The Volkswagen California Beach and SE are the latest additions to the unrivalled heritage of Volkswagen campervans.

Unlike many campervans which are essentially conversions based on the Transporter window van, the California is unique as Volkswagen’s original, full factory-designed and produced campervan. Volkswagen is the only vehicle manufacturer to produce its own campervan. It benefits from the expertise and production standards given to every other Volkswagen model, and is the only recreational vehicle of its sort available officially in the UK with full European Whole Vehicle Type Approval.

Apart from its great design and high quality, the California is compact and convenient enough to be used as an everyday vehicle, yet

easily turns into a home from home for days out, weekend escapes or longer adventures.

Home from homeThe California is offered in two variants: the entry-level Beach without kitchen facilities; and the range-topping SE with everything on board for the adventurous traveller’s home on the move, including the kitchen sink...

The current California launched in the UK in 2010. Key design features include:

a distinctive front end, bringing it in line with Volkswagen passenger cars; aerodynamic door mirrors; and a range of enhancements to the instruments, steering wheel and front seats.

High equipment levelsSafety features include daytime running lights; the latest ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme); and optional ‘lane change assist’ that alerts the driver to any other traffic in or approaching the blind spot.

Power comes from three derivatives of the same 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. All variants have BlueMotion Technology as standard to maximise fuel efficiency. A five- or six-speed manual gearbox is standard, depending on specification, while DSG seven-speed transmission is available with the 140PS and 180PS engines. Volkswagen’s 4MOTION four-wheel drive is offered on the SE.

History

The iconic camper van joined the Transporter line-up in 1951 but it wasn’t until the 1960s when it was adopted by a free-spirited generation. It became a cult symbol of an alternative lifestyle

and images of vans painted in psychedelic designs enthral to this day. The versatile, practical camper van captured the spirit of the times and has been the epitome of independent travel ever since.

And those 60 years of experience runs through the latest generation of Volkswagen campers – the California SE and California Beach.

Inspired by the past, built for today, the Volkswagen California introduces new standards of comfort, performance and safety, thanks to its modern purpose-built design and superb engineering. But the ethos remains the same. The latest evolution of Volkswagen’s iconic camper van still symbolises the fun, freedom and adventure that was such an appealing quality of the much-loved original. The ability to go where you please, when you please is as relevant today as it was in the 1950s – maybe even more so. Yes, there are those who love the nostalgia, but the appeal of the California lies across a generation.

Whether it’s a family camping holiday, a festival weekend, or a voyage of discovery road trip, the Volkswagen camper van gives you the freedom of the open road and provides a place to relax, eat and sleep. Travel is not just about the destination, it’s about getting there, too.

1949 The first ever Volkswagen Transporter van is launched at the Geneva Motor Show, with its distinctive smiling face.

1951 The Volkswagen Transporter is developed into the iconic camper.

1960s The camper van is adopted by the hippie generation, becoming a cult symbol of an alternative lifestyle.

1967 Second generation Transporter, known as the T2, does away with the classic, ‘splittie’ (split windscreen) design and introduces panoramic vision, gaining the nickname ‘Bay’.

1979 The T2 becomes the T3, introducing a more angular design

1990 The Transporter turns 40 and the fourth generation, T4, Transporter is launched.

2003 The fifth generation T5 Transporter launches to critical acclaim and provides the basis for the latest Volkswagen California camper van.

2013 Volkswagen California celebrates its 25th anniversary, with around 100,000 California camper vans rolling off the production line since the start of production. Production of the T2 campervan ceases in Brazil.

Adventure on wheels: California exterior design

The California is a multi-purpose, recreational vehicle designed without compromise. Honed to perfection

over five decades, the current version is the best-equipped and most practical to date. Easy to use every day but with the ability to transform into a campervan and a home from home on the road, it represents over 50 years of development.

Externally, unless the optional awning is fitted, there is little to indicate the California’s dual purpose. It shares many design elements with the acclaimed Volkswagen Caravelle, and thanks to clever integration of features, such as the pop-up roof that sits flush to the original roofline when folded, it has a smooth, uncluttered appearance. At 1995mm, the California is only 25mm higher than a Caravelle.

In terms of styling features, the latest California is easily identified with its new frontal styling in line with the latest Volkswagen passenger cars, such as the Polo and Golf.

For added safety, the headlights feature daytime running lights. Below this, the

new front bumper includes the option of fog lights with integrated cornering-light function to illuminate the direction in which the vehicle is turning.

Aerodynamic powered, heated and folding door mirrors help contribute to improving fuel economy and minimising noise inside the new California. At the

rear, to identify the engines, the last letter of the TDI badge is red for the 140PS model, and for the range-topping 180PS BiTDI, the last two letters are red.

Optional front and rear parking sensors can help prevent body damage when manoeuvring, and for even more visibility a reversing camera is an optional extra.

The California is whatever the customer requires, whether that’s a family car, mobile office or

recreational vehicle. Its versatile, well designed and high-quality interior can fulfil all these functions in one neat package. You can sleep, eat and hang out in the Beach, while the SE adds external power hook-up plus a kitchenette with running water and cooker.

Designed for life on the roadUnlike larger, more cumbersome motorhomes, the California is designed to be a campervan that can be used as an everyday vehicle for all the regular trips a passenger car does, such as taking children to school or going to the supermarket or office, yet has an interior designed to function as a home from home on the road.

The California SE’s interior is a triumph of design and packaging, and fully showcases the Transporter’s adaptability.

The pop-up roof, kitchen with fridge, cooker and sink, two double beds, wardrobe and programmable heating system are all features usually reserved for high-end camper vans.

Discreet, integrated blinds on the side and rear windows in the living area, plus folding blinds for the front windows,

provide privacy while five LED spotlights and a fluorescent striplight are fully integrated into the interior design to provide illumination after dark. Flyscreens are provided for the sliding windows in the kitchen and sliding door. Storage space has been maximised cleverly. There is a large drawer unit

under the rear seat, two cupboards under the kitchen unit, a hanging rail in the wardrobe, a pull-down locker in the roof, and cupboard with removable shelves where the gas cylinder is housed, the 30-litre tank for fresh drinking water, and circuit breaker for the mains electricity supply.

Kitchen facilitiesThe wood-trimmed furniture is made of lightweight materials to minimise weight and, for maximum safety, is beautifully designed with curved rather than and sharp edges. Underneath the glass panel covering the kitchen unit is a two-burner gas hob with piezo ignition so there’s no need for matches or lighters. There is also an electrically operated 42-litre fridge (so it isn’t reliant on a gas supply), a sink with height-adjustable tap and electrically pumped running water, plus two large cupboards and a cutlery drawer. A table, attached to a rail on the front of the kitchen unit, slides out and can be conveniently positioned to provide extra workspace or somewhere to place drinks or food.

Both models’ front seats swivel to face the rear seats and create a lounge or dining area for four people, while the rear seat, which has ISOFIX fitting points, converts into a double bed measuring 1.14 x 2.00m. This is quickly achieved by simply folding the head restraints away, sliding the seat forward on the runners in

the floor, and reclining it flat to the level of the mattress behind.

A second, larger double bed (1.20 x 2.00 m) is housed in the pop-up roof. This has a slatted frame and padded mattress which provide a very comfortable night’s sleep. This area has its own reading light, mesh panels which can be unzipped for

extra ventilation or daylight, and a safety net in case smaller children are using the upper berths. When the upper bed is not being used it can be raised on its gas springs to provide the full height for standing in the living area.

on the central control panel above the rear-view mirror, while the roof is raised manually in the Beach. The SE’s control panel is multi-functional and also provides control and status checks of the battery charge level and capacity, switches the fridge on or off as well as controlling its temperature, displays the

outside temperature, the levels of the fresh and waste water tanks, and can be used to programme the California’s independent heating system.

Volkswagen has designed a versatile electrical system for the interior lighting and living equipment. There are two auxiliary batteries with cut-off relay for

powering the interior lighting and fridge to save flattening the California SE’s main engine battery. These are charged when the SE is being driven or if it is connected to an external 230V electrical hook-up. The interior has 12V and 230V power systems. By using the batteries to power the 12V system, it’s possible to camp independently, but by connecting to an external source (lead provided) higher powered electrical items can be used, and both 12V batteries charged.

Enjoying the great outdoorsKnowing that California users will want to make the most of the great outdoors, Volkswagen’s designers have incorporated storage for two deck chairs in a special, zipped compartment in the tailgate, and stored a freestanding table in the sliding side door.

The driver’s and passenger’s seat are multi-adjustable with side support and an integrated lumbar cushion. The gear lever is conveniently mounted on the dashboard to liberate space in the cab and create an unobstructed floor space. The leather, three-spoke steering wheel is adjustable for reach and rake. Integrated multifunction and radio controls are available, as is a 30 GB hard drive and the latest 6.5-inch colour touchscreen satellite navigation.

The California’s front seats swivel to face the rear seats and create a lounge or dining area for four people, while the rear seat, which has ISOFIX fitting points, converts into a comfy double bed measuring 1.14 x 2.00m.

A large number of handy and secure storage areas are provided in the dashboard and front doors, providing a home for all the paraphernalia of travelling. There is a fold-out cup holder for two drinks on the dashboard, as well as a range of easy-access tray areas with anti-slip inlays. Large drink bottles fit in a door panel compartment, and there is a lockable glovebox.

Adaptable luggage areaWhen there is a need to carry large loads in the California, the rear seats can be folded flat or removed altogether leaving a load area 2280 mm long. Upgrades available for the interior include Alcantara/leather seat covers, the superior ‘Climatronic’ three-zone electronically controlled air conditioning, a safe box in the base of the wardrobe and an additional single, folding, swivelling and removable passenger’s seat.

Standard seat options for California SE models include either a two- or three-seat rear bench. An additional one- or two-seats can be specified at an additional cost.

Heating systemVolkswagen’s designers have paid considerable attention to climate control and heating systems to ensure occupants are comfortable day or night. ‘Climatic’ air conditioning is standard with a dust and pollen filter and the more sophisticated ‘Climatronic’ electronically controlled air conditioning is a factory option for both the Beach and SE.

To keep the interior of the California warm while occupants are away from

the vehicle or if it is stationary, a parking heater is standard on all SE models and an option as part of the Driver Pack for the Beach. The parking heater has its own 80Ah battery and includes a timer function in the control panel above the rear-view mirror so it can be programmed to operate pretty much like a domestic heating system. However, it can also be operated by a remote control unit.

Refined performance: California drivetrains

Engines

The California is powered by an advanced 2.0-litre common rail turbodiesel engine. Offered with

three power outputs: 114PS, 140PS and 180PS, it has been developed to maximise fuel consumption, refinement and performance while minimising emissions and running costs.

All three engine variants offered in the California are fitted with BlueMotion technology features that optimise fuel efficiency and deliver low CO2 emissions (see page 37 for more information).

California engine availability• 114PS TDI (Beach only) • 140PS TDI (Beach and SE)• 180PS BiTDI (SE only)

2.0 TDI 114PS TDI The entry-level California engine is available only in the Beach variant, and strikes the perfect balance between performance, economy and value. Capable of returning 40.4mpg on the combined cycle, the 114PS engine can power the California from 0-62mph in 16.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 101mph. Equipped with BlueMotion technnology (see page 20 for more details), the 114PS engine has CO2 emissions of 184g/km.

2.0 TDI 140PS TDI The mid-range 140PS engine develops 340Nm between 1,750rpm to 2,500rpm. Thanks to this power, the engine can go from standstill to 62mph in 14.2 seconds and features a strong and flexible mid-range. Equipped with Volkswagen’s acclaimed BlueMotion technology as standard across the range, CO2 emissions start from 189g/km (manual, two-wheel drive models), while fuel consumption on

the combined cycle is 39.2mpg. This engine is also available with

DSG transmission that, unlike many automatics, does not seriously impact on performance, fuel economy or acceleration. With DSG the 140PS engine takes just 0.5 of a second longer to travel from 0 to 62mph. It has the same top speed of 107mph, and achieves 36.7mpg on the combined cycle compared with 39.2mpg with the standard six-speed manual transmission.

2.0 TDI 180PS BiTDI Reserved exclusively for the California SE, the range-topping 2.0-litre 180PS BiTDI has two turbochargers to deliver a sportier driving experience. At low engine speeds, the larger turbo delivers steady charge, and at higher speeds a smaller one gives additional boost. This guarantees optimal charging throughout the engine speed range, maximising efficiency and resulting in a much

19

smoother power delivery. For example, the BiTDI delivers its

maximum of 400Nm of torque from only 1,500rpm, and returns 38.7 on the combined cycle. These figures change remarkably little when this engine is fitted with the DSG transmission. Top speed is identical at 119mph; the time from 0 to 62mph is actually 0.1 second quicker with the DSG transmission, while the emissions rise from 199g/km to 208g/km, and the combined fuel economy decreases slightly from 38.7mpg to 37.2mpg.

Common-rail technologyCommon-rail engines use a common, high-pressure feed of fuel to the injectors for every cylinder.

The fuel injectors with eight-hole jets spray the fuel in a fine mist; due to piezo switching elements, they work twice as rapidly as previous magnetically controlled units. In addition, the common-rail principle controls the injection procedure in five stages (in each case two pre-injections, a main injection, and two post-injections) so that the combustion process takes place smoothly, and maximum advantage is taken of the energy content of the fuel.

20

BlueMotionTechnology

BlueMotion TechnologyBlueMotion Technology is fitted as standard on both California models, and consists of four clever elements (see graphic right). Together, they significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which in turn leads to lower running costs and smaller carbon footprint. Volkswagen’s BlueMotion Technology enables users to be environmentally friendly without compromising on power or performance. Using simple innovations, BlueMotion Technology-equipped models strike a perfect balance between driving enjoyment and environmental friendliness but remain suitable for everyday use.

Energy recuperationWhen braking, energy during deceleration is wasted. Volkswagen’s energy recuperation system uses some of that momentum to run the alternator and charge the battery. If the battery is well-charged, the engine has to do less work turning the alternator to keep ittopped up. This cuts fuel use and emissions.

Cruise controlBy keeping the California at a constant speed, cruise control saves fuel that would normally be wasted when road speed fluctuates. Especially useful for driving over long stretches, it stops road speed creeping up unintentionally and reduces the driver’s physical workload.

Low rolling-resistance tyresTyres with low rolling-resistance mean that the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to get the California moving – or keep it moving. It all helps to save fuel and reduce emissions.

Start/stopAllows the driver to save fuel at traffic lights and in stationary traffic. With the vehicle in neutral and the clutch out, the engine automatically switches off, saving fuel and reducing emissions. To restart the engine, all the driver needs to do is depress the clutch. How BlueMotion

Technology works tolower fuel bills and

CO2 emissions

21

A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the 114PS Beach, while the 140PS engine is linked to a

six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG box. The 180PS unit is offered with a six-speed manual or DSG automatic.

DSG is as economical as it is convenient to use, and performs gearshifts within a few hundredths of a second without any interruption in traction.

The seventh gear of the DSG is designed as an overdrive, with top speed reached in sixth, so the top gear has a particularly long ratio. This reduces engine speed, fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

DSG operates with two automatic clutches. While one is engaged, the second is poised ready to accept the drive of the next gear. Gear changes are completed in less than four hundredths of a second. The driver can leave the transmission in drive mode (like a conventional automatic) or can elect to change gear manually via the gear lever pushing it forwards to change up, or backwards to change down.

