PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS

HARMONY DAY This week’s value that our school is focusing on is: Safety. Our students will be follow the rule: I respect cultural differ-ences. Students will develop skills and understanding of being tolerant and fair and to accept and acknowledge differ-ences in other. Our behaviour focus links with Harmony Day. Harmony Day will be held this year on Thursday 14

th March to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the

Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. It’s a day to celebrate Austral-ia’s diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. This Thursday, our school will celebrate Harmony Day with a special parade. We want to take this opportunity to recog-nise and thank all of the communities and people who make our school such a fantastic place to come and learn. You are all welcome to attend our special parade this Thursday 14

th March (9 – 10am) in the school hall.

SOCIALISATION Schools provide an important opportunity for your children to practice and refine their skills in ‘getting along with others’ while achieving their education. We are all part of Darling Heights State School and we all have a vested interest in en-suring our school community is happy and healthy. We are a community of people all working towards the same goal; the education and socialisation of our children. Research clearly indicates the importance of the development of a partnership approach between parents and schools to learning and school attendance, to ensure children achieve to their ability. The playground environment and the classroom are areas which both provide their own socialisation challenges and it is important for parents to feel confident in approaching the school to discuss issues of concern. Some tips for problem solving in partnership with schools:

Listen clearly to your child’s concerns.

Encourage them to think of things they can do to remedy the situation.

Avoid absenteeism as a solution – this teaches that running away from problems is a valid solution.

Make a time to see your child’s teacher to discuss the issue. If necessary, also make an appointment with the Principal or Deputy.

Avoid blaming – state your concerns clearly.

Work in partnership with the teacher to decide how best to support the situation, looking at the problem from all sides, considering all options and making a time for review.

Remember, the school is a dynamic people community with thousands of social interactions occurring daily. It is only nat-ural that there will be occasions when there are socialisation issues. Schools are about ensuring the safety and happi-ness of every child and are only too happy to work with parents to quickly resolve an issue or concern. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the week ’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements (Deputy Principal) on 4636 8333.

SENIOR NEWS Camp is filling up fast with over half of the 80 spots taken. To avoid disappointment you need to send in your deposit as soon as possible. Please make sure your child is dressed in their national dress or orange on Thursday for Harmony Day. The more national costumes we have, of course, the better the pa-rade will be! Finally, we’d like to remind parents to make sure that your child is bringing their diary to school every day so that we can acknowledge their good work with passport stamps. Furthermore, participation in interschool sports is for Star Students who make great behaviour choices in the class-room and playground as well as on the sporting field. SCHOOL TIMES This year, we have an even greater expectation that chil-dren will be at school on time, ready to start their day. School starts at 8.45am.

Lateness not only disrupts the learning of individual chil-dren, it also disrupts teachers and other students as those who are late need to catch up on what they have missed. It is important that all parents realise that children need to be at school for the maximum amount of time available to ensure quality learning can occur. Any absence can have an impact on a child’s overall learning so please remember that school finishes at 3.00pm. However, in the event that you need to collect your child/ren during the school day please remember that we will endeavour to locate them but this can be very difficult dur-ing break times and during Friday afternoon sport.
