaningful as these expressions are.Rather, keeping Christ in Christmasbegins in our own hearts, and extendsto those around us, especially in ourhomes and parishes. In this way, we arecalled to receive and show the mercy ofGod, anticipating and making presentChrist’s kingdom on earth.♦

Our Mission to Build theDomestic Church andStrengthen Parish Life

Through a new Orderwide initiative, the Knightswill better serve Catholic families and the Church

by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

On Nov. 20, I delivered the followingaddress at the Order’s midyear organi-zational meeting of state deputies inSan Antonio. I encourage all brotherKnights to read and reflect on these re-marks, in which I outline key principlesfor the future growth and work of theKnights of Columbus.

IN HIS APOSTOLIC exhortationEvangelium Gaudium (The Joy of theGospel), Pope Francis called for a newmissionary spirit among Catholics.“By her very nature the Church ismissionary,” the pope wrote. “Sheabounds in effective charity and acompassion that understands, assistsand promotes” (179). This challengehas special resonance for Knights ofColumbus, especially throughoutNorth America, where we have bene-fited in so many ways from the sacri-fice of countless missionaries. The great Catholic institutions of

our country were built by men andwomen filled with a great missionaryspirit. Although Father Michael McGivney would probably not havedescribed himself as a missionary, throughout his lifetime the UnitedStates remained “mission” territory inthe eyes of the Vatican. In this regard, we remember the

words of Pope Benedict XVI duringhis 2008 visit to the United Stateswhen he named Father McGivney asan example of the missionary spirit

that built the Catholic Church inAmerica. On that occasion, Pope Benedict

urged Catholics in America to “movetogether toward that true spiritual re-newal desired by the [Second Vatican]Council, a renewal which can onlystrengthen the Church in that holi-ness and unity indispensable for theeffective proclamation of the Gospelin today’s world.”The pope continued, “Was not this

unity of vision and purpose — rootedin faith and a spirit of constant con-version and self-sacrifice — the secretof the impressive growth of theChurch in this country? We need butthink of the remarkable accomplish-ment of that exemplary Americanpriest, the Venerable Michael Mc-Givney, whose vision and zeal led tothe establishment of the Knights ofColumbus.”This missionary spirit has been the

lifeblood of the Knights of Columbus. How else can we account for the factthat within four decades of its found-ing, our Order had spread across theUnited States and Canada and hadbegun activities in the Philippines,Mexico and Cuba? That same missionary spirit led the

Order to establish a network of facili-ties throughout Europe during theFirst World War to serve countlessmembers of the American and Cana-dian military. And then after the

Great War to open athletic facilities inRome to serve and help evangelize theyouth of that city — a work that con-tinues to this day.We see that same missionary spirit

today as the Order begins activities inPoland, Ukraine, Lithuania andKorea, and as our charitable programschange thousands of lives for the bet-ter in places like Haiti, Uganda, Viet-nam and Iraq. This missionary spirit has been a

constant dynamic throughout our his-tory. It has always encouraged us toseek new challenges and to adapt tonew situations — and to do so alwaysin faithful service responding to theneeds of our Church.

THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCILFollowing the Second Vatican Coun-cil, it became clear that the vitality ofour parishes and of our Catholic fam-ilies was being tested as never before.Thousands of priests and religious lefttheir ministries, and vocations to thepriesthood and religious life plum-meted. The widespread scourges ofno-fault divorce, cohabitation outsideof marriage, single-parent families andabortion made Catholic family life ap-pear at times as the new “terra incog-nita.” At the same time, the SecondVatican Council called upon the laityto assume a greater role in meetingthese challenges.

BUILDING A BETTER WORLD

The Knights of Columbus re-sponded with dramatic new initiativesto better meet the needs of our fami-lies and our parishes. For example, we initiated one of the

largest vocations programs in history.Through our Refund Support Voca-tions Program and scholarships, wehave provided more than $68 millionto more than 115,000 men andwomen pursuing vocations. We also began a shift away from es-

tablishing local councils dependentupon home association facilities. In-stead, we promoted the establishmentof parish-based councils aligned withFather McGivney’s originalvision for the Order. And we began to encourage

a greater focus on programsthat would include more fam-ily members in our activitiesand would more directly sup-port Catholic family life. The result has been a

tremendous success. Thisshift has opened the door tothousands of new councilsthat could not have taken onthe financial burden of building orpurchasing a meeting hall. At thesame time, this shift opened the doorof membership to hundreds of thou-sands of new brother Knights.Similarly, many of the thousands of

priests we have helped financially arenow brother Knights who proudlyserve as our council chaplains. And this shift has done even more.

It has led to the extraordinary growthof the Knights of Columbus in thecharity we provide our neighbors —literally hundreds of millions of dol-lars and hundreds of millions of vol-unteer service hours.Active Knights of Columbus coun-

cils are bringing our principles ofcharity, unity and fraternity, as well asour energy and activities, to enlivenand strengthen thousands of parishes.During this same time the Knights

of Columbus sharpened its mission tobetter support Catholic family life.

This was always one of the core mis-sions of the Order envisioned by Fa-ther McGivney. It was the reason theOrder developed fraternal benefits tosupport widows and orphans. It led tothe establishment of thousands ofyouth and family activities, to our sup-port of parish-based Catholic schools, and to developing our spiritual andcatechetical programs directed to fam-ilies, such as our Catholic InformationService, our Pilgrim Virgin Icon pro-gram and Fathers for Good.More recently, the Order has imple-

mented a new program that brings to-gether both our support of parishes

and our support of families. It is titledBuilding the Domestic Church: TheFamily Fully Alive. Already, manythousands of local Knights of Colum-bus councils and families have begunparticipating in this program.

LOOKING TO THE FUTUREIn its 2012 document titled DisciplesCalled to Witness, the U.S. Conferenceof Catholic Bishops made clear theconnection between the parish andthe family in the new evangelization.Regarding parish life, the bishops’

document stated, “It is the responsi-bility of both pastors and laity to en-sure that [the doors of the parish] arealways open. Evangelization must re-main rooted in the parish. It is in theparish that one becomes engaged withthe Church community, learns how tobecome a disciple of Christ, is nur-tured by Scripture, is nourished by thesacraments, and ultimately becomes

an evangelizer. Successful evangeliza-tion and catechetical initiatives mustbe focused on the parish.”The document then went on to say

this about the family’s role: “A cultureof witness is sustained within theChurch through marriage and thefamily. … It is within the Sacramentof Matrimony that the husband andwife evangelize, become evangelized, and share their witness of the faith totheir children and to society.”It further noted, “The family,

called the domestic Church, is oftenthe first place where one experiencesand is formed in the faith.” And it

concluded by quoting PopeBenedict XVI’s 2011 ad-dress to the PontificalCouncil for the Family that“the new evangelization de-pends largely on the domes-tic Church.”Thus we see a providential

convergence of three initia-tives of the Knights ofColumbus: the developmentof thousands of new parish-based councils; new pro-

grams to strengthen family life, allleading to a deeper understanding ofthe family as domestic church; andour increasing commitment to servethe Church’s mission of a new evan-gelization through the parish.Indeed, each of these three initia-