Safe and secure: California dynamics

S safe handling is at the heart of the California’s dynamic set-up. The body structure is extremely stiff and

integrates advanced under-floor bracing that forms the main carrier of loads. This element of the structure is critical to the strength and the safety of the California, and has been designed to deform in a predictable way in the event of collision.

The California boasts highly effective lateral impact protection. Large-size body sills, lateral impact members incorporated into the doors and the elevated seating position provide protection for occupants in the event of side impact. Additional reinforcements in the pillars further improve the bodyshell’s endurance limit.

AxlesThe California’s strut-type front suspension features a separate front subframe. Unusually, the track control arms and anti-roll bar are attached to a subframe rather than being directly linked to the body. Vibration-absorbing mountings are

Running gear

used to attach the subframe to the body, leading to extremely effective insulation and enhanced ride comfort. The subframe also serves as a second energy absorbing

platform in a head-on collision. At the rear, there is a semi-trailing arm arrangement with compact ‘miniblock’ coil springs and separate dampers, as well as an anti-roll bar.

Page 23: Commercial Vehicles...lightweight materials to minimise weight and, for maximum safety, is beautifully designed with curved rather than and sharp edges. Underneath the glass panel

23

4MOTION four-wheel driveThe California’s 4MOTION four-wheel drive with electronic control sets new standards for traction, safety, comfort and efficiency, and is offered across the model range.

It automatically transfers power using a Haldex4 system to channel power to the wheels with the most grip. As much as 100 per cent can transfer to the rear wheels if necessary. In normal driving, 90 per cent of the engine’s power is delivered to the front wheels, with 10 per cent going to the rear. This results in characteristics familiar to drivers of front-wheel-drive

vehicles, plus improved fuel efficiency compared with a traditional permanent four-wheel-drive system.

4MOTION uses a multi-disc clutch in which the oil pressure responsible for distributing torque to the rear wheels is established by an electric pump. An oil pressure accumulator enables the electric pump to be switched off from time to time, thereby reducing fuel consumption. An electronically controlled valve enables the pressure stored in this accumulator to be passed on to the clutch discs where the power flow to the

rear wheels can be varied precisely by means of the pressure level.

The clutch carries out the commands from the electronic control unit extremely rapidly. The unit processes nearly 40 different signals including the steering angle, yaw rates, accelerator setting and engine speed. Not only does this improve traction on poor surfaces, it also contributes to a general improvement in active safety as it helps keep the vehicle under control. Loss of traction on individual wheels is prevented by the electronic differential lock (EDL).

The California’s 4MOTION system automatically transfers power using a Haldex4 clutch to channel power to the wheels with the most grip. As much as 100 per cent can be transferred to the rear wheels if necessary.

24

Steering, tyres and wheelsThe California’s efficient power-assisted steering delivers excellent steering precision. Its energy-saving pump delivers hydraulic fluid according to demand, so the quantity delivered is always optimal for assisting the steering. For example, during low-speed manoeuvres the power-steering support is at its greatest, while at higher speeds the support and output from the pump decreases, which provides more feedback through the steering wheel. This process reduces the power consumption of the steering pump, and therefore fuel consumption.

Correct tyre pressures are important not only for the driver’s safety but also for achieving optimum fuel consumption and lower tyre wear. A tyre-monitoring indicator, available as an option, continuously checks tyre pressures and alerts the driver of any decrease. When a tyre’s pressure decreases, the cross-section or diameter changes, and the affected wheel rolls faster. The monitoring system uses the ABS wheel rotational-speed sensors to calculate comparatively low tyre pressure on any wheel by measuring the rotational difference.

Braking systemA four-channel ABS anti-locking system is standard, along with a TCS traction-control system, EBD electronic brake pressure distribution (which automatically alters front/rear braking effort to maximise braking performance), and an electronic differential lock (EDL).

