At BIMM, we want to help you generate an income from music. BIMM works with reputable agencies, session fixers and record labels – all of whom are approved and vetted by us – to offer paid work to our students and graduates.
The Commercial Performance Programme doesn’t just apply to musicians and performers, but also to sound engineers, tour managers, DJs and event managers. In fact, you’ll very likely develop skills in many areas outside of your current studies!
Commercial Performance involves many different areas of the music industry. It simply means getting paid for using your hard-won skills outside of your own original music. This includes (but is not limited to) the following capacities:
Session musicians Functions and covers bands Hotel residencies Pit and theatre work DJs and live sound engineers Musical directors
BIMM’s Commercial Performance Manager can help you discuss and develop all areas of your Commercial Performance career. This includes:
A&R/showcase preparation, development and feedback One-to-one individual and band development tutorials Networking/meet and greets Masterclasses and seminars Business and commercial band management advice
BIMM is regularly contacted by representatives from many areas of the music industry who are seeking students for paid performance services. The Commercial Performance Programme aims to prepare and fast-track you to make the most of these. We also ensure you take home a competitive rate of pay in-line with Musicians’ Union guidelines.
The Commercial Performance Programme is part of BIMM’s Work Based Learning offering to all students. This means that BIMM does not take a cut or commission on any of your earnings; we’re simply here to ensure you’re rewarded for your skills.

Sometimes there’s a stigma around commercial performance work. Some believe it lacks the integrity of original music; others take issue to performing other artists’ material. However, for professional musicians, it’s a no-brainer:

BIMM is delighted to be working with the UK’s biggest private events agency, Alive Network, to offer special employment opportunities to BIMM students.
The Alive-BIMM partnership will help BIMM students earn and learn as artists and members of function bands. You’ll get paid for your talent and will also kick-start your full-time career in music.
Be fast-tracked on to Alive Network’s Management and Development Programme; the best scheme of its kind in
the UK – including £7k worth of promo and management, and production in one of the UK’s best privately owned
studios.
Earn money playing regular gigs – while you learn, when you graduate and beyond. Students with a rock/pop/
indie repertoire regularly perform over 60 gigs a year and receive gig fees upwards of £200 per musician per gig.
Get a foot in the door of the music industry now, instead of worrying ‘what next?’ when you graduate.
Get paid to do what you love, not what you’re forced to do to make ends meet.
Weekend function gigs allow musicians the time in the week to focus on other projects.Many session musicians kick-start their career as covers musicians.It’s ideal for networking with other BIMM students and graduates, as well as external professionals.Regular public performance allows musicians to remain at the top of their game.It utilises your skills to earn money from music.It enables you to perform, supplement and develop your musicality alongside your existing originals projects.

HOW WILL IT WORK?Firstly, if you enter this programme, don’t expect to see results overnight. We expect students to be receptive to feedback and understand what is necessary in order to get to the stage of earning an income.
AGENCY SHOWCASES:BIMM holds regular showcases with Alive Network, and occasionally other agencies, in order to fast-track students to rosters. These will usually take place in a three-stage process:
1 Five-track/20 minute initial showcase 2 One hour follow-up showcase 3 One-hour final showcase and pre-production
Feedback, next steps and support from Alive Network and BIMM is available throughout every stage in this process, and we’ll track your development to ensure you have every resource available to be successful.
SESSION OPPORTUNITIES: BIMM works with various session fixers, labels and TV companies to generate session opportunities. Heads of Department nominate students they feel are suitable for the session performances as and when the work comes in. If you’re nominated, we require your Music CV featuring:
