Food for Thought Newsletter #5 – February 2011 Back from Pamplona First of all, thank you so much, Igor! We had a wonderful time in Pamplona and we all appreciated your hospitality. We would also like to say thank you to Martxello, your wife, the teachers and the heads of your school for spending so much time with us and showing us around Pamplona and San Sebastian. It is great to see that everybody shows a lot of interest in our work. It is so heartening! Once again, in one week, we shared so much and we definitely look forward to the next meeting in Waregem! Did you read the paper? The day after we left Pamplona, Igor sent us an article that was published in the local newspaper. If you would like your students to read the article (in Spanish), it will be published on the website, too. Of course, the article, the address of the site and  this  newsletter  can  be  given  to  all  our students. A link to the Food for Thought pages should be added on our schools' websites so that everybody can learn more about our project and what the students do. Huge meeting in Waregem! 180 students from Belgium, Finland, France, Norway, Spain and Turkey working and having fun together? This is what COMENIUS is all about! As you can imagine, organising such a meeting is a lot of work. Please, make sure that you have sent Lieven all the information that he needs. The event will take place from March 20 th to March 27 th . Lieven needs to know what time the different delegations plan to arri ve. On the first day, the students will introduce themselves and speak about their schools for about two minutes. They will also speak about three of their recipes. At the end of the week (on Friday) they will be divided into 22 groups of eight students and they will cook together. Each group will be hosted by a Belgian family. The five recipes chosen by each country and the glossary (with ten expressions) have to be sent to Belgium by the end of February, too. If any of your students suffer from allergies, please mention it. In addition to these presentations and cooking sessions, our students will visit various places including Brussels, Brugge and food companies.

Flemish students in Vasa

Fifteen Belgian students arrived in Finland on February 20th.It has been quite cold in Belgium in the past few days, but itwas much colder in Finland as the temperature was about-25 degrees in the morning and -10 degrees in the afternoon!

Yet these winter days in Vasa were enjoyably sunny.

The theme of food was central during the week. The studentsspoke  about  their  towns,  schools,  school  lunches  andnational dishes. They also organised an exhibition so thateveryone could learn more about traditional food in Belgiumand Finland.

They visited various places such as the Kvarken NaturalWorld Heritage site and the open air museum of Stundars, where food was prepared according to the traditions of theearly 20th century.

Not only did the students speak about nutrition, healthy food, and the ingredients they use tocook their regional and national dishes but they also cooked together.

They even learnt more about the other partners of the Food for Thought programme as theschool lunch served on Monday represented all the six countries of the project!

This month's artist

Émile  Zola  wrote   that  this  was   Édouard  Manetgreatest painting but when it was exhibited in Paris in

1863, it was the subject of much controversy and itshocked people a lot.

The two men – dressed like 19 th-century students of the Bourgeoisie – are talking together and the nakedwoman sitting with them is the only character who islooking at us as if asking us to join them. In the basketof food, there are mainly apples, the forbidden fruit...