tives points to the Knights of Colum-bus as the organization best situatedto enliven and strengthen parish life.We are truly positioned today to moveto a new level of service as the strongright arm of our parish churches. Now the time has come for us to ac-

celerate these initiatives as they affectour work in parishes and our work tostrengthen Christian family life. The family as domestic church is

central to both the work of the newevangelization and to the future sus-tainability of our parishes — as wellas the future sustainability of theOrder. But the Catholic family cannotperform this important mission on its

own. The reason is simple: As BlessedPaul VI observed, the family can onlytruly be a domestic church when itsdaily life “mirrors the various aspectsof the entire Church.” And for this tobecome a reality, the family must bemore fully integrated into the sacra-mental life of the parish.Knights of Columbus parish-basedcouncils today are not only places thatprovide invaluable support to parishlife in terms of charitable and socialactivities. They are a primary place tosupport the evangelization of familylife through the mission of the domes-tic church. Our councils can do this bymore fully integrating families into thelife of the parish through the many pro-grams of our parish-based councils. If we do this, then we will continuethe legacy of Father McGivney — alegacy which, as Pope Benedict ob-served, was to promote spiritual re-newal among Catholics bystrengthening them in holiness andunity. And as a parish priest, FatherMcGivney saw that this renewal couldbe assisted in powerful ways in theparish by the new organization he hadestablished.

THE RENEWAL OFPARISH AND FAMILY LIFE Today, we are determined to continuethis work of renewal and unity. In thisway, we will also realize the missionthat St. John Paul II identified in Ec-clesia in America: “The renewal of theChurch in America will not be possi-ble without the active presence of thelaity. Therefore they are largely re-sponsible for the future of theChurch” (44).The pastoral visit of Pope Francis tothe United States and his attendanceat the World Meeting of Families inPhiladelphia present a historic oppor-tunity for Catholics throughout theworld — and especially for Catholicsin North America.During the World Meeting ofFamilies, Pope Francis called for anew alliance between the Church

and the family in order that Catholicfamilies might receive greater encour-agement and support. “May God grant us this gift of a re-newed closeness between the familyand the Church,” the pope said.“Families need it, the Church needsit, and we pastors need it.”But for millions of Catholic fami-lies, this new alliance will become a re-ality only if they can find this greatersupport within their local parish. There is no Catholic organization bet-ter positioned for this task today inthousands of parishes than the Knightsof Columbus.Today, the Knights of Columbus is

providentially positioned to play a keyrole in the new alliance between theChurch and the family called for byPope Francis. But for us to do so re-quires that we adopt new methods. We must devote even greater effortsto our fundamental mission of charity, unity and fraternity, and we must doso with even greater attention to theneeds and the future of our parishesand our families. What is necessarynow is our greater involvement in therenewal of parish and family life. To meet this need we will have todo some things differently. Our coun-cils will have to become even more ac-tive in our parish communities. Wewill have to stop duplicating activitiesthat are more appropriately done byand through the parish. We will haveto focus more on programs that sup-port Catholic families in their missionas a domestic church. For many councils, doing thesethings will require making choices be-tween what is good and what is better.Often they may have to choose be-tween what our Catholic communitymay have needed in the past and whatit needs today and in the future.

A NEW K OF C INITIATIVE Therefore, I am announcing a newOrderwide initiative to strengthenboth our parishes and our families. Itis titled Building the Domestic Church

While Strengthening Our Parish. Thisnew initiative builds upon our pastprograms and accomplishments. Atthe same time, it requires that we dosome things differently in the future.First, this initiative requires that weaccelerate the process of moving awayfrom the home association system andmoving toward more parish-basedcouncils. We should no longer expendvaluable resources supporting homeassociations whose activities are out-side the mission of the Knights ofColumbus or of the Church. The deployment of our resourcesshould be made on the basis of mis-sion integrity with our core principlesof charity, unity and fraternity. Somehome associations, for example, served important social purposes inthe past, such as hosting receptionsand parties, as well as degree cere-monies and business meetings. How-ever, because of the need to generatea constant stream of revenue just tomaintain their buildings, many homeassociations have been forced into thefacilities rental business, in whichthey are now subject to market forces, government regulations, and liabilityrisks. Needless to say, this situationhas diluted the mission integrity ofthe councils that use those buildings. These home associations may, attimes, actually impede the work ofthe Order. For this reason, I am asking everycouncil using facilities owned by ahome association to undertake a seri-ous assessment of how that relation-ship supports the council in itsfulfillment of the core mission of theKnights of Columbus. And everycouncil using facilities owned by ahome association should, as soon aspracticable, enter into the contractualagreements required in a resolutionadopted by the Supreme Council atits convention in 2014.Second, our Building the DomesticChurch While Strengthening OurParish initiative requires that ourparish-based councils move toward

BUILDING A BETTER WORLD

greater integration into the life of ourparishes. Councils should begin to phase out

the duplication of programs that maycompete with parish activities. In-stead, we will use our resources oftime, talent and money to strengthenparish-based and parish-sponsoredprograms.One important area where this will

occur is youth-based parish ministry.Perhaps more than at any other time, our youth are in need of greater evan-gelization, catechesis and pastoralcare. This pastoral care must takeplace within the parish and at the di-rection and supervision of itspastor. Today our youth needmore not less involvement inthe life of their parish. There is no better organiza-

tion today in so manyparishes than the Knights ofColumbus to assist our pas-tors in this responsibility.Councils should seek ways towork more closely withparish-based youth ministryprograms. And councilsshould also seek new ways to supportthe activities of parish-based schools. The Board of Directors has thus de-

cided that as part of this new initiative, local units of the Knights of Colum-bus will no longer sponsor Boy Scouttroops. Councils should move to endsponsorship as soon as practically pos-sible — in many cases by the end of2015 and in no case later than 2016.Instead, local units should encour-

age troops that they presently sponsorto become parish-sponsored troops.Such new parish-sponsored Boy Scouttroops can and should receive the vol-unteer and financial support of localcouncils. But the key change is thatthe mission and activity of scoutingwill be more properly integrated intoa comprehensive strategy of theparish’s youth ministry under the di-rection of the pastor. After consider-able deliberation, we believe that thisis the best way to provide for the fu-

ture sustainability of an authenticCatholic scouting program and of theCatholic identity of the young menwho participate in it.Additionally, councils should seek

to more closely integrate the activitiesof Squires circles and their otheryouth activities within the youth min-istry goals of the parish. Councils andassemblies in the United States andCanada that do not presently sponsorSquires Circles are encouraged not toinstitute new circles. Instead, theselocal units are encouraged to supportexisting parish-based youth ministryprograms. In parishes where youth

ministry programs can be improved, councils should work with their chap-lain and pastor to find ways to beginnew or more effective parish-basedyouth programs. In the future, youth activities of the

Order should be measured by howthey assist the overall goals of parishyouth ministry programs and howwell they are incorporated within ourBuilding the Domestic Church WhileStrengthening Our Parish program. As we move forward we will incorpo-rate many existing programs into thisinitiative.During this fraternal year, councils

that formulate their activitiesthrough the Surge with Service Pro-gram should give priority within theFamily Activity category to those ac-tivities related to our Building theDomestic Church program; theyshould give priority within theChurch Activity category to those

programs which more fully integratetheir council’s activities within thelife of their parish; and they shouldgive priority within the Youth Activ-ity category to those programs whichstrengthen or support parish-basedyouth ministry. They should alsoconsider how their activities in thecategories of council, Communityand Culture of Life may be enhancedthrough greater participation by thewider parish community.

