EPA Lead-Safe Certification: Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP)Instructors: Ted Pearce & Chuck Griffith

Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by

disturbing lead-based paint. To protect against this risk, the EPA issued new regulations requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning. As of April 2010, all contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in structures built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. This course, taught by EPA Lead-Safe Certified instructors, will help you to understand and comply with these regulations. Avoid the risk of stiff government fines and civil liability while protecting yourself, your crew, and your customers from a health risk. All course materials provided. Class will break 1 hour for lunch.

Upon completion of the certificate, one should have the necessary sewing skills to enter a design school. Remembering the War in the Valley

Instructor: Mike BunnThis year marks the beginning of the national commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, a

dramatic milestone in our nation’s history that continues to have impact on our society today. In honor of the occasion, the Chattahoochee Valley Civil War Sesquicentennial Planning Committee, a collaborative group of dozens of area cultural institutions, invites you be a part of a special evening exploring the impact of the war on our area. A panel of speakers, including favorite local historian Billy Winn; noted scholar Dr. David Williams, author of Rich Man’s War: Class, Caste, and Confederate Defeat in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley; and representatives from area museums and historic sites will discuss what life was like here during the war and this area’s involvement in events of national importance. The audience will also get a sneak peek at plans for a new bi-state interpretive park being planned on the banks of the Chattahoochee in both Columbus and Phenix City which will focus on the Battle of Columbus fought on April 16, 1865.

Anime and Cartooning: Anime IInstructor: Stephen Glass

Students will explore the history of Anime in the modern Japanese culture and see how much influence it has in our

modern society. This class will challenge the western concept of what animation and cartoons are used for. Students will learn how to draw proportions while making anime styled characters. Becoming an anime artist starts just by drawing a few lines.

This class will build upon the foundations laid from the Anime I. Students will advance in their understanding as to

what makes anime different from regular cartoons as well as learning the building of character arc. Concept, story and character drawing will be emphasized in this class. These are the building blocks to creating your own story!


Anime and Cartooning: Anime III (Ages 8-14)Instructor: Stephen Glass

Taking on the lessons of character proportions and concepts of the story, the students will begin to create other

characters and build the relationships between them. This will be the most fun and challenging of the anme and cartooning courses because it really stretches the minds to flesh out the world in which these charaters live and how they relate to each other.


Anime and Cartooning: Cartooning (Ages 8-14)Instructor: Stephen Glass

This is a class that will show how a simple sketch like drawing can convey much deeper meanings through an

understanding of symbols, humor, and the times of the people. Cartooning artists don’t need to know how to draw the Mona Lisa nor the Sistine Chapel. Skills in drawing are important but realistic depiction is only a small part of the equation. Come learn how to make better sketches and how to make a point with them.


Sign Language I (Ages 8-14)Instructor: Kristin LukeInterested in learning how to communicate with the hearing impaired? Our sign language classes provide students with the opportunity to learn the basic use of sign language. Students will experience a fun motivating environment that enables students to grasp sign language in a stress-free and interactive way.

Leather Tooling for Beginners (Ages 12-18)Instructor: Cindy Newton

Ever admired tooled leather and wished you could learn how it is done? You are in luck! Come learn how to create

stamped leather and a tooled masterpiece. Participants will learn the techniques of preparing leather for stamping, how to create a unique pattern, stamping techniques, and how to paint or stain a leather bookmark. After mastering this technique, learn how to cut and stamp a pattern using leather tools to create the raised image.Completed pieces will be preserved using leather paint or stain. Information for purchasing your own leather tools and supplies will be provided.



Halloween Horrors (Ages 8-12)Instructor: Cindy Newton

Want a scary prop to terrify your Halloween visitors this October 31? Come to a class where live snakes and spiders will be on

hand as models, to create the most realistic creature to meet your trick-or-treaters! Large scale reproductions will be created from paper-mache, wire, foam tubes, and other items and decorated to create a realistic version of your choice of creature. Come prepared to get dirty and be dressed for mess! Students should bring work gloves to use for handling sharp wire. Also bring a bottle of water and snacks or a bag lunch.


