50th COMMISSIONING DAY...Marvelous and Memorable By Susana Gomez

What a beautiful and patriotic 50th Commissioning Day Ceremony! The weather was perfect

and the traditional sea of nautical blue and white worn by members and guests added to the

pageantry of the afternoon. The Mt. Vernon Community Band entertained us with their patri-

otic music. The U.S. Coast Guard Color Guard raised the U.S. flag and the Silent Drill Team

performed an exciting bayonet drill.

Rev. William C. Teng of the Heritage Presbyterian Church blessed the fleets, including the Mt. Vernon High

School Crew Team Fleet, which named one of their shells “MVYC Commodore” after our club. Bart Hewitt treated us

to a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, and the Mount Vernon Yacht Club Singers led us in singing America

The Beautiful.

Past Commodore Jim Hamrick did a great job as Master of

Ceremonies. Commodore Bonnie Breneman gave inspiring re-

marks, introduced the Board and past commodores, and recognized

longtime MVYC members (40 years or more). And we toasted all

in turn with champagne.

We were honored with the attendance of Congressional

state and local government representatives. Representative Tom

Davis presented us a plaque with copy of the Congressional Record

in which he included glowing remarks. Senator Toddy Puller and

Delegate Kris Amundson read a beautiful House Joint Resolution

that they have introduced and is awaiting action by the Virginia

House of Delegates. Fairfax County Chairman Gerry Connolly and

A few evenings ago your crack Beacon Staff — Chris and Bart with wives Lauren and Evelyn — anchored off Mt. Vernon on the Toon fleet to watch the fireworks. Just as the anchor was made fast, we discovered, inex-plicably, two cool-ers on board, loaded with food

and wine! As we uncorked the wine, also inexplicably, a Power Fleet boat containing Gene Diotalevi, Jim Gordon and someone named “Pokey” pulled alongside. Clearly, they had sensed the wine from the MVYC ma-rina. The food, win, fireworks and fun were spectacular, and the June Beacon was planned. The Power Fleet boat left when the wine ran out.

As the boating and swimming season commence, let’s

all try to focus on safety. The Marina Committee has in-

vested many hours making a safer and more attractive ma-

rina—let’s all contribute to its continued safe & attractive

environment: Bonnie Breneman, Commodore

Use supple, intact lines to tie your vessel to pilings & piers and check them periodically to make sure they re-main supple & intact. Vessels should be tied appropriately to protect the vessel and the dock—if you’re not sure how to do that, just ask. Take advantage of the hundreds of years of boating expertise available from our 100+ boating members. Make sure your lines do not cause a trip hazard by routing them under, not over, finger piers.

Use only marine or hospital grade electrical connections at the dock pedestals—household grade presents a shock hazard, as well as the potential for more stray electricity to cause electrolysis to underwater running gear. Keep those power cords out of the water—even though they are insulated, stray current still escapes into the wa-ter, causing a shock hazard and electrolysis. Power cords should not be routed across finger piers or docks.

Remember that the marina and Dogue Creek, between the designated markers is a NO WAKE zone.

NO WAKE applies to ALL vessels—no matter what you may have heard elsewhere.

Sailing vessels may not be maneuvered under sail within the lagoon.

Consider taking a boating safety course from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or the US Power Squadron, or online, if you haven’t already done so. Get a Vessel Safety Check—offered by the USCG Aux, the Power Squadron AND the local Marine Patrol.

Be courteous to your fellow boaters on the water and at the dock.

As a daily user of the MVYC Pool during the season, Pool Chairman Brent Pope is in a prime position to ob-serve and facilitate enforcement of the safety rules already in place at the pool. Members can help him in this endeavor:

Be familiar with the Pool Rules and make sure your family and guests are, too.

Enter & exit through the shower/changing rooms.

Sign in on each visit to the pool. Introduce yourself to the pool staff, especially if you have children who use the pool independently.

Make sure the appropriate permissions are on file for children who use the pool independently and for caregiv-ers who accompany children in lieu of parents.

Introduce your guests to the pool staff and remember that a guest must be escorted by a member (head of household or spouse) at all times.

Smoking and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the pool or on the pool decks (exceptions noted in the com-plete Rules).

Wet bathing suits are prohibited in the House.

Please inform Brent of any problems you encounter so they can be discharged quickly.

We are also noting the seasonal change in activity on the grounds. Our facilities are for the exclusive use of members and guests. Remember to keep families and guests apprised of the rules and etiquette associated with the use of our Club. Especially remember that the member is the head of household and/or spouse—family members and guests must be accompanied by the member at all times, except as specified in the Pool Rules. Al-though I understand that our young people like to “hang out” at the club, the young people are not authorized to bring guests unless they are supervised or escorted. Family members are especially not authorized to be in pos-session of the plastic passkeys—those are for access for head of household and/or spouse only. Please do not give the beer locker combination to your children (they should not be in the House without you anyway)—the VA ABC would not look kindly on minors having access to the locker! Most of the young people I’ve talked to about the rules and etiquette have been polite and respectful, but the point is, I should not be the one responsible for providing the information.