THE NEW EVANGELIZATION When St. John Paul II spoke of thenew evangelization he explained that

the content of evangelizationwould not be new, but thatthis would be an evangeliza-tion “new in its ardor, meth-ods and expression.” This is this same dynamic

that guides our missiontoday. The “content” of theKnights of Columbus hasnot changed. We are aCatholic brotherhood basedupon the principles of char-ity, unity, fraternity and pa-

triotism. We are dedicated to faithfuland unparalleled service to theChurch. But what will change is the“expression” of that service so that ourwork may become even more relevantand effective. The changes outlined here may be

difficult for some. Change is nevereasy. But the proven record of the pasthalf century is clear: The closer theKnights of Columbus becomes toparish life, the closer we work withour parish priests, and the more wesupport Catholic families, the moreour Order grows in membership andcharity. The challenge of effective leader-

ship is to lead change, not to be led bychange. The leadership of the Knightsof Columbus has always succeeded inleading change. And this is what I amconfident you and I will succeed indoing in the days ahead.

Vivat Jesus!

The ‘content’ of the Knights ofColumbus has not changed.

What will change is the ‘expression’ of that service so

that our work may become evenmore relevant and effective.

In reCOGnITIOn of his “outstanding achievements incharitable activities” and for his “contributions to promot-ing the legacy of John Paul II,” Supreme Knight Carl A.Anderson was honored by the Polish government with theOfficer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the republic ofPoland.

The award, one of the first honors authorized by the re-cently elected Polish President Andrzej Duda, was conferredOct. 16 at the embassy of Poland in washington, D.C.

“There is no nation — other than my own — that is moremeaningful to me from which to receive such an honor thanPoland. It touches me deeply, and I am very grateful,”Supreme Knight Anderson said in his acceptance remarks.

In a letter read at the award ceremony, Polish Ambassa-dor ryszard Schnepf praised the supreme knight’s leader-ship in developing the Saint John Paul II national Shrine, which operates under the Knights of Columbus. Theshrine, the ambassador said, “is a living monument dedi-cated to the life of the pope” who “was able to change theworld” by helping to bring down communist rule in east-ern europe and liberate Poland.

In remarks during the event, Bishop Janusz Stepnowskiof Łomża, Poland, congratulated the supreme knight forreceiving the honor. A member of the Bł. Ks. of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday),Pope Francis published a letter aboutthe holy year titled Misericor-diae Vultus (The Face ofMercy). In the first words ofthe document, the Holy Fa-ther invites us to look uponthe face of the Lord Jesus asthe face of God’s mercy. It isJesus of Nazareth, God’s eter-nal Son, born of Mary, whohas revealed the Father’smercy to us “by his words, his ac-tions, and his entire person” (1).Pope Francis also invites us to con-

template God’s mercy “as the wellspringof joy, serenity, and peace,” callingmercy “the ultimate and supreme act bywhich God comes to meet us” (2).Mercy is “the fundamental law thatdwells in the heart of every person wholooks sincerely into the eyes of hisbrothers and sisters on the path of life”and “the bridge that connects God andman, opening our hearts to a hope ofbeing loved forever despite our sinful-ness” (ibid.). With these moving words, the pope brings us to the heart of theGospel, namely, that Jesus Christ is therevelation of the Father’s merciful love.

MERCY AND CHARITYLike his predecessors, St. John Paul IIand Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francisdoes not present God’s mercy as merelya soothing ointment designed to make usfeel better about our sins while still livingin them. Rather, mercy is God’s way ofreaching out to us, offering us a newchance to look at ourselves, to convert,to believe. Mercy is also the foundationof the Church’s life — God’s mercy iswhat the Church preaches; what the

Church dispenses in the Mass and thesacraments; and what the Church prac-tices in works of charity, healing and ed-ucation. In a world that all too oftenchooses violence and severity over mercy,we are all called to be authentic signs —and, indeed, missionaries — of the Fa-ther’s mercy. Pope Francis has thus cho-sen the “motto” of this holy year as:Merciful like the Father (14).In Misericordiae Vultus, Pope Francis

recalled the words of St. John XXIII atthe opening of the Second VaticanCouncil when he said that the Churchpreferred “the medicine of mercy” to“the arms of severity.” Even more to thepoint, he noted what Blessed Pope Paul VI said when he closed the council

in December 1965: “We prefer to pointout how charity has been the principalreligious feature of this Council ... theold story of the Good Samaritan hasbeen the model of the spirituality of theCouncil” (4). Pope Francis also recalledthat St. John Paul II, in his encyclicalDives in Misericordia (Rich in Mercy),

observed that we always experi-ence God’s love — his charity —as mercy. The pope’s challenge, then, is

for all of us to be practitioners ofmercy, not only by contributingto charitable efforts, but also inour personal lives. “Love, afterall, cannot be an abstraction,” hewrote. “By its very nature, it in-

dicates something concrete: inten-tions, attitudes, and behaviors that areshown in daily living” (9).

THE SACRAMENT OF MERCYIt is easy to see how this special holy yearis tailor-made for the Knights of Colum-bus family, whose first principle is char-ity. Following the lead and inspiration ofour founder, Father Michael McGivney, the charity that the Order puts intopractice is a matter of serving one’sneighbor and finds its source in God’smercy. Whether it’s reaching out to abrother Knight and his family in timesof trouble, aiding in disaster relief efforts, providing wheelchairs to people withdisabilities, distributing winter coats or

but also in our personal lives.

scholarships, or advancing the protec-tion of unborn life through ultrasoundmachines, the charity of the Knights ofColumbus seeks to restore and affirmour wounded human dignity. Furthermore, our works of charity

are meant to convey the mercy of God,which is at the heart of the Gospel.Prospective members and their familiesare most attracted to the Knights ofColumbus when they see the Orderengaged “in service to one, in serviceto all.” More importantly, it is oftenthrough the practice of charity that welead others to Christ and his Church.

