FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome to Mrs Sally Conn our newly appointed College Principal. Sally, formerly the Principal at Wadalba High School brings a wealth of experience to the College and I look forward to working with her. It has been a busy start to the term with NAIDOC celebrations, Year 10/11 parent-teacher evening and the commencement of our Year 9 into 10 transition program. Senior course selections for Year 10 has also begun and to ensure students receive accurate information we have organised class meetings and an after school course expo to provide an opportunity for parents and students to discuss course options with staff. Students will also be involved in an individual interview with staff to discuss the selection process and issues. Senior course selections are always a difficult time for students and it is important that students collect detailed information and advice. We are fortunate that we have an experienced Careers Advisor in Ms Beemster to provide assistance and she is well supported by our Year Advisors, our Transition Coordinator and all staff. Important Year 10 course selection dates are:

Wed 31st July - Subject expo for parents and students. 4.00-6.30pm in the hall.

Thurs 1st Aug - seminar information day for students to finalise selections Thurs 8th Aug - electronic subject selection by students Thurs 5th Sept. - interview day. Regular classes are cancelled and booking times allocated to students for individual

interviews.

In a few weeks Year 12 will start their trial HSC. This will be their last assessment and will leave just 4 weeks left of lesson time. We have stressed to all Year 12 students the importance of these last few weeks to finalise content, revision and exam practice. It is essential students attend every lesson to maximise their opportunity to succeed. Our Year 12 farewell assembly will be held on Thursday 20th August.

What is Wheels for a Day ? Wheels for a Day is an educational, community team building and fundraising event for schools, focusing on spinal cord injury and

disability awareness. Would you like to have fun while learning what it’s like to

have a physical disability and be in a wheel chair for a day?

Wheels for a Day highlights the challenges faced when people are in a wheelchair. Students can learn about

accessibility, prevention and how to include people with a disability in activities. People are invited to use a

wheelchair to complete a day at school in a wheelchair. If you are interested, please see Ms Tesch (HSIE) or

Jackson Tumpey (Year 12) in the Library. There will also be games of wheelchair basketball on Wednesday 24th

July for selected classes.

SUPPORT UNIT ON THE GO The Support Unit had a very busy and successful Term 2. Many of our students completed work experience at a variety of workplaces such as a local nursery, fast food outlets and supported employment organisations. This has been an invaluable experience for the students teaching them about the opportunities and expectations of life after school- we are very grateful to the employers for their assistance. Other students visited post school service providers and TAFE discovering what learning opportunities are available once they finish school and a large group of students successfully completed a retail course run through Hornsby TAFE.

Our local Member of Parliament, Deb O’Neil came and conducted a flag raising ceremony after presenting us with our new flags. We also had ten students go on camp to Stewart House for a week. The students had a fantastic time visiting many of Sydney’s attractions such as the Zoo, Aquarium and Darling Harbour. A big thank you must go out to Mrs Rogers for her time and patience throughout the week. Now we are preparing for another exciting Term ahead.
