For many it was not their first while for many of our juniors these would be their first. The club were represented in International 14s, Javelin, Cherub, Heron, Sabre and O’Pen Bic classes. Some sailors jumped classes and competed in Tazers and 420s. All sailors represented themselves and the club to the highest level. I would like to acknowledge Brad Devine and Ian Furlong for winning back to back nationals as well as placing 3rd in the worlds. During nationals period the club opened for a quiet New Year’s Evening we were very lucky to share the fireworks from RPYC. On Australia Day the club was buzzing, I think every table and chair was on the balcony taking advantage of the cool air and spectacular view and of course later the fireworks lit up the sky. The season continues to fly by. We have enjoyed not only the sailing but the social events at the club. The last meal nights have seen the club full with all the usual suspects but also a lot of new faces. It is these new faces that reinforce the strength of the club and assures its future. The club is its members and we are lucky to have some incredibly generous ones who give up so much of their time. We all need to acknowledge these people they are the junior coaches, start and finish crews, safety boat operators, ladies (and the odd gent) who serve and work in the canteen, those who work in the bar, the unseen who just fix that or this because it needs to be done and of course the management committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes. To each and every one of you thank you. Members please remember to thank these people and maybe offer to lend a hand. I would like to make a special thank you to my wife, Lady Commodore Jan who flies under the radar… as Lady Commodore but puts in an outstanding contribution to the junior co-ordination of training new young sailors. Her commitment to this portfolio is to be commended she like many others gives up her time unselfishly. Her efforts and contribution have been happening for many years now, her personal drive to get the club back on track as a Yachting Australia Training Centre again is to be commended. The club is now gaining from this commitment. I am always blown away when I see all the eager faces of new sailors. The other rewarding part of this is we are now seeing many of these new faces getting involved in other club activities. One night we witnessed the new junior parents with Jan working behind the bar they definitely created a great atmosphere in the club. Thank you Jan and of course your team of coaches and support people

that work so hard to make sure this works not only learning to sail but also to have fun, make new friends and of course making sure they are kids. Also thank you to the parents that also work within the club I am sure your commitment to this will help your young people grow up to be great Australian citizens. I have never worked out how Jan can work with children all week as a teacher and then come down to the club and do this again on a volunteer basis she has certainly played her part in society. I commend you Jan for this contribution and I am very proud of you. I would also like to thank Amanda. Amanda is only new to the management team but again in a very short time she is making her mark. She is thinking out side of the square and as a part of her portfolio she is slowly making changes on how the canteen runs, we have witnessed this in the last two meal nights. I have thoroughly enjoyed your meal nights and look forward to what the next one brings. Amanda, your many supporting helpers both men and woman, and of course your amigos, Lynette, Michelle and Hannah thank you for all your efforts. The weekend ahead sees the big migration to Koombana Bay it seems that most of the club heads down. This is always a great weekend and allows all of us to catch our breath and have a break from the club. We have been doing this for many years and Koombana Bay Yacht Club always make us feel welcome … it’s like our second home. For the new members lock this into your calendar next year so you can join us the timing of this in the sailing calendar is perfect. Looking forward we still have a busy time ahead with a State championships to arrange and run at the club for the Javelin, International 14s and one round left to run for the Cherubs. We also have during the same period the Bogan Bingo evening this is a family night and by all accounts should be great fun so buy your tickets early. Once again thank you to the volunteers for your support in and around the club. Members I hope you enjoy your time in and around the club and if any of you have any points you would like to discuss with me please don’t hesitate to chat with me or any of the committee for that matter. Yours Sincerely Rob Thomas Commodore Perth Dinghy Sailing Club.

INTERNATIONAL 14 Fantastic turnout from WA for the Worlds as 13 boats made the trip to Geelong. It was impressive to see so many families come and support the WA team, shows what a great family environment our club and class have here in WA. Unfortunately the Poms took out the top 2 spots with their professional crew work and boat preparation. Congratulations to Brad and Footy, once again, as they became National champions for 2015 and also 3rd in the Worlds. They weren’t the only ones to do well as Stuart and Ben came 11th . Also Nigel and Dane won the Handicap Worlds a great result for the outgoing secretary, we wish him all the best in Texas. The rest of the results are on the website. Stop the Press – Bramley has bought a boat! (I’m still in shock) Dane has bought Nigel’s boat. All are chasing crews including Luggy. So if you are aware of anyone interested in crewing let them know. Cammy one Wire