For the Order to take full advantageof this special Holy Year of Mercy, thefirst step is for each Knight to openhimself personally to the God who is“rich in mercy.” Jesus is looking at uswith the eyes of mercy, asking us tobelieve in him and trust him. He isn’tmerely asking us to assent to a seriesof abstract truths, but instead to en-trust our lives to him, confident thathe will forgive our sins and open forus the door of mercy in the house ofhis heavenly Father. Even more than the vastness of cre-

ation, the mighty power of God is re-

vealed in his mercy and endless capacityto forgive our sins, giving us new life byhis own eternal newness. During thisholy year, Pope Francis especially urgesus to “place the sacrament of reconcili-ation at the center once more in such away that it will enable people to touchthe grandeur of God’s mercy with theirown hands” (17).May this Holy Year of Mercy be for

our beloved Order, for each of us per-sonally, and for our entire Church atime of grace and joy. And may Mary, the Mother of Mercy, accompany usalong the way.♦

JOHN CARROLL was born into aprominent Maryland family on Jan. 8,1735. At age 13, he was sent to north-ern France, where he attended a Jesuitschool with his cousin, Charles, a futuresigner of the Declaration of Independ-ence. He joined the Jesuits in 1753 andwas ordained in 1761. Father Carrolltaught in Europe until the Jesuit orderwas suppressed in 1773.The young priest set out to minister

to the Catholic population in Maryland.Sympathetic to the U.S. colonial causefor the freedom and what it would meanfor the Church, Father Carroll was askedby the Continental Congress in 1776 toaccompany Benjamin Franklin and oth-ers in an effort to win over support fromCanada. Following the ratification ofAmerican independence in 1783, hewrote, “Freedom and independence ac-quired by the united efforts, and ce-mented with the mingled blood ofProtestant and Catholic fellow-citizens,should be equally enjoyed by all.” In 1789, Father Carroll was named

bishop of Baltimore, thereby becomingthe first bishop of the United States. Anexceptional administrator, he estab-

lished a seminary in Baltimore andfounded Georgetown College (todayGeorgetown University). He also pro-moted religious life, personally encour-aging a future saint, Elizabeth Seton, toestablish the Sisters of Charity for theeducation of girls. In a unanimous vote, Congress chose

Bishop Carroll to deliver a eulogy forPresident George Washington at St.Peter’s Church in Baltimore in 1800. When near death himself, then-Arch-

bishop Carroll shared one of his greatestconsolations: “that I have always beenattached to the practice of devotion tothe Blessed Virgin Mary and have estab-lished it among the people under mycare.” Archbishop Carroll died peace-fully on Dec. 3, 1815.♦

When he was a young pastor, Archbishop Stefan Sorokaof Philadelphia (Ukrainian) was impressed by how a

new Knights of Columbus council energized the faith andleadership of many men.

“The power of fraternal prayer and works of charity in anatmosphere of unity with patriotic love of God, Church andcountry transformed these men,” he recalled in a homily dur-ing the Supreme Convention in Philadelphia last August.“This in turn inspired these Knights and their families toreach out in service to the needs of others.”

Today, as head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholics in theUnited States, Archbishop Soroka is thrilled to see a similar

transformation underway in Ukraine, the land of his father’sbirth. This time, though, it is about giving a boost of Chris-tian life not to just one parish, but to a country of more than40 million people after 70 years of Soviet oppression and 25more of mainly oligarchical misrule.

Members and councils have multiplied in Ukraine since theOrder established a formal presence there over two years ago.And as the country struggles with pro-Russian rebels and ves-tiges of corruption to consolidate recent democratic gains, local Church leaders say the Knights showed up with materialand spiritual assistance when it was most needed.

seems to me the action of Divine Providence,” said Arch-bishop Mieczysław Mokrzycki of Lviv, in western Ukraine.“They’ve come with so much help in the struggle with themany difficulties.”

CALLED TO BE PRESENTThe origin of the Knights’ expansion into Ukraine goes backto 2005 at the 123rd Supreme Convention in Chicago. It wasthere that Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, then major archbishop(now emeritus) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, ap-pealed for a “transplanting” of the Order to Ukraine. The Knights’ way of practically living the faith was needed

to help heal “deep wounds” in Ukrainian society, the cardinalsaid. Communist persecution, he added, could not kill thefaith in people’s hearts, but it did largely eliminate it fromhabits of daily life.Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson took the request seriously,

according to Supreme Director Larry W. Kustra of Winnipeg,Manitoba. Beginning in 2009, Past State Deputy Lawrence Sos-nowich of Washington, D.C., laid groundwork for the Order’sexpansion while Kustra was tasked with preparing a team toconduct degree ceremonies in the Ukrainian language. It helpedthat Manitoba had nine Ukrainian Greek-rite K of C councils, though none of the Ukrainian speakers had any degree experi-ence, Kustra said.During an initial trip to Ukraine in the spring of 2012, the

team initiated Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, whosucceeded Cardinal Husar in 2011 as head of the UkrainianGreek Catholic Church, together with Archbishop Mokrzy-cki, head of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine and for-mer personal secretary of St. John Paul II. The team also gavepresentations on the Order to priests and groups of laymen. They received additional support from Knights in Poland

and returned to Ukraine in May 2013, this time initiatingseveral dozen men in Lviv and in the capital, Kyiv. Now witha critical mass, the first councils could be formed. Thesupreme knight announced the Order’s formal start inUkraine and Lithuania at the 131st Supreme Convention inSan Antonio in August 2013. It was the first international ex-pansion since councils were chartered in Poland in 2006.Major Archbishop Shevchuk welcomed the news as bolster-

ing the ability of Ukraine’s Catholic communities — includingroughly 5 million Greek-rite Catholics and 1 million Latin-rite Catholics — to help renew Christian life in the country. “The cherished and practiced ideals of the Knights of

Columbus resonate deeply in the soul of a Church and apeople experiencing a vivid resurrection in its spiritual andmoral life,” the major archbishop said in a video address tothe convention. The Greek-rite St. Volodymyr Council 15800 in Kyiv and

Latin-rite John Paul II Council 15801 in Lviv were estab-lished in September 2013. On Nov. 6, Major ArchbishopShevchuk celebrated a Divine Liturgy to commemorate thehistoric expansion. In his homily, he reflected on the Order’smission, and said, “We rejoice that knighthood is taking rootin the life of our Church.”Later that month, the approximately 125 members in

Ukraine were caught up in dramatic historical events thatwould put their newly forged commitment to the Order’s prin-ciples of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism to the test.

TRIAL BY FIREOn Nov. 21, 2013, just weeks after Bogdan Kovaliv andYouriy Maletskiy became the charter grand knights of the firstK of C councils in Kyiv and Lviv, respectively, protesters filledMaidan Square in Kyiv to start a “revolution of dignity”

against corruption and Russian influence, and in favor of Eu-ropean integration.Amid freezing temperatures and police repression, the so-called

Euromaidan movement suffered dozens of casualties before theold authorities ceded power in March 2014. Since that time, vi-olence has continued as a result of Russia annexing Crimea andseparatists in eastern Ukraine fighting to break away.Members of Council 15800, meeting just five blocks away

from Maidan during the protests, set to work tending thewounded, providing food and warm clothes, interceding forthose who were arrested, and assisting families of people whodied. Knights also set up a prayer tent at Maidan to offer spir-itual support, thus bolstering the Christian presence of thosestruggling bravely for change. Knights from Lviv traveled 300miles (500 km) to assist these efforts.According to Kovaliv, no one hesitated to offer aid. “Vol-

unteer efforts, solidarity and support for those in need alldemonstrate the Knights of Columbus principles for action,”he said. “And these initiatives probably helped the active de-velopment of the Order.”Meanwhile, awareness of the Knights grew in Ukraine.

Seven new councils in six cities have been added over the pasttwo years.

“At first, it was a little difficult, but after many, many pre-sentations, and after giving a lot of information to the priestsand the bishops, we now have 400 Knights in this country, and I hope we’ll soon have 500,” said Maletskiy, noting thatplans are underway to charter additional councils.

The Knights of Columbus is unique in Ukraine for unitingGreek-rite and Latin-rite Catholics in charitable, fraternal andspiritual activities. For historical reasons, the two communi-ties have tended to stay apart, with little interaction and, attimes, an element of mistrust.

Serving as a force for Church unity in Ukraine was alwaysan objective for the Knights, and the joint initiation of thearchbishops for the two rites set the tone, according to Kustra. Now the Order’s principle of unity is teaching men to worktogether in specific projects.

“By simply being together, we start to remove the misgiv-ings in the minds of some people,” Maletskiy said. “TheKnights of Columbus is definitely helping people to under-stand better and begin to show publicly that we are the sameChurch and we take part in the same Catholic work.”

VITAL ASSISTANCEThe work of the Knights for the Church and the people ofUkraine has been intense at both the local and internationallevels. Supreme Knight Anderson touched on this realitywhen he said at this year’s Supreme Convention that theOrder’s members “are committed to defending life and libertyfor all: for those on the margins of our communities, and forthose on the margins half a world away.”

Ukraine has been a country in transition since the SovietUnion’s collapse in 1991. It has worked slowly to develop bet-ter medical care, for example, and build a basic social safetynet. Recent unrest, with recurring fighting in the east, has hitthe already struggling country hard. Inflation is runningabove 50 percent, and the World Bank says that the economycontracted some 15 percent this year. An estimated 3 millionpeople have fled their homes.

In response, spiritual support has not been lacking. Knightsthe world over responded generously to the supreme knight’sFebruary 2014 call to pray for peace in Ukraine in solidaritywith Pope Francis and the country’s Catholic bishops.

As this prayer campaign has continued, material help hasalso been crucial. “The Ukrainian government is very poorthese days and cannot provide any significant social help. Formany people, the only thing they have left is to rely onmercy,” Archbishop Mokrzycki said in August, adding thatthe local Knights, with help from abroad, “are surroundingthem with care in the daily struggle for survival.”

Knights in Ukraine have raised money locally and channeleddonations from Chicago, Philadelphia and elsewhere to buymedicine and equipment for hospitals. They have also pur-chased and distributed 1,500 wheelchairs through the Knights’partnership with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation and

have provided aid to a children’s hospitalin Lviv.Local Knights have likewise assisted

Caritas efforts by collecting food andclothes for the needy and helping to trans-port materials and volunteers. And theyhave helped refurbish abandoned homesfor refugees and visited troops at Easter, bringing care packages and cheer. A dele-gation from Ukraine even joined the 57thAnnual International Military Pilgrimageto Lourdes.Last February, the Knights of Columbus

Christian Refugee Relief Fund disbursed$400,000 for charitable efforts inUkraine. The country’s Greek-rite Churchand Latin-rite Church each used half ofthe funds to provide emergency food, medicine and shelter for refugee childrenand families. In November, the Supreme Council an-

nounced a second gift of the same amountfor the Church’s continued efforts assist-ing refugees in Ukraine. As in every jurisdiction, the Knights in

Ukraine also actively serve their localchurches. They assist in parish liturgiesand with practical needs, like repairs, andeven helped build a village church. At theconsecration of the Patriarchal Cathedralof the Resurrection in Kyiv in 2013,Knights provided an honor guard.“They’re showing themselves as real

Catholic role models,” Kustra said. “Menand their families are becoming stronger intheir faith, living their faith. And societyin Ukraine is benefitting from the charityworks. Given the political situation in thecountry, they’re doing really well.”The supreme director and past state

deputy is not sure if he will be making anymore trips to Ukraine, though he expectsthe degree ceremonies that he helped adaptwill be getting a lot more use there. Andhe certainly feels enriched and inspired bythe Ukrainians he has gotten to know.“To have the opportunity to go over

and bring the Knights of Columbus andmake a bit of history for the Order reallyaffected us all,” Kustra said. “It’s been theexperience of a lifetime.”♦

ON OCT. 2, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, the longtimepersonal secretary of St. John Paul II and now archbishopof Kraków, Poland, made his first visit to the Saint JohnPaul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C. The occasionwas a Mass and dedication of the main altar of the new Re-demptor Hominis Church.Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington served as prin-

cipal celebrant and homilist of the Mass, which was con-celebrated by Cardinal Dziwisz, Supreme ChaplainArchbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore and other bish-ops and priests. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson andPatrick Kelly, executive director of the Saint John Paul IINational Shrine, as well as other K of C officials were alsoin attendance. The shrine has recently undergone a major renovation,

which included the creation of the Redemptor HominisChurch and a reliquary chapel. Both chapels house altarsfeaturing representations of the Twelve Apostles, created bynoted Italian sculptor Edoardo Ferrari. Together, the twoaltars contain first-class relics of 11 saints connected to St.John Paul II or the evangelization of North America. The walls of both sanctuaries feature mosaics designed

by Jesuit Father Marko Ivan Rupnik. Based in Rome, Fa-ther Rupnik and the Centro Aletti community of artistshave installed mosaics in more than 100 sanctuariesthroughout the world. The new mosaics at the Saint JohnPaul II National Shrine were completed in September.

Drawing hundreds of visitors, the Mass and altar ded-ication in the Redemptor Hominis Church marked a sig-nificant step forward in the life of the shrine, which wasdesignated as a national shrine by the U.S. Conferenceof Catholic Bishops in 2014 and is a place of prayer andpilgrimage. In prepared remarks following Mass and altar dedication,

Cardinal Dziwisz reflected on the “polyphonic” legacy ofSt. John Paul II’s holiness. “Holiness in a sense is a synthesisof all who John Paul II was,” the cardinal said. “He wouldstand every day before God, to contemplate his face, andGod led him to serve the Church and the world.”Among the many titles that St. John Paul II earned, Car-

dinal Dziwisz highlighted that he was known as the “popeof the young.” “I take this opportunity to invite the young people from

the United States and Canada for the 2016 World YouthDay in Kraków, the city of John Paul II, the spiritual capitalof Divine Mercy,” he added. Those in attendance were also invited to view an ad-

vanced screening of a new K of C-produced documentary,Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Com-munism, and to visit the shrine’s permanent exhibit, “A Giftof Love: The Life of Saint John Paul II,” which allows vis-itors to walk in the footsteps of John Paul II by exploringthe major events of his life and themes of his papacy. They’ve already authored many success stories in theirlives, so it’s hardly surprising that Patrick Gulbranson of

Iowa, Chris Dooley of Maryland and Catherine Partlow ofOntario rose to the occasion at the Special Olympics WorldGames in Los Angeles.Representing the United States last July 25-Aug. 2, Gul-

branson netted three top-six performances in bowling, andDooley claimed a third and a fourth place in kayaking. Forher part, Partlow took home three gold medals in track andfield for Team Canada. These finishes were the

latest in a series of personalachievements related toSpecial Olympics, whichprovides athletic and socialopportunities for youth andadults with intellectual dis-abilities.“It gives me courage, and

benefitted from major fi-nancial and volunteer sup-port from the Knights of Columbus throughout its nearly50-year history. This year, the Knights covered the costs ofevery athlete from the United States and Canada — morethan 400 total — who participated in the World Games.“Our support exemplifies our commitment to the dignity of

every person, our dedication to assisting with our neighbors’needs whatever they may be, and our deep appreciation for thegreat work done by Special Olympics,” Supreme Knight Carl A.Anderson said when announcing the Order’s $1.4 million

pledge in 2014, at which time the Knights of Columbus wasnamed a “Founding Champion of the World Games.”