OK—so now you know why Jim Gordon calls me Mommodore! Have a great summer! Especially plan on cele-brating our 50th anniversary on June 24, 2006 at 6 PM! See you around the club!

50th COMMISSIONING DAY (cont’d. from pg 1)(cont’d. from pg 1)

At the end of the ceremonies, club members and guests watched an exciting race by the Mt. Vernon High School Crew Team. The race was won by the "MVYC Commodore," a new racing shell dedicated to our club. Then some members enjoyed a picnic with their families while others lingered on visiting with our special guests.

Commissioning Day was a success because of the hard work of many club members. In particular, I would like to thank my hus-band Mario Moreno, Bonnie Breneman, Jim Hamrick, Susan, Greg and Eric Rehe, David Givens, Lew and Mike Wetzel, Jacque Knight, Julia Casey, Nancy Valley, and our photographers George Holthaus and Russell Poe. Special thanks also to: Chris and Lauren Bazel, Pam Beggan, Bonnie Breneman, Cathy Bradford, Greg and Gregory Casey, Anna Diefendorf, Steve Donnock, Virginia Edgell, Marion Gibson, Paula Givens, Jackie and Nick Gorski, Bart Hewitt, Mary Ann Holthaus, John Ichter, Ron and Joan Jones, Ed Knight, Wil-liam and Virginia Lacey, John Leary, Charles Manka, Norman and Margaret Mayer, David Miskimens, Melisa Narins, Charles Porta-luppi, Zita Pojeta, Claudia Reinsel, Jack Sanders, Craig and Zorine Shirley, Marge and Jerry Skelly, Pat Stallings and Karen Cerutti, Alexi Stavropoulos, Bruce Valley, Don Waller, Des Wassell, Karen

The "Bob the Builder" TGIF on April 28th, sponsored by Bart and Evelyn Hewitt, provided the club with an opportunity to honor the su-perb job done by our Marina Committee Chairs, Bill Gard and Jim Bor-ches, their volunteer workpersons, and the contractor, in rebuilding and upgrading our well-worn marina. (If you have never heard of "Bob the Builder," you don't have young kids or grandkids.) The nearly 70 people agreed that the hors 'd oeuvres were excellent, the food tables overflowed with main dishes and desserts, the "Bob the Builder" decorations were festive, and the Miskimens Marvelous Margarita recipe was appropri-ately potent. Speaking for many grateful boat owners, Evelyn thanked the Marina Team for their unbelievable performance in getting the pro-ject done so well, so quickly, and so cost-effectively. Commodore Brene-man, speaking for the entire MVYC membership, also thanked the team for their contribution. Bart sang a special song, accompanied by Pam Beggan, called "Marina," a parody of "Maria" from the mu-sical West Side Story. The Team members were presented with Bob-The-Builder hats, and Bill Gard thanked everyone who had worked on the project. It was a great evening, and a truly great team was enthusiastically honored. As Bob the Builder would say, "Can we do it? Yes, we can!"

As the weather and the 2006 boating season heat up, it’s good to see the marina filling up with boats. Most, if not all, A and B dock slip holders seem pleased with the floating dock arrangement and we’re all learning new and creative ways to tie up. In most cases boats on the float-ing docks can be secured by tying bow lines, stern line and spring lines to the cleats on the floating docks. If you don’t have to tie a line to the mooring piles at the outer edge of the slip, you won’t have to worry about leaving

enough slack in the lines to provide for tide swings – your boat will simply ride the tide with the floating docks. The ability to do this depends on the cleat arrangement on your boat as well as the size of your boat. Some boats do need lines tied to the mooring piles to keep their bows from encroaching on boats in adjacent slips.

On another front, the Marina Committee currently is attempting to match the number of small boats occupying spaces in the dinghy racks with the number of MVYC members who have paid for those spaces. Many more spaces are occupied than have been paid for, and we’ve had additional requests from members for spaces in the racks. We know that there are several derelict and abandoned boats in the dinghy rack and we’re close to identifying all of the small boats whose owners actually have paid for a space. The committee is asking MVYC members to identify any boats they may have in the dinghy rack and, if they haven’t paid, either pay for the cost of a space—$84 for the sea-son—or remove the boat. In about two weeks the committee will remove any unidentified boats from the dinghy rack. Please contact any Marina Committee member if you have questions.

