Tata Steel deployed its structural design expertise and worldwide technical and logistical resources for this high-tech new banking headquarters in the fast growing city of Hyderabad, India.

The new ICICI Bank HQ is 25 storeys high, with an enormous total floor area of four million square feet.

It is a powerful symbol of a sea change in construction techniques in India.

Cost and installation time savings were achieved using 162,000m2 of ComFlor® 80 composite floor decking and 10,000 tonnes of BS4 sections, meeting tight project deadlines.

The rapidly developing economy of India isperhaps most obviously reflected in its everchanging and increasingly impressivecityscapes.

Nowhere is this trend more evident than inthe city of Hyderabad. Home to over fourmillion people, it is the capital and the mostpopulous city of the southern state ofAndhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad is a shining example of theincredible progress made by India in recenttimes. Often referred to as “Cyderabad”, it isa major hub for the burgeoning informationtechnology, biotechnology andpharmaceutical industries.

Banking is now high on the list of keysectors served by Hyderabad, especiallyafter the construction of what is now India’slargest steel-framed structure - a newheadquarters for the country’s leadingprivate sector bank - ICICI Bank - located inthe city’s financial district.

Designed by architects Hafeez Contractor, the building is 25 storeys high, with anenormous total floor area of four millionsquare feet.

In addition to its impressive, high-tech,glazed facade and sheer magnitude, theICICI headquarters is also a powerful symbolof a sea change in construction techniquesin India.

Concrete has been the traditional buildingmaterial of choice for large-scale projects. But demand is increasing for moreaffordable, yet taller, buildings with flexiblespace and ever faster installation speed.India’s new wave of designers and structuralengineers are therefore embracing moremodern, high strength, low weightconstruction methods, with spectacularresults.

In this heady environment, steel-framedconstruction is coming into its own. TataSteel was able to demonstrate its suitabilityby providing 162,000m2 of ComFlor® 80composite floor decking and 10,000 tonnesof BS4 sections to the new bankheadquarters in Hyderabad.

ComFlor® 80 is the next generation ofprofiled steel composite decks. Its large corner curvature detail provides a very efficient profile, which ensures typical unpropped spans of 4.2m simply supported and, in the continuous condition, spans of 5.0m can be achieved.

The large spans achievable with ComFlor®80 mean less structural steel is used. Thisprovides savings in the overall constructioncost, which also offers more scope toarchitects and engineers in the designprocess.

With involvement from the earliest designstages for the new ICICI headquarters, TataSteel assisted the design and engineeringteams in achieving a tailored, total packagesolution.

A cost and work analysis programme wasprepared, to demonstrate the benefits ofthe ComFlor® 80 decking and the steelframe as a complete system. Tata Steel proved the advantages of faster construction in producing an earlier returnon investment, cost-savings from reducedsteel in large span structures and lessconcrete on decking and other savings. These included reduced and less skilledlabour, temporary formwork, reinforcementand prop hire.

The structural proposals became a keyfeature of the entire project submission. They were an excellent demonstration that,in general, steel compared with concreteallows architects to be much more flexiblein design, facilitating much taller buildings.

Richard Lankshear of Tata Steel explainedhow the package was delivered in practice:“We provided the decking and sectionspackage and multi-sourced to meet therequirements and strict delivery schedule.

“Following our original guidance with thedesign, from concrete to a steel-framedbuilding and the proposal for ComFlor®decking, we provided all floor deckinglayout drawings for the floors, usingComFlor® 80 as an extra service.

“We provided the cutting lists for thedecking and shipped it to Mumbai port withtime-coordinated containers.”
