Species: Group of organisms that can interbreed.
The more species in an ecosystem, the more stable and healthy the ecosystem.
BiodiversityBio= Life
Diverse= Different
Variety of life in one area; the # of species
in that area.
Check for Understanding• Where do you see the most
biodiversity?• Why do you think it has the most
biodiversity?• Where do you see the least
biodiversity?• Why do you think it has the least
biodiversity?
Measuring BiodiversitySpecies richness- # of
different speciesSpecies evenness- # of
individuals per speciesGenetic diversity- varieties of
individuals in a species
Which has more Species Richness?

Natural Threats
Biodiversity lessens the threat
Higher chance for survival
Only some would die but the rest of the species would live.
Genetics of certain individuals allow it to survive better. They will have offspring.
Predation, Natural
Catastrophes, Social Changes
and Genetic Inconsistencies can kill a whole
species or a large group of
individuals.
Without Biodiversity
Extinction would occur Loss of resources (food,
medicine, shelter)
What threatens Biodiversity?
Limited resources- not enough for everyone
Overexploitation- killing or harvesting and over selling
Introduction of non-native species.
These are things that are lessening our biodiversity
amongst living and nonliving organisms