May has been such a wonderful month! Commissioning Day, held May 7th, was a wonderful event. Bart Hewitt sang the National Anthem, the U.S. Coast Guard Honor Guard presented the colors, and their Drill Team did an incredible performance. There was an incredible crew team race by the MVHS Crew Team, and great food. Con-gratulations to Susana Gomez and her hard working com-mittee members for making this year's Commissioning Day a fabulous event! The Mother's Day Tea was held on May 13th. A big "Thank You" goes out to Pam Beggan and

her committee members for putting together this lovely event. (See the excellent George Holthaus photos.) It is an event that the mothers and daughters look forward to attending every year!

Don't forget, this year is Mount Vernon Yacht Club's 50th Anniversary! Christine Stav-

ropoulos and her committee are preparing for this wonderful event which will take place on June 24th. The Chair and her committee are working hard to make this anniversary a wonderful and memorable occasion. Please mark your calendars now to attend this wonderful event!

The TGIF'S still continue every Friday night. Joan Jones is in charge of scheduling these events. If she calls you to host a Friday TGIF, please say yes! If it has been a while since you have hosted a TGIF, please give Joan a call. Joan can be reached at 703-780-2965.

The Social Committee is always ready to welcome new members. We sponsor many adult and children's events throughout the year and we need your help if we are to have a successful year. Please call either Gail or Anna if you are interested in being a part of the social committee.

The annual MVYC membership billing cycle has closed, and the club now has 218 members with two new families pending acceptance. If things go as ex-pected, MVYC should have 221 members by the end of May.

Our cap is 230 so we’re down about nine members. Should you have family or friends you think would make great addition to MVYC, I urge you to put the word out.

Should you have any questions, or would like an electronic information package, please contact me at [email protected] (703.313.8235). The mem-bership directory will be available online within the next week and will reflect the current membership. I ask that you review your information and forward any corrections to me at your earliest convenience, if you’re not getting MVYC e mail notices, again, please let me know.

If you attended Commissioning Day or have visited the Point recently then you’ve seen MVYC’s special edi-tion 50th Anniversary commemorative burgee hoisted with pride on our flag mast – and on many of the boats in the marina. The Club has authorized this distinctive pennant to fly throughout the year in celebration of reach-ing our first half century.

Sales of the commemorative burgee have been as brisk as a fine racing breeze and only a few remain before they are sold out. Whether you are a boater, a swim teamer, pool lounger, or just a loyal member, don’t miss the opportunity to get one while you can. They will look just as great flying on your wall at home as they do on any yacht in the basin.

The cost is only $35 – same as the regular burgee – and all of the proceeds will go toward our 50th Anniver-sary Party on June 24th.

Hey boaters, it’s time to enjoy warmer days and cool evenings, perfect

for a sunset cruise or sitting on your boat at the marina. Whatever you

do, enjoy the boating season!

We had a great turnout for the USCG Auxiliary Courtesy Safety In-

spection Day. Over 18 vessels were checked out for the proper safety

equipment and as a result of their inspection, the boat owners received a

2006 vessel safety inspection sticker.

We cannot thank Mr.Bud Miller, from USCG Auxiliary Flotilla (14-4)

enough! Bud was the only inspector that day. He did a wonderful job even when weather turned overcast, with peri-

ods of rain, Bud stayed with us; inspecting every boat that was on the roster. Thank you, thank you!

We had good weather and a great turnout for the brunch cruise to

the Old Town Holiday Inn. A big thank you to Captain Chris Ruckman

and First Mate Diane Wilson, Captain Stuart Matthews and First

Mate Kaye Matthews for welcoming club members aboard their ves-

sels. Everyone had a wonderful cruise, good food and delightful con-

versation.

The next event...MVYC 4th Annual Parade of Lights. This year

it is on Monday, July 3rd. No excuses, the next day is the official holi-

day and we want to see many boaters from the sail and power fleet out

there shining bright. Fly our commemorative burgee, pull out the bun-

ting, flags and lights!

Take your family and friends on your vessel for the fun filled

event. Mark your calendar! Watch for email reminders and the flyer

By the time you read this, the pool will be open and the swim team will be using their ice picks to clear the lanes to practice their strokes! Seriously, the pool is chilly, but our intrepid Dolphins will be practicing hard to get in shape for the first meet on June 17th. Stop by the pool any weekday after 4:00 PM to see the activities. Check the schedule printed again in this edi-tion of the Beacon, and come to any home meet to cheer on the team. Meets start at 9:00 AM.

