We also remembered in our prayers those families who were affected by other natural disasters which beset our country over the Christmas break through floods, fires and cyclones. I believe that it important that our children offer their prayers for others in such times as it serves to remind them that we are part of a bigger global community – one which they witness daily through television and newspapers – and that there is a God who looks over us all. I know from personal recounts that these prayers are certainly appreciated – maybe it is something that yourselves as families may offer in your home from time to time. Part of our Christian calling is the ideal of reaching out to others to spread the news of God‘s Kingdom and this is one very simple way in which we can do this. My School Website Mark 2 This website goes live this Friday after a few hiccups which have delayed its arrival. It has been interesting to note that not one sector of education – Catholic, State and Independent – has given the new format the complete tick of approval. The website is looking to offer transparency and comparisons to parents on matters such as student performance and this year, financial data, in a sector which doesn‘t simply lend itself to such transparency and comparisons. There have already been many anomalies in the Index of Community Socio Educational Advantage (ICSEA) ratings and how these ratings work – you may remember that last year our school of over 1000 children was compared to a hinterland school of just under 100 – there are major difficulties with making such comparisons. This year‘s introduction of per capita income and expenditure per student financial information is also fraught with a number of pitfalls and I‘m sure that many of these will be played out in the print and televised media over the next few weeks. Already there are television advertisements from one education sector which target the ‗supposed‘ inequity between state and federal government funding for schools. These advertisements whilst not telling untruths do not tell the whole story of funding to Australian schools. At our March P. & F. meeting (14 March) I will outline to the meeting the real story of how funding works for Queensland schools so as to give parents a more balanced view. As a Catholic school we do take these websites seriously and we do utilise components of their data eg NAPLAN (which we already have on our school‘s website). We do however, urge parents not to be completely reliant on this tool as it does not report on the many intangibles of what makes a school effective. There are no rankings or scales for instance on the Catholic spirit or ethos of the school or on the caring nature of our teachers and staff or on the wonderful input and support we have from our parent body. Catholic Swimming Carnival – Friday, 4 March This Friday we will be sending a squad of children from 8 to 13 year old to the annual Catholic Swimming Carnival which is being held at Pizzey Park at Miami. All children competing for our school would have received notes as to times, transport and events for the day. Quite a number of them have been putting in extra practice at school over the last couple of weeks, and in particular we would like to thank our Year 7 children who have been helping to co-ordinate some of our younger children for the day. My best wishes go our team for the carnival – it is a great fun day and it is good to join with our colleagues from the other Catholic schools across the Coast for the day. Ash Wednesday – Next week – 9 March The church‘s season of Lent commences next week with Ash Wednesday being celebrated across the world. Each of the classes will hold their own liturgy next Wednesday and the children will receive the ashes during this time. We will receive our school ashes from the parish mass at 7.00am and then bring them to our assembly for a short prayer and distribution to the classes. I have detailed the parish mass times for next Wednesday so that our parents may be able to find time to attend one of these celebrations. continued over... Last week I wrote about control and resilience as penned by Hugh Mackay in What Makes us Tick. Andrew Fuller (well acclaimed Australian psychologist) concurs with Mackay in his article ―Promoting Resilience in your Child‖ (Coast Kids: Issue 2, February 2011). He makes the point that we cannot control life‘s experiences, but we certainly can control our responses to the experiences. He argues that it is a joint role of both parents and teachers to help children respond to difficult situations with strength and a positive outlook. Resilience is a part of our emotional intelligence. Resilient people tend to be solution-focused whilst those lacking in this form of intelligence, are more likely to become depressed or adopt a ―victim‖ mentality. Fuller likens this resolve to bungy jumping. No-one is spared the pitfalls or difficulties of life, but resilient people are able to bounce back as if an elasticized rope is wound around the midriff area enabling a ―happy knack‖ of bouncing back. The differing reactions of people facing the same dilemmas or difficulties, is dependent upon the way people respond and feel during the experience. Children need to learn that for every situation, there is a corresponding choice about what to do and also how to respond and feel. Throughout life, there are always options for consideration and our personal choice of these options will determine the outcome of how we feel and respond. A situation to illustrate this point has been very recently presented to some of our children in years 5 to 7, and their parents. For many children, last Friday was the day when inter-school sporting teams were announced. With any selections, some children were successful whilst others were not. Some children left the school feeling overjoyed, whilst others left feeling bitterly disappointed. Some children managed to handle their emotions well, accepting he disappointment and moving on to the consideration of other options for Friday sport. Reportedly, others were left somewhat overwhelmed and shattered by the experience.