A SEA OF SUPPORTDeputy Supreme Knight Logan T. Ludwig led a delegation ofK of C representatives and volunteers to this year’s SpecialOlympics World Games, beginning with the Opening Cere-mony at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Over the next week, more than 6,500 Special Olympics ath-

letes from 165 countriescompeted in 25 sports atthe World Games. The sec-ond largest sporting eventin the world after theOlympic Games, it drewmore than 30,000 volun-teers, 500,000 spectatorsand millions of televisionviewers. Taking place everytwo years, it was the firsttime the international eventwas held in North Americasince 2009.The Knights’ support of

Special Olympics extendsback to 1968, when theOrder helped Eunice

Kennedy Shriver and her husband, Sargent, a long-timeKnight, host the first international Special Olympics SummerGames in Chicago.Since that time, the Order has raised and donated more

than $600 million to programs for people with intellectualand physical disabilities. Their efforts are reflected at thecouncil level by numerous fundraising events for SpecialOlympics, which uses sports to foster a greater sense of dignityand inclusion.

“This vision fits perfectly with what the Knights of Colum-bus stands for,” Deputy Supreme Knight Ludwig said. “As acreation of God, each human life has a special value, and as acharitable and family organization, we respect life in all of itsstages — from the unborn to the end of life and everywherein between.”Mark Tisl, who is a fellow member of Stuart (Iowa) Council

1961 with Patrick Gulbranson, noted that, with the help oftwo other Knights they collected more than $425 in a mere90 minutes during their council’s annual “Tootsie Roll” drivethis year.“When the people asked us what we were collecting for, we

told them that the Knights are a big supporter of SpecialOlympics and helping the underprivileged,” Tisl said.Gulbranson, who was born with Down syndrome and is

now 28, said that participation in both the Knights and Spe-cial Olympics has given him a stronger sense of identity.“I can be who I want to be,” he said.Gary Harms, president and CEO of Special Olympics Iowa,

befriended Gulbranson during this year’s World Games. Amember of St. Francis Council 12422 in West Des Moines,Harms called the Knights’ link with Gulbranson “a great ex-ample of the inclusion and fellowship that is part of ourbrotherhood.” When Special Olympics athletes like Gulbranson are given

opportunities, Harms added, “they simply blossom and excel.”

Last year, Gulbranson was even invited to join Tisl’s bowl-ing team.“He fits right in with the rest of the group,” Tisl said.In addition to financial assistance, Knights actively staff

Special Olympics events as volunteers. One such volunteer isJim Jennings, a fellow member with Chris Dooley of ReginaCoeli Council 2274 in Easton, Md.Jennings noted that Special Olympics athletes are always

cheered on “no matter whether they finish first or last,” addingthat brother Knights in their council readily support Dooley.Dooley, 32, said he cherishes the camaraderie he enjoys

among his brother Knights, fellow athletes and supporters.“You make a lot of friends,” he said.Dooley’s mother, Peggy, a longtime special education

teacher who adopted him when he was 7 years old, is espe-cially grateful for the support of her son’s council.“They really, really care about Chris,” she said. “I’m always

thanking them for being patient with him. And they’ll sayback to me, ‘No, we want to thank you.’”

LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLGlenn MacDonell, president and CEO of Special OlympicsOntario and a member of St. Patrick’s Council 12782 in Mis-sissauga, observed that the Knights of Columbus enjoyed con-siderable positive exposure with the World Games, adding thatthe partnership between the organizations is “a perfect fit.”

Yet the biggest winners, emphasized MacDonnell, who hasknown track-and-field star Partlow for many years, are theathletes themselves.“They deal with the athletic successes and the failures so

well,” he said. “Maybe it’s because they’ve already dealt withsomething much more difficult.”Facing steep competition from athletes around the world,

Gulbranson, Dooley and Partlow saw their training and prac-tice pay off in their respective events. In bowling, Gulbranson earned fourth place in team com-

petition, fifth in individual, and sixth in doubles by throwingwell over his 124 average, including a 176 game.“I couldn’t believe it. That had to be the best moment of

my life. I felt great,” Gulbranson said. Dooley was equally thrilled with his bronze medal in the

200-meter kayaking race and fourth place in the 500. “I feltawesome, and proud of myself for accomplishing a lot,” he said.Dooley, who trains under Jack Brosius, a member of the

1972 U.S. Olympic kayaking team, noted that his sport isvery challenging: “You have to be in very good shape. Andyou have to keep steady or you’ll flip over.”Whereas Los Angeles marked the first World Games for

Gulbranson and Dooley, Partlow was making her fourth ap-pearance after competing in Dublin in 2003, Shanghai in2007 and Athens in 2011. This year, with first-place wins inthe 100- and 200-meter dashes and 1,600-meter relay, sheequaled her number of gold medals from previous WorldGames combined. And she was particularly happy with therelay win.“It was the best relay we could have put together. I was very

proud of everyone on my team,” Partlow said.Like many Special Olympics athletes, Partlow, Dooley and

Gulbranson have participated in multiple Special Olympics

sports over the years — that is, when they aren’t busy workingor volunteering. In addition, all three serve as global messen-gers, promoting Special Olympics through various commu-nity appearances.“I like the social atmosphere of [Special Olympics], and it’s

given me a great opportunity to travel,” Partlow said.“It’s been amazing to see her confidence develop and to

have the opportunities to broaden her horizons,” said her fa-ther, Tom Partlow, a member of Msgr. Gerard Breen Council8309 in Whitby, Ontario. He added that Catherine is a natural in her public-relations

role. “She’s definitely at home in front of a microphone.” Peggy Dooley said that she has taken Chris to almost every

available Special Olympics event and venue. “It’s just openedup a whole new world to him,” she said with pride, adding,“He’s gained a lot of friends, and I have, too.”John Gulbranson, Patrick’s father and a member of Council

1961, reflected similarly on the impact that Special Olympicshas had on his son’s life.“The inclusion and the self-esteem that come from Special

Olympics have played a huge part in his development,” hesaid. “He wouldn’t be anywhere near where he is without it.”Through all their trials and triumphs, the athletes ulti-

mately cast a spotlight on the beauty and dignity of humanlife.“They inspire and show us all what is really important in

life, no matter what the challenge,” said Deputy SupremeKnight Ludwig. “What I always admire about them is thatthese athletes don’t ask to be treated special — they just wanta chance.”♦

Five years after the historic rescue, Knight Greg Hall recalls his role in the mission to save 33 miners in Chile

by Columbia staff

On Aug. 5, 2010, a catastrophic collapse at the San Josécopper and gold mine in northern Chile trapped 33

miners 2,300 feet underground for more than two months.Greg Hall, a member of Anton J. Frank Council 8771 inHouston, ultimately led the operation, known as “Plan B,”that freed the men on Oct. 17. Drilling under extreme scrutiny on a job made more com-

plicated by the depth, the unstable ground and the degree ofthe borehole combined created a nearly insurmountable taskthat Hall says he and his team were able to accomplish onlywith God’s help. Five years after the disaster’s successful

outcome, the miners’ story has beenbrought to the big screen in a film titledThe 33, staring Antonio Banderas, LouDiamond Phillips and Juliette Binoche.Based on the book Deep Down Dark byPulitzer Prize-winning journalist HéctorTobar, the film was released Nov. 13.Because Hall’s role in coordinating the

rescue was largely behind the scenes, hewas not represented as a character in themovie, though he was involved as a con-sultant. In October, Columbia spoke toHall about the rescue and the moviebased on the ordeal.