If you think the Redskins were exciting at playoffs, then you've never seen the relays at the end of a meet when the score is close. Not to mention the fact that we always have great food at our concession stand. Stay for lunch and have a swim after the meet! Another great swim team event is the 4th of July party held on - you guessed it - the 4th of July. The party starts at noon and features our fabulous concessions and all the pool games that you know and love. Practice drown-ing early so that you will be in shape for the annual greased watermelon game! For those of you that have never seen this game in action, it consists of two teams vying to get a floating watermelon, heavily greased with shortening, on the pool deck "goal" defended by the opposing team. There's a kids game and an adult game, in which I have been foolish enough to participate. I think I swallowed half the pool last year. We had a successful kickoff banquet. For everyone that was unable to register and get swim suits, I have good news. First, you can register any time, it's not too late. Send me an email at [email protected] and we'll coordi-nate. We will be having the same swimsuit again this year, but if you still need a suit for your swimmer(s), we'll be having Sport Fair come to the pool after a practice. An email will be forthcoming on the date and time. I've also had questions about caps and tee shirts. Every registered swimmer gets a team tee shirt. Every reg-istered swimmer will get a team cap. The shirts and caps will be distributed after a practice, date TBD. Parents, if you want a team tee shirt, hopefully you ordered one on your registration form. If not, let me know and we'll get more shirts. The team shirt this year will be the 50th Anniversary tee shirt, so get your orders in for this special item. Speaking of shirts, if you haven't done so already, visit the MVYC web site and click on the "Ship's Store" link. All the great items for our 50th Anniversary are online. All sales benefit the swim team. But be careful on the men's polo, it runs large. You may want to order a size smaller than usual. See you poolside! NOTE TO PARENTS: Afternoon practice begins May 30th, 4:00 PM for 8 & under, and 4:30 PM for everyone else. Morning practice begins June 21st, the day after Fairfax County schools break for summer vacation. Practice starts at 9:00 AM for 8& under and 9:30 AM for everyone else.

Recent Visit of Doug Cross of Australia to MVYC by Gary Spivack

First, some background. Juliette, Cara and I own TANGIER on inner W. Mostly, we like to cruise and daysail. I belong to an association of people who own the same type of boat—a Noelex 30 (termed the Farr 31 in the USA). Most were built in New Zealand or Australia are sailed in eastern Australia. There are about 250 members of the Noelex Association, and I regularly correspond with Australians via a Yahoo group. The association has been valuable, as there are only a handful of Noelex 30s in the USA. We share maintenance tips, cruising stories, and even have parts shipped from the factory.

Last March I received an E-mail from one of the members—Doug Cross, who sails a Noelex 25 out of Port Stephens in New South Wales. He works as a civil servant to the Australian Air Force and is in the Australian Air National Guard. As part of his job, he was to attend a conference in San Diego, then spend several days in Washing-ton DC attending various meetings related to his defense projects, and expected to have April 30th free to “mess about”. Of course, he wanted to go sailing, which worked well because the first MVYC race of the season was to be on that Sunday.

I was able to get TANGIER cleaned rigged before Doug’s arrival. Juliette and I scrubbed the decks, waxed the hull, cleaned the bottom. While trying to get the mainsail back on the boat I discovered that birds had moved into the boom and eaten thru my outhaul and reef lines. Re-rigging was called for.

Doug flew in on Saturday evening and got a hotel room in Crystal City. On Sunday, I drove him to our home, where we swapped stories and got acquainted. Since Doug has a Noelex 25, he was quite impressed with the 30, but familiar with it, since it was so much like his boat. Once on board, we headed out to buoy 67 for the start. With the wind out of the NW and alternately puffy and/or non-existent, our conditions were typical. The course carried us north to 69, supposedly upwind, then turned to 64 off Gunston Cove, finishing back at 67. We got TANGIER off to a reasonable start, then attempted to tack up to 69 against the current (always fun). We were first around, and pro-ceeded downwind attempting to wing the jib out to windward. Half way down the leg, the wind changed and we tacked again, arriving at 64 on a close reach. We were first around by a whisker and then had to tack back to the line (imagine that!). We were first over by less than a whisker, but most importantly, our fellow Noelexian had a nice day on the water in Washington DC. He was beside himself. After the race, I ran Doug up to see Mt. Vernon estate from the water in HURRICANE. He got some nice pictures and a ride in our restored little boat. He was suitably im-pressed. We exchanged yacht club burgees and I ran him back to the hotel.

This little story is noteworthy because, if you have an organization for your boat it is worth being involved with the membership. Along with a “support group” for when things go wrong, there is a wealth of knowledge, mostly learned the hard way, that becomes immediately available to you when you join in the group. I learned this a while ago with the Noelex crowd, getting help with many tasks that were confusing at first. I also belong to the Mid-Atlantic Bertram group, who rendezvous in Atlantic City each summer. I trailered up last July and had a wonderful time talking boats with other Bertram owners, learning many lessons about my boat from others who had been down the restoration road. If you are handy on the Internet, I bet there is an organization for most any boat variety.

Best of all, it improves your enjoyment on the water. Plus, I have a built-in connection should I ever get to

Australia!
