Twenty years ago, Paul G. Allen began acquiring and preserving iconic armor and vintage planes from World War II. His father served in the European theater, and Mr. Allen’s collection eventually included all the primary combatants of that era: the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, Germany, and Japan.

Restoration over the years has been extensive inside and out using period materials, with a dedication to unparalleled authenticity to share with the public. As Mr. Allen noted in his 2011 memoir, Idea Man, “Some are the only models of their kind in existence.”

Ten years later, in 2008, the Flying Heritage Collection opened its doors at Paine Field in Everett, WA, showcasing 14 warplanes in pristine condition, most of them ready to go up, up and away during the museum’s fly days.

“I feel uplifted by the beauty of those machines,” Mr. Allen wrote in his memoir, “and their watershed technology.”

In 2017, the museum name changed to the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum. This reflected Mr. Allen’s growing collection that included tanks and other armored vehicles, military artifacts and interactive displays, such as the Why War exhibit that provides context around world conflicts.

A Need for Speed 45 MPH: That was the maximum speed

of the M3A1 Half-Track Personnel Carrier, which was important at the time because as tanks became faster and more mobile, soldiers needed to keep up in supporting these modern, mechanized attack forces.

The vehicle could hold 11 soldiers and a crew of two, and was protected by .25”-thick

armor as well as manually-operated radiator shutters that shielded the half-track’s simple six-cylinder engine and vulnerable radiator. The White Motor Company of Cleveland, Ohio built this

vehicle, and also produced before World War II steam cars, gas-powered automobiles, trucks and railcars. During wartime, the company built more than 24,000 trucks and half-tracks.

The World’s Finest Collection of Vintage Planes and Tanks With a third hangar scheduled to open late summer, there’s a

lot to see, do and learn at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum. Be sure to go to FlyingHeritage.org for information, photos, videos and more about this interesting and engaging museum.

As Mr. Allen noted in his memoir about the vintage aircraft, “Seeing them takes me back to my boyhood plastic kit model warplanes, which I’d glue together and paint with just the right camouflage markings.”

Stop by the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum booth and see the historic M3A1 Half-Track Personnel Carrier up close. Ask questions and take lots of photos.

Try your luck and spin the prize wheel for a chance to win awesome prizes. Ask about museum memberships. And pick up an event schedule listing their air shows, tank demonstrations, and more.
