Tap your tooth. What do you notice about the surface? Is it quite hard or soft? Our teeth are hard because of enamel which is a hard layer that surrounds your teeth.Egg shells are surprisingly similar to teeth – they also have enamel! The white inside of an egg shell is made of enamel. We are going to use this to help us study the effects of sugar on our teeth through an experiment.

Egg shell experimentStep 1: Find two empty containers, bowls or cups.Step 2: Crack an egg in half and place the inside (egg white and yolk) to the side.Step 3: In one container, fill it with some water.Step 4: In the other container, fill it with the same amount of water and add two tablespoons of sugar.Step 5: Label each container so you don’t forget which is which!Step 6: Place each egg shells gently into one container. Make sure there is enough water to cover the egg shells. You can also choose to have other containers with orange juice or fizzy drink in your experiment.