COLUMBIA: How did you become in-volved in the operation to rescue the 33trapped Chilean miners in 2010?

GREG HALL: I’ve had a company [inChile] since 1992. We manufacture equipment and give tech-nical services to the drillers. When the collapse happened, thegovernment quickly found out that if the miners were alive, they would be somewhere between 400 and 800 meters down. The drill rigs they were bringing in to try to find the minersdidn’t have enough equipment to reach those depths, so wewere contacted to equip all those rigs to get there.

COLUMBIA: Can you give us a better understanding of justhow daunting this situation was?

GREG HALL: After we had found [the miners] on day 17 andwe came home, I was hearing all the plans that were being de-veloped to save them. The government was talking about several

months — months and months and months. And, of course, the ground was shifting and the miners were in danger. I had been able to see the personal messages they gave to

their families, and that made me feel like we were family. I re-member telling my wife, “You know what we would do if thatwere our son or brother down there — we would go downthere and try to dig them out with our hands.”So I decided to try to develop a plan using whatever equip-

ment was available. All the calculations, all the simulations wemade showed that it couldn’t be done. But again, what would

you do if that was your brother? So fi-nally we did that, and the governmentcalled it “Plan B.”

COLUMBIA: It sounds like you andyour team were really motivated by loveand concern. Can you say more aboutthat part of the story?

GREG HALL: Up until that time, wehad only drilled for profit, never for peo-ple. So there was an awesome weight onus. Plus we had the family watching usevery minute. They would be calling tous, “Don’t let our son die. Don’t let ourbrother die. Please save our daddy.” So there was a lot of pressure besides

the technical, and the job itself was morethan we were capable of doing. At onepoint we were about 140 meters fromthe bottom of the hole and we got stuck. We could not get out, and there was

nothing we could do. The miners were calling to us askingwhat was going on. I didn’t have the heart to tell them that wehad failed. At the time, I remembered thinking that we weren’t alone,

that the Lord had been with us. So I actually said the words,“Lord, we’ve done everything we can. If you want them out, you’re going to have to send your angels down and dig thebit out.”And then the bit started moving. I’ve had many people who know the business come up to

me and say that that hole was impossible to drill. One of myfriends said, “God drilled that hole.” That’s when I said, “Goddid drill that hole, and I just had a good seat.”

COLUMBIA: You obviously possess very specialized train-ing. Did it occur to you at any point that you were preparedfor this remarkable opportunity to save lives? GREG HALL: I guess I just figured it was so strange for a per-

son from Texas to have a company in Chile and then all of asudden be involved in this. After it was over, one of the news-casters asked me, “Greg, how did this job change your faith?”And I said, “My faith changed the job.” We realized prettyquickly that it was going to be providence if this was going tohappen. Things that are impossible for us are possible for God.

COLUMBIA: Tell us about your membership in the Knightsof Columbus. What inspired you to join and in what wayshas being a Knight impacted your life?GREG HALL: I joined about 10 years ago. I haven’t been as

active as I’d like because I was in seminary. I became a perma-nent deacon and now I teach at the seminary. But I love theKnights. Whenever somebody’s in trouble or the church needssomething or I need something as a deacon, we call theKnights and they’re always right there. It’s one thing to sit in your house and pray for people, which

is obviously really important. But you also have to get outthere. Christ calls and sends. The Knights are sent, and I al-ways know I can rely on my brothers. They’re people wherethe rubber meets the road.I always recommend that all Catholic men join the Knights

because it’s a way to really be in family and fraternity. God

calls us to be in communion and to go help — that’s what theKnights do.

COLUMBIA: What can you tell us about the film The 33?Why should people go see it?GREG HALL: The film does a great job of showing the heroic

people who were involved in this. And the heroes were the minersand their families. [The filmmakers] do a tremendous job show-ing that they had a lot of differences, but they pulled together. And our team was the same way. We had people who spoke

different languages, who had different life experiences, and weall pulled together. The film shows the heroism of the familiesas well as what we can do when we work together.

COLUMBIA: Is there anything else that you’d like to share?GREG HALL: In Chile, one of the miners asked me, “Greg,

why did people care about us? We’re just little Chilean miners.”I thought about that and realized that it’s really because we’reall created in the image and likeness of God. The whole worldcared because we’re all brothers and sisters, we’re all family. The other thing is that if people go to see the movie, it will

help the miners. The miners didn’t receive any money from[their ordeal]. They were left completely high and dry. That’s why I’m involved in the PR for the movie, because if

it reaches a certain level, some of the money will go to the min-ers. So anyone who wants to help the miners in a real way cango see the movie. Plus it’s a great movie. So it’s a win-win.♦

On Sept. 6, the harmonious sound of hymns in Arabic,Greek and English filled Jesus the King Melkite

Catholic Church in Markham, Ontario, as more than 300parishioners and Knights welcomed Archbishop Joseph-JulesZerey of Jerusalem for a special eucharistic celebration.Archbishop Zerey’s visit marked the fifth year since Jesus

the King Arab Christian Council 15045 launched itsJerusalem Students project, an initiative to help the MelkiteCatholic Patriarchate in Jerusalem provide scholarships tochildren of needy Christian families in the Holy Land. The project, spearheaded by Grand Knight Hikmat Dan-

dan, was awarded the Inter-national Youth ActivityAward at the 2013 SupremeConvention in San Antonio.Since its start, the initiativehas invited donors in theToronto area and beyond tosponsor students studying atthe Greek Catholic Patriar-chate School in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem. ArchbishopZerey traveled to the Melkiteparish in September to per-sonally deliver new studentfiles to the sponsors and tospeak about the situation ofChristians in the Holy Landtoday.“We are living horrible

days in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Iraq,” thearchbishop said in his homily. “In the name of the Church, Ithank the Knights of Columbus and all the parishioners ofJesus the King who are making large efforts to help therefugees as well as the Christians in the Holy Land, especiallyfor your donations to the students of Beit Sahour who cannotafford tuition.”