The emergency-braking hazard warning lights function works by flashing the brake lights rapidly if it detects any heavy braking when the vehicle is travelling at speeds over 60 km/h (37 mph), and then automatically

activates the hazard warning lights to warn other traffic if the vehicle stops.

Working in conjunction with the other elements of the braking system, Brake Assist recognises from the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed whether it is a ‘normal’ braking situation or an emergency stop. In the event of an emergency stop, it automatically increases braking pressure, activating the ABS and ensuring the level of braking meets the needs of the conditions.

Safety systems

Electronic Stabilisation Programme For increased stability in all driving conditions, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) is standard. The sophisticated system automatically senses any tendency for the vehicle to understeer, oversteer or start to slide and reacts within fractions of a second. If this situation occurs, ESP reacts by applying the brakes to one, two, three or all four wheels and adjusting the engine’s power appropriately. In this way, ESP offers a high degree of driving safety, as it is possible for a skid to be corrected even before the driver is aware that one has started, and it is particularly helpful in wet or icy conditions. ESP includes the following functions:

ARP (Active Rollover Protection) Designed to reduce the risk of overturning, ARP calculates three

Safety first: California protection systemsdifferent load conditions (empty, half loaded, fully loaded) depending on how much torque is being used.

Ready Alert Brake Designed for faster braking intervention, if the accelerator is released jerkily the brake lining is already applied to the brake disc in order to shorten the braking time and distance.

Brake Fade Support. If the brakes become hot and begin to fade, the brake pressure is automatically increased to restore braking performance.

Hydraulic Brake Assist This advanced system achieves maximum braking if the brake pedal is not activated forcefully enough in emergency braking. HBA can reduce braking distances by around 25 per cent.

Brake disc wiper When the windscreen wipers are switched on above 50 mph, the system automatically applies the brake pad to the brake disc at regular intervals in order to wipe off the unwanted water.

Trailer StabilisationIf the vehicle is ordered with a factory fitted towbar, ESP also includes trailer stabilisation to help keep the vehicle and trailer in line with each other to try to prevent any instability.

Hill Hold control This system prevents the vehicle rolling backwards by utilising a slippage sensor integrated into the ESP control device that recognises when the vehicle stops and maintains the braking pressure, even after the brake pedal is released, until there is any movement of the accelerator pedal.

The California’s ESP system offers a high degree of driving safety, as it is possible for a skid to be corrected even before the driver is aware that one has started, and it is particularly helpful in wet or icy conditions.

Safetysystems

Additional safety featuresAn airbag deactivation switch is standard in case a child seat needs to be carried in the front passenger seat. An emergency-braking hazard-warning lights function flashes the brake lights rapidly if it detects any heavy braking when the vehicle is travelling at speeds over 37 mph, and then automatically activates the hazard warning lights to warn other traffic if the vehicle stops.

Lane Change AssistAt speeds over 20mph, the Lane Change Assist option for the California uses a 24 GHz radar to scan the blind spot area at the rear and side of the vehicle. If the radar detects that vehicles are approaching or in the blind spot, it alerts the driver by illuminating a strip of LED lights in the exterior door mirror on the corresponding side of the vehicle.

Cornering lightsCornering lights, when integrated into the front fog lights, are designed to improve visibility for the driver when negotiating

bends in the road, potentially safeguarding pedestrians and cyclists at junctions or when parking. The system is activated by steering movements and/or the indicators being used at speeds below 25 mph and illuminates a distance of several metres at an angle of 35 degrees.

Stronger by designThe California’s bodyshell is designed to include a number of crash-safety features. The chassis’ side members act as the main load paths in the event of a collision, and are designed to ‘concertina’, absorbing impact energy as they do so. At collision

speeds of up to 9.3 mph the front bumper will absorb impact energy, and body parts located behind will be undamaged, minimising repair bills that would usually result from around-town manoeuvring and parking knocks.

