Ship’s registry: United States

DEAR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS, When you see the Pacific Ocean from Cape Disappointment or the basalt cliffs of the Columbia River, you are taking in views shared by America’s great explorers. These awe-inspiring views are part of your carefully designed voyage that follows the path of the Lewis and Clark expedition that redrew the map of the American West.

You’ll sail further into history as you transit the Columbia River Gorge. Traveling by ship allows you to see time layered in the riverbanks, where the Missoula Floods of 15,000 years ago carved much of the route you travel, and the landslides of 500 years ago altered the river’s course by a full mile.

Join Dr. Patrick Muffler, geologist emeritus, and a top-notch expedition team aboard the 100-guest National Geographic Quest. Through their informative talks and engaging companionship, they put everything into context, weaving an ongoing narrative from each day’s events. Even the ship’s hotel staff contributes to your appreciation of the region, as they introduce you to Oregon and Washington’s burgeoning food and wine scene.

You also see some modern marvels of human engineering—the imposing systems of locks and large-span bridges. Look forward to a possible lock transit aboard a Zodiac, to kayaking, cycling down winding roads, a winery and brewery tour, and a visit to the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum.

We hope you’ll join us, October 11-17, 2018 on an expedition featuring the best of this unique region. To make your reservation, please return the enclosedreservation form or call 800-252-4910.

Sincerely,

Margaret M. BetchartPresident, Betchart Expeditions, Inc.,For AAAS Travels, ACS and Sigma Xi Expeditionswww.betchartexpeditions.com

Representing AAAS, ACS, and Sigma Xi on the voyage will be Dr. Patrick Muffler. Dr. Muffler is a geologist emeritus, US Geological Survey, and has had a long career with the USGS addressing volcanic issues in the western U.S., including managing the USGS Geothermal Research and Volcano Hazards program. Patrick has had a special focus on Yellowstone and Lassen Volcanic National

Parks, and supervised both the Hawaii and Cascades Volcano Observatories. He has represented AAAS and Betchart on many voyages in Southeast Alaska, a region he mapped and studied as a graduate student, and on many Columbia River voyages. He will look forward to sharing the fascinating geologic highlights along the Columbia River with you!

The intrepid spirit of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark permeates this corner of the continental U.S. where they led the Corps of Discovery expedition. Traveling in their footsteps, you gain a deeper understanding of what they endured and the curiosity that spurred them on. Your

itinerary includes stops that embrace that heritage of discovery. Visit Fort Clatsop, where the Corps hunkered down for the winter of 1805-06; take in the eclectic galleries at the Maryhill Museum which include Native American basketry and a world-class Rodin collection. At the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM), explore one of the largest collections of still-functioning antique cars and planes in the country.

From Hells Canyon, America’s deepest, river-cut canyon, to Palouse Falls, which drops dramatically into a cavernous plunge pool, the geology of the Pacific Northwest tells the story of a restless land forged through the eons by catastrophic volcanoes, Ice Age floods, and powerful landslides. Yet, today, you are able to enjoy its beauty peacefully aboard your expedition ship, employing kayaks and Zodiacs to explore its wild reaches up close. Around every bend of the Columbia and Snake rivers, the region’s unique natural history reveals itself in the layered rock walls of basalt, some up to three miles thick. These rivers also offer up another exhilarating marvel: eight locks which lift or lower the ship some 700 feet, nearly 10 times what the Panama Canal entails!

When’s the last time you ate bread that held within it the secret of shifting topography and ancient volcanoes, or salmon whose fate is linked to the health of the regional river system? Like the geologic and historical sites of this region, the culinary landscape has intriguing stories to share as well. Throughout the week, you have myriad opportunities to taste the bounty of the Pacific Northwest—when you visit local farm stands, and at every meal aboard—since the chef provisions the ship with food harvested along the very river you explore daily. So breakfast, lunch, and dinner feature fresh, local fare.

CHEERS TO LOCAL WINE & BEERLocal wines served aboard represent the various growing areas and the grape varieties which embody the region’s best—including vintners you visit on this voyage. And the regional craft beers are on the radar of beer cognoscenti nationwide. Enjoy complimentary tastings during the evening recap and dinner—as a way to experience the full richness and diversity of the Pacific Northwest.

“ We’re turning our guests into locavores by supporting Pacific Northwest producers almost exclusively. Our goal is to cross-utilize ingredients from a 150-mile radius, manage our fisheries, and provision sustainable products with minimal processing, no added hormones or antibiotics. We also continue to rely on providers who have earned a Food Alliance certification—this esteemed designation ensures that food is produced by well-treated workers; that meat products come from humanely raised animals; and that the regional soil, water, and wildlife habitats are protected and enhanced.”

COLUMBIA & SNAKE RIVERS JOURNEY:HARVESTS, HISTORY & LANDSCAPES7 DAYS/6 NIGHTS–NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC QUEST

The Corps of Discovery expedition, led by Lewis and Clark from 1804 to 1806, was a dramatic episode in American history. Conceived by President Thomas Jefferson as more than a geographic expedition,

it studied native cultures, collected specimens, and, through maps, put form to what was terra incognita. Traveling aboard the 100-guest National Geographic Quest, retrace Lewis and Clark’s rich history of exploration. Visit campsites of the Corps of Discovery and learn about their relationships with the Native American tribes. See diverse landscapes, transit a series of eight locks, and enjoy locally and sustainably sourced cuisine, including award-winning wines and craft brews.

DAY 1: PORTLAND, OREGON/EMBARKBoard the ship and cruise through the center of Portland on the Willamette River before reaching the Columbia River. (D)

DAY 2: ASTORIAYou begin your journey by navigating the Columbia to the mouth of the river at Astoria. At Fort Clatsop, where the explorers hunkered down for the wet winter of 1805-1806, walk through the full-scale recon-structed fort.