Last Child OutsideInstructor: Cindy Newton

Do you get sick of seeing your children glued to a TV set, video game, or other electronic device? Do you wish that they could enjoy

exploring the world outside like you once did? Look no further! Students will explore the outdoor world of CSU campus with a field biologist, and discover the natural marvels that can be found in our own backyards. Live snakes, lizards, and spiders will be used to teach the students about reptile and arachnid identification, safety, and how they benefit nature and us. Explore the world of birds, insects, and small mammals and discover how we can help our planet and those animals we share it with. Come dressed for the weather and bring a water bottle. Bring a camera if you would like to photograph our discoveries!

Math SuccessInstructor: Bliss Lucas

Are you preparing to take the COMPASS, SAT, GED or GACE? Do you struggle with math concepts on the job? Take this

course and you will learn and succeed! This course is totally self-paced and individualized. Each student is assessed and taught exactly what they need to know using a highly effective math curriculum on the computer with a qualified instructor who is available to tutor you every step of the way. You do not waste time working on concepts you already know. Based upon years of research on how people learn, the adaptive and supportive features of the course curriculum ensure students are able to quickly experience high levels of success and actually enjoy the learning process. As you move through the program, you will discover that your motivation becomes exceptionally high because you are learning and understanding the concepts - gaining confidence every step of the way! Use the program in class and at home for up to one year.


Driver’s EducationInstructor: Julius Graham, Jr.Start your driver training with the professionals at Columbus State and use the solid foundation you’ll build when driving for rest of your life! This class for young drivers includes 30 hours in the classroom with topics that include vehicle laws, how to drive defensively and simple vehicle maintenance. Students will schedule six hours of behind-the-wheel training outside of the classroom. This instruction also features the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program certificate required for teenage drivers. You should have some driving experience and a valid Learner’s Permit before enrolling in this class.

Yoga for Youth (Ages 12-18)Instructor: Emily Mulvhill

A yoga class designed for young adults that focuses on developing muscle strength and flexibility, building self-awareness, and

promoting positive interaction. Traditional yoga postures, flowing sequences, and breathing exercises are introduced. Yoga games, great music and partner yoga make this class exciting and fun, while restorative yoga and simple yoga techniques reduce stress. Benefits include: improvements in relaxation, centering, balance and focus for fine arts performers; cross training for athletes; techniques to manage academic and social pressure; reduced stress, improved posture, increased strength and flexibility and an increase in overall fitness! IMPORTANT INFORMAT IONWHEN TO REGISTER Register EARLY! Registration is now available and should be completed early to guarantee a space in the class. Late registration will be accepted if the class is not full.

FEES Course fees are stated at the end of each course description and payment is due at the time of registration. Laws exempting senior citizens from college tuition costs do not apply to these self-supported courses. No cash is available after 4:30 p.m. If you register after 4:30 p.m., please have the exact amount or pay by check, credit card, or company billing (purchase order number and contact person required). Make checks payable to Columbus State University.

REFUNDS/CANCELLATIONS Continuing Education is self-supporting and all costs are covered through student registration fees. In the event of cancellation or changes of times and dates, we will attempt to notify you at least two business days before the course begins. If you cannot attend a course as planned, you may receive a CSU Continuing Education class credit. If you choose to withdraw from a class, please notify us before 5:00 pm at least three business days prior to the class start date. A full refund minus a $15 processing fee or a credit will be issued. Class credits are good for one year. If you withdraw after the three-business day deadline, but before the class begins, you will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given after a class begins. Refunds are not available for College Readiness classes.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY Columbus State University will not issue refunds for classes which have been postponed due to inclem-ent weather or other circumstances beyond our control. We will make every effort to reschedule such classes. In the event of inclement weather, tune into your local radio or television station for information about closings.

PERMANENT RECORDS The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized measurement of noncredit course work. One CEU (1.0) may be awarded for each ten hours of participation in an approved program. We keep a permanent record of participation in selected programs, issue a certificate to acknowledge successful completion of the program, and provide official transcripts to you or your employer. All requests for transcripts must be in writing.

CERTIFICATION Many of our certificate courses are approved for VA education benefits by the Department of Veterans Service. For further information or to inquire about a specific certification course, call 706.507.8070. Military spouses may also use CAA or MyCAA funds for certain courses.
