Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students
Mother Mary Aikenhead (1787-1858) who founded the Religious Sisters of Charity in 1815, was declared Venerable by Pope Francis on 18 March 2015. Being declared Venerable is the second of four steps in the Catholic Church’s canonisation process towards sainthood. A person is declared Venerable when it is established by the Church that the person had “practised virtue to an heroic degree”.
It is important for us as a school founded by the Sisters of Charity to recognise this anniversary and I share with you a reflection provided by Dr Tessa Ho, for and behalf of the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
At the age of 14 years, Mary heard Bishop McCarthy of Cork preach at Mass on the parable of the rich man Dives and the destitute man Lazarus who used to lie at Dives’ gate. In her recent biography of Mary Aikenhead, Sr Rosaleen Crossan RSC in her 2016 book ‘Friend of the Poor -Mary Aikenhead: Woman of Vision, Commitment and Inspiration’ described the impact of this encounter on Mary:
Mary was very struck by the story of the rich man who wallowed in his luxuries and totally ignored the poor man at his gate, never sharing with him even a crumb from his table…We can well imagine that Mary, living as she was in relative luxury, and at the same time witnessing many starving poor on the streets around her in the city [Cork], took deeply to hear the message from Jesus that the poor are God’s favoured children and the rich have an obligation to share their blessings with them. Small wonder that Mary’s raison d’etre for the congregation of Sisters of Charity would later be: ‘To give to the poor what the rich can buy for money’. This parable of the rich man and Lazarus was to define the rest of Mary’s life.
Our Mt St Michael’s community joins with Mary Aikenhead Ministries in prayer.

Gracious God, Mary Aikenhead responded whole-heartedly to your call to serve the poor. She is a source of inspiration to us as we seek to continue her tradition of loving service through our ministries. We ask that we too may be impelled by the love of Christ so that we are faithful to her spirit of sevice. Through our commitment to ministry, we seek to honour Mary Aikenhead and make her better known in our ministries and the Australian community. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen.
The Mother Daughter High Tea held on Friday 10 March was a fantastic celebration with the Sophia Centre packed to capacity with 667 mothers and daughters sitting at 63 tables. Thank you to our inspirational key speakers, Clare Ryan (College Captain) and Genevieve Fraser (past student) who both spoke passionately about the theme of International Women’s Day “Be Bold for Change”.
The photographs included in this edition of The Spirit beautifully capture some of the special moments of the afternoon. A huge thank you to Mrs Jenny Kemp and Mrs Leanne Mead for their overall organisation and to the many parent volunteers who supported the organising committee whether it was the generous donations of home baking and sweet treats, setting up or cleaning up after the event. A very special thank you to Mr Ben Sankey and the Dad’s Army who so graciously waited on us. The support of families and local business in supplying raffle donations was overwhelming and we also acknowledge their contributions and sincerely thank them in this newsletter. Finally, thank you to our many staff who supported the event by either attending with their daughters or who assisted with the many “behind the scenes” tasks.
I extend my best wishes to all of our students who are currently participating in exams. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
As this is the last Spirit for the term, I wish everyone a Blessed Easter and a safe and relaxing Easter holiday.
In faith and loveSharon VolpPrincipal
Congratulations

Ministry Care
Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we will continue with our Ministry Care Programme in 2017.
We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.
The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.
During the course of 2016 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.
If you would like to contribute to the Ministry Care Programme and support those who are going through difficult times, please contact Stephen Campion on [email protected]
2017 Women in AviAtion QAntAS And BriSBAne domeStic Airport
From magnetic compass to career compass! The inaugural Aviation Careers Day for Young Women was purely about professional women volunteering to 'give back', by showcasing an exciting array of Aviation industry disciplines to the next generation of young women. Mt St Michael’s students met commercial and military pilots, aircraft engineers, air traffic control, air safety investigation officers and aircraft manufacturing mangers.

Following International Women's Day, and in the throes of International Women in Aviation Week, 80 female high school students from over 20 schools in the greater Brisbane area began their journey to explore what a career in aviation can look like.
The morning session involved the young women visiting one of three locations around Brisbane Airport. Mt St Michael’s students experienced cockpit and exterior aircraft tours of an Airbus A330 in maintenance at Qantas Hangar 3.

The Careers Day continued at the Brisbane Domestic Terminal where the students participated in an aviation forum session. This allowed students to listen to the stories of women who were passionate about their aviation careers and how they managed their career and study pathway.
“I was lucky enough to participate in the Women in Aviation day on Thursday 9th March and gain a real insight into life as an aviation professional in many fields. My interest in becoming a pilot became more focused after the day, and I am now much more aware of ways to achieve my aviation goals. The women were incredibly inspirational and helpful and gave me much more confidence in myself and achieving my dreams in the future.” Claire Dempsey Year 11
“The Aviation Careers day for young women was a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. We were able to see firsthand what it is like to have a career in aviation. I was able to talk to a woman with a career as an airhostess and it truly inspired me. I now am certain what I want to do and how to achieve it in the future thanks to this experience. It was a great day and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.” Gretel Mahoney Year 11

This month, fifteen Year 10 and Year 11 students, responded to an invitation to participate in a career excursion to the Radio Station 106.9 in Brisbane.
On arrival, students were greeted with “Welcome Mt St Michael’s College” on every large plasma screen in the foyer. We heard about ways into the industry through internships and part-time jobs through “street team roles” while studying at University. National career opportunities in Business, Public Relations, Music Direction, Sales and Marketing, Production and Engineering were also explored.
The students were fortunate enough to meet the morning Breakfast team (Ash, Kip and Luttsy with Susie O’Neill). Two lucky students Madeleine Riddle (Year 10) and Sophia Jones (year 11) got to sit in the announcers chair and engage in live radio discussion. Attached are the MP3 files for your enjoyment.

Seeking nominations for Annual Catholic Campaign Ambassadors
The 2017 Annual Catholic Campaign will commence in August across the Archdiocese with the final Weekend to be held on 9-10 September.
Funds raised by the Catholic Campaign support the good works of the Church and social justice needs in our local community. It raises funds to support Catholic social services, educate seminarians, care for elderly and disabled priests and provide bursaries to children in impoverished circumstances to attend Catholic school. Much of the success of the Catholic Campaign relies heavily on the time and support of individuals and families who serve as Ambassadors over the 6 week program.
We are currently seeking volunteers to serve as Ambassadors for the Annual Catholic Campaign in August-September 2017 to oversee the fundraising logistics at the local parish which may include briefly speaking at Mass. Ambassador training will be provided and a certificate from Archbishop Coleridge is awarded at the end of the Campaign. If students (or families for children under the age of 16) or staff are interested in serving in this important role you can sign up by registering online below or contact Lesley Williams at the Catholic Foundation at [email protected] or 07 3240 3290.