HELP FOR THE HOLY LANDThe initial inspiration for the Jerusalem Students initiativecame from a talk that Archbishop Zerey gave to parishionersat Jesus the King Church in 2010.“The archbishop explained to us the hardships that families

were enduring, specifically in the little town of Beit Sahour,”

recalled Dandan, who is a native of Lebanon and a MelkiteCatholic. “The Greek Catholic Patriarchate School was in se-rious financial difficulty and might have had to close down.” Beit Sahour, whose name means “place of the night watch,”

is a small town two miles east of Bethlehem and five milessoutheast of Jerusalem. It is the site of the “Shepherds’ Fields,”where, according to tradition, angels appeared to the shep-herds to announce the birth of Jesus (cf. Lk 2:8-15).Speaking at Jesus the King Church, Archbishop Zerey said,

“I always consider that our parishioners are the great-great-great-grandchildren of the shepherds.”

With a population of ap-proximately 14,000, Beit Sa-hour is 80 percent Christianand 20 percent Muslim. Resi-dents work largely in the reli-gious tourism industry and asartisans, using olive wood, mother of pearl and embroi-dery to make religious andother handmade items. In recent times, however,

many families have struggledto make ends meet. Thedecades-long Palestinian-Is-raeli conflict and a precariouseconomy have taken a heavytoll on people in the HolyLand. Many have emigrated, hoping to find more stability

abroad. Since 2000, the already tiny percentage of Christiansin the region has halved — dropping from 2 to 1 percent. After listening to the archbishop’s presentation in 2010,

Dandan felt an urgency to respond.“I went home and as a Knight I started thinking of how I

could help,” he said. “As Knights, we cannot accept that theland where Jesus and the Apostles walked and preached be-come a ‘museum of Christianity’ without Christians.”One way to sustain the Christian presence in the Holy

Land, Dandan realized, was to give parents hope for the futureof their families. This meant helping them provide a good ed-ucation for their children and supporting Christian schools. With the archbishop’s blessing, Dandan set to work by

creating a website — jerusalemstudents.org — and giving

presentations in local parishes and councils, ultimately gath-ering sponsors for needy students at the Greek Catholic Patri-archate School in Beit Sahour.Sponsors are asked to pledge $500 to help families in need

cover the annual tuition of approximately $900 per student. Each sponsor then receives a student profile, including a pho-tograph and a personal letter of gratitude. Sponsors also re-ceive homemade cards from the student at Christmas andEaster. According to Sawsan Istephan, principal of the Greek

Catholic Patriarchate School, the school currently enrolls 655students ranging from kindergarten through grade 12, ap-proximately 80 percent of whom are Christians, as are mostof the teachers.“Our school strives to serve the Christian minority, preserve

the Christian spirit of the school and better communicate itsGospel values,” she said. The school follows the local curriculum and maintains the

highest standards and teaching methods in the liberal arts, sci-

ence and technology. While most classes are conducted intheir native language, Arabic, the students are also taughtEnglish and German from an early age.Integral to the school’s mission is to provide an educational

environment where Christian faith is cultivated and can belived fully.“Our students receive a strong formation in love, forgive-

ness, acceptance, respect and sacrifice, which are transmittedthrough our religious education classes, Mass and prayers inthe morning,” Istephan explained. “Children who attendother schools, such as the public ones, do not receive a Chris-tian education and are frequently deprived of it, as they mustattend school on Christian holidays.”It is also very important for parents that the school offers

students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular ac-tivities, such as music, drama, ballet and sports programs. “In this way,” Istephan said, “parents do not have to enroll

them in other institutions or centers, and they can use themoney they save on the basic necessities of life.”

INVESTING IN OUR CHILDRENSo far, 40 students have been spon-sored through the Jerusalem Studentsinitiative, and 123 more still need help. The majority of sponsors thus far havebeen Knights — including 16 individ-ual members and eight councils. One such council is St. Justin Martyr

Council 11708 in Unionville, Ontario, which has sponsored a boy namedRamez, now in grade 10, since 2013.Because Ramez’s father suffers from aphysical disability, the family has noregular income.“When we read about Ramez on the

website and his tough circumstances,we recognized that this is a real boots-on-the-ground situation,” said RandyGalluzzi, financial secretary of Council11708. “Here’s an opportunity to pro-vide support not just for one year, butthrough his academic career at theschool.”Council 11708 currently donates

$750 for Ramez’s annual tuition, andfor the past two years council mem-bers have communicated with Ramezthrough letters and photographs.Ramez has also sent the council anolive wood crucifix and a rosary ingratitude.Ramez’s father, Imad, described what

the sponsorship has meant for his son.“Ramez feels loved and accompa-

nied because of the sponsorship,” hesaid. “He has gained more self-confi-dence, and he feels more responsiblebecause he does not want to disap-point the people that are investing inhis education.” As a graduate of the Patriarchate

school himself, Imad has a keen awareness of the value of theeducation his son is receiving. “This is the school I went to as a child, and I know that

Ramez’s capabilities can be cultivated here,” he said. “It iswhere he can be prepared to pursue studies in all major uni-versities in the Holy Land and abroad.”Following the Mass at Jesus the King Church in September,

Ontario State Deputy Alain E. Cayer addressed the sponsorswho were about to receive student files containing their per-sonal letters. “As you will realize today, you have made a difference in

someone’s life,” he said, adding that the Jerusalem Studentsinitiative is much more than a fundraising project. “This is anopportunity for Christians in North America to sustain the

presence of Christians in the Holy Land by investing in themjust as they do with their own children.”Indeed, according to Galluzzi, members of Council 11708

feel as if they are supporting a member of their own family, and they are blessed to know how much their support makesa difference.“We feel that it’s like an uncle helping his nephew with his

education,” said Galluzzi. “It is fundamental for people whoare committed to living in the Holy Land, and have been therefor generations, to have the opportunity not only to survive, but to flourish, to blossom.”♦

‘MY VOCATIONHAD TRULY COME

FROM GOD.’I was born in Kerala, India, to Catholic par-

ents. They valued family prayer and the rosary, but never openly encouraged vocations. It wasonly through an informational brochure that Ifirst heard God’s call. At age 16, I secretly wrote a letter to the sis-

ters, who — to my surprise — showed up at ourhouse three days later! At first, my parents werenot supportive, but they finally let me go for ayear with the promise that I would return homeif I were ever unhappy. That never happened. I knew I wanted to be

a missionary sister, and I took my final vows in1997. By this time, my parents were very sup-portive because they knew my vocation hadtruly come from God.Since coming to the United States 15 years

ago I have received many joys and graces. Toleave the comfort of friends and family is a chal-lenge, but I believe the words of Christ: “Every-one who has given up houses or brothers orsisters or father or mother or children or landsfor the sake of my name will receive a hundredtimes more” (Mt 19:29).

‘HEWANTED TOBUILD UP CATHOLIC

FAMILIES’Father McGivney would be proud of this

$100 billion achievement. This insuranceprogram is very much his program. He waslooking for a solution to the never-ending fi-nancial suffering of widows and orphans inhis parish. He labored over the details of theoriginal insurance program. He studied otherfraternal benefit societies to see what theirprograms looked like. He knew this benefitwas needed, and he knew that it could pro-vide tremendous value.

Don’t forget, he himself was a man whohad to leave the seminary and return homewhen his father died unexpectedly. The needfor this type of fraternal benefit was very realto him.

He wanted to build up Catholic families— in faith, in fellowship, in charity, but infinances, too, and I think he would betremendously proud of how his organizationhas carried on his mission.