The result of these school trials is a real life situation similar to that which can be expected to be replayed many times throughout life; whether it be with further sporting teams; class groupings; employment positions etc. A positive response from the children who were unsuccessful, is imperative in helping them be able to ―bungy jump‖ through other disappointments which may be faced later in life. A parent‘s reaction and ways of support at such times is critical to the building of resilience and problem-solving for the child. We know that parenting is not easy and it‘s particularly difficult when supporting a child after suffering a set-back. However, I applaud the many parents who are working with their children in accepting disappointments, such as was the case for some last Friday, or in class placements for the start of this year, in a positive way. The pain may be none the less, but the life-long lessons of accepting disappointments and building resilience are well worthwhile. Fuller proposes 7 tips for parents, to help children develop resilience: 1. Teach children to trust their instincts (gut feelings) 2. Teach flexibility (adjusting to different ideas and

situations) 3. Teach responsibility (take personal responsibility;

don‘t accept blaming some-one else) 4. Teach emotions (use emotional words, e.g. ―I don‘t

like it,‖ for expressions of feelings) 5. Teach positive focus (find the good in every

situation) 6. Teach gratitude (focus on what we have rather than

on what they don‘t have) 7. Level expectations ((set realistic expectations in

relation to age and developmental stage) Have a great week Annette OShea

Preparatory Enrolments 2012 We are now calling for enrolments for Preparatory classes for 2012. Many of our parents have already filled out an application form for their prospective ―Preppies‖ but I am aware that there are still many not yet submitted. If your wish for your child to be part of our great school in Prep next year, please contact the Administration Office and complete and submit your Application for Enrolment form. Chil-dren eligible for Preparatory in 2012 need to have been born between 1 July 2006 and 30 June 2007. Applications close at the end of Term 1, 2010.

Long Term Absences Parents who wish to exclude their children from school for more than 10 days must complete an application for an Exemption from Compulsory Schooling (Non--state schools) form. The Education General Provisions Act 2036 mandates that all absences of longer than 10 days, other than for medical reasons, must be approved by the Principal of the school and be of sound educational grounds. The application is located as a link on the school website in the Policies menu under Absence from School.

Ash Wednesday Mass Times Burleigh Heads—7.00am Miami—9.00am Palm Beach—5.30pm Mudgeeraba—5.15pm Congratulations Congratulations to Jackson Elliott, Year 7 teacher and School Cross Country and Athletics coach who is the Queensland Open Five Kilometre Champion. At last Friday night‘s titles he convincingly won the title in a rather unbelievable time to most of us, of 14.04 seconds. This is an amazing achievement given that Jackson is not a full-time professional athlete but rather a teacher who trains around school hours. We also thank Jackson for the generosity of offering his time and expertise to our children before and after school for free. We wish him good luck in his future endeavours. Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of the week. Yours in Christ

Keep Our Children Safe We are still having many issues with parents dropping off and picking up children in the wrong areas. Please be aware that these rules are in place for the safety of your children! There are 2 main areas within the school where

children can be picked up or dropped off each day. These are Sunlight Drive and the main car park/bus area off Reedy Creek Road.

The road that accesses the Primary and College

Administrations is not to be used to pick up or drop off children at any time of the day. A number of parents are still parking here.

Please also be aware that NO parents should be

parked in or drive through the area where the buses pick up children.

The gate to the College (near the ovals) should not be

used by parents in the afternoons. There is a lot of traffic coming out of the College and any cars entering this road cause a major bottle neck.

Footpaths, grassed areas, and those marked with

yellow lines are non-parking areas. The police or GCCC can/will book cars parked in these areas.

Class Patron Parents 2011 We are pleased to have our volunteers who have offered to be Patron Parent for their child‘s class. Some have undertaken this role in the past while others are new to the experience. We are most grateful to all of them for their participation in building community and encouraging networks of parents to grow and flourish. The role of Patron Parent is primarily a pastoral one – one of welcoming and fostering relationships on behalf of families. They make themselves available to answer simple queries about the school or point others in the direction of the person who can provide information. Many will organise family or parent gatherings during the coming months in order to provide opportunities for parents to get to know each other. Photos of the class Patron Parent/s will be displayed on each classroom door along with a more detailed explanation of the role. Please be in touch with the office if you would like to make contact with your Patron Parent. The first gathering of Patron Parents for 2010 is to be held on Friday 12 March at 9am in the staffroom. Enjoy the rest of the week Bernadette Christensen

A REMINDER TO SLOP ON THE SUNCREAM! We have great success here at Marymount with our ‗no hat - no play‘ policy. This policy is enforced by teachers, our Leadership team and sometimes even other students! However, hats are just one way we can protect our skin in the harsh Queensland sun. Don‘t forget to slop on some suncream each day before school. Make it part of the usual morning routine and your skin will thank you in years to come! Suncream doesn‘t protect all day long so reapply during the day. Small bottles of suncream are readily available from retail outlets and are the perfect size to pop in school bags. Please note that students who participate in school sporting competitions, including Friday sport, are provided with sunscreen as part of our Workplace Health and Safety obligations. For more information on personal sun protection, visit the Queensland Cancer Council website at: h t t p : / / w w w . c a n c e r q l d . o r g . a u / i cms_docs/53645_Personal_Protection.pdf