Another important driver safety measure is a steering column equipped with deformation crash elements which ensure that, in the event of head-on impact, the steering wheel ‘telescopes’ and is not pushed into the cabin. If the driver should nonetheless collide with the steering wheel, a special mechanism moves it away by as much as 50mm.

Tests have shown that head restraints are often set too low, so that in a collision they are pushed back into their lowest position, leading to whiplash. To minimise such risks, the California’s head restraints cannot be adjusted downwards until they have been deliberately unlocked. The tilt angle of each restraint is also adjustable.

At speeds over 20mph, the Lane Change Assist option for the California uses a 24 GHz radar to scan the blind spot area at the rear and side of the vehicle.

customers can tailor the vehicle further to suit their tastes and requirements using the comprehensive range of options that includes:

• Awning (roll-out type on driver’s side)• Front and rear parking sensors• Satellite navigation with 6-inch colour touchscreen and AUX-IN• Multifunction steering wheel with radio controls

• Rear privacy glass• Alcantara/leather upholstery• Six-disc CD autochanger• DAB digital radio reception• Tyre-pressure warning light• Towbar (removable with 13 pin socket)• Alternative alloy wheels• Metallic or pearl-effect paint• Lane Change Assist • Powered sliding side door• Additional single seat• Visibility Pack 1 (headlamp washers)• Visibility Pack 2 (rain sensor and automatic dimming rear-view mirror)

• Tailgate-mounted bicycle rack for four bikes• Roof rack• Reversing camera• Picnic accessories such as a folding kettle

A range of Brandrup accessories designed specifically for the California include side walls for the (optional) roll-out awning, additional mattress for the folding bed, storage pockets for the back of the front seats, anti-slip mats for cupboard shelves, cooking sets, plate holder and cutlery-tray liner. A separate brochure is available for the full range.

Parking sensorsFront and rear parking sensors simplify tight parking manoeuvres, helped by an optical parking system to highlight specific areas where objects are detected. The system uses ultrasonic sensors integrated in the bumpers to pinpoint potential obstructions around the car. To activate the system, reverse gear is selected. The system produces an audible warning signal which beeps more quickly to guide the driver up to a safe distance from any objects, and becomes a continuous sound when it calculates an impact is imminent. Not only can this prevent car-park knocks, it might also help prevent accidents.

33

Service intervals have traditionally been set at fixed time or mileage parameters, but the development of engines and LongLife synthetic oil has changed this. Built-in sensors continually monitor oil quality, so a smart chip decides when it needs changing and flags up a service reminder on the dashboard monitor. Service intervals are therefore determined by driving style and patterns.

These long intervals are possible thanks to the use of Castrol SLX LongLife engine oil. This is fully synthetic SAE 0W-30 oil that has been specially formulated to be compatible with the longer service intervals of both petrol and diesel engines.

By removing this oil and using traditional lubricants, it is still possible to have servicing at fixed intervals. The choice is made at PDI (the vehicle’s pre-delivery inspection), and can be changed at a major service.

There are no strict rules on which to base the decision of which servicing regime will be most beneficial to a customer. LongLife oil protects for up to three times the distance of standard oil, but it costs roughly three times as much.

However, cost savings are available from reduced servicing costs, and possible improved fuel economy: operators can expect an average reduction of 2.7 per cent on their fuel bills by using LongLife oil. What’s more, as less oil has to be disposed of with less servicing, there are clear advantages for the environment.

WarrantyAll new Californias sold through a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK Van Centre have an unlimited-mileage, three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. The first two years with no mileage restrictions are manufacturer operated, while the third year (and up to 100,000 miles) is a Van Centre warranty.

In addition, all have a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty and a three-year comprehensive recovery and assistance package. Fully trained technicians are on hand 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to diagnose and repair most problems at the roadside using Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles equipment and genuine parts.

Flexible or fixed: aftercare options

Volkswagen TDI engines have inbuilt sensors that continually monitor oil quality, so a smart chip decides when it needs changing and flags up a service reminder on the dashboard monitor.