JAVELIN JIVE

The 44th Javelin Class National Titles were held at Chelsea Yacht club on Port Phillip Bay Victoria from the 28th of December 2014 to the 3rd of January 2015. Three boats from the Perth Dingy Sailing Club in Western Australia made the journey hoping to retain the title. Measuring day saw a lovely seabreeze and a good opportunity for the WA sailors to get back on the water since shipping their boats off in early December. Unfortunately those conditions were not a sign of things to come with the forecast for the next eight days indicating that at least two days would be lost through heavy breezes making it a challenge to get all nine heats in. The Invitation Race and Heat 1 were sailed back to back on the 28th of December in a light seabreeze with a number of eager boats breaking the start in both races. Local boat Honky was first over the line in both races but disqualified in the Invitation race for breaking the start. While placing second in the Invitation Race, top WA boat Joanne (runner up in the previous Nationals) could only manage a sixth in the 1st Heat. It was clear that rig adjustments were in order for the WA boats to adapt to the local conditions. The following day say Heat 2 start in a medium offshore breeze which proved to be the best of the series. The heavier conditions suited the WA boats with Joanne finishing first. Heat 3 was sailed back to back and started in much the same breeze which however dropped after the first lap leaving a slop for the boats to churn through. Local boat One Last Roll of the Dice won with the boats at the rear enjoying the fast downwind leg to the finish on the front edge of the ‘Southerly Buster’ rolling in. All boats got safely to shore just as the 30 plus knot southerly hit turning the water to wild whitecaps in a matter of minutes. With gusts hitting 50 knots and a continuation of conditions into the next day the decision was taken early to abandon the next days racing. Racing recommenced on 31 December in a light seabreeze and relatively flat water with Heats 4 and 5 sailed back to back with by One Last Roll of the Dice continuing its winning streak to win both races - Heat 5 by more than 5 minutes from the second boat. WA boat Joanne finished second in each race showing that they had adapted well to the conditions. Following the New Years Day layoff two races were held on the 2nd of January. These proved to be the most variable conditions of the series with major wind shift just before the start of Heat 6 causing a restart. Variable in both strength and direction there was both the potential for big gains and big losses upwind and down. Joanne won Heat 6 while Honky took the honours in Heat 7.

As forecast the last scheduled day of racing saw a very strong North Westerly whipping up the sand on a scorching 41 degree day. Hopes of sailing were dashed when a coastguard boat offshore from the yacht club reported step one and half meter waves. At 3pm sailing was abandoned for the day resulting in a seven race series. Final results were: 1st: Honky – Brett Williams/Tim Fountain with 12 points; 2nd: One Last Role of the Dice – Jamie Thompson/Greg Parsons with 15 points; 3rd: Razor – Peter Sharp/Lachlan Sharp with 16 points; and 4th: Joanne – Bill Devine/Dan Moore with 17 points. Consistency again proved the key with apart from a 5th Honky finishing in the top three in all races. The WA sailors did not come home empty handed with Bill Devine (Joanne) taking out the Masters Title and Tim Cochrane (Skidmark which finished 6th overall) taking out the Junior title. While the weather caused many challenges and frustrations the effort contributed by the Chelsea Yacht Club volunteers was first class and greatly appreciated by the WA crews. As usual a highlight of Presentation nite was the somewhat one sided persecution of skippers by the crews union who again enjoyed many a free ale at the skippers expense. The 45th Nationals will be held in conjunction with the South Pacific Championship in Perth over the 2015/2016 Christmas/New Year period. A number of New Zealand boast have already committed to attend together with interstate boats.

SABRE SCENE Unfortunately there is no report from the Sabre section in

this issue. They are still recovering from a hard nationals!

SIGNET SIGNPOST Everyone survived the festive season and has put in an appearance this year. Traditionally, the winds are different after New Year. The trusty and reliable South Westerlies become less common with some variable winds from random directions appearing. Last week’s race proved that you can teach an old dog some new tricks. Katie got lost and took The Phantom round the wrong mark. That led to a shuffling of the positions in what was always going to be a close race. The main beneficiary was Just Meloe, moving into first place. This was short lived with Rob doing pirouettes after getting way to friendly with a Sabre. The girls in Sniper were meanwhile out there just doing their thing, visiting all the different fleets across the bay. Q7 was biding their time and not making mistakes. Their solid performance was rewarded with a credible second. Shredder has been hovering in the wings with consistently good racing. This will be rewarded in time when those kinks are ironed out. The Phantom has become the pace setter with everyone out to challenge them at any opportunity. The Club Championship has The Phantom leading from Just Meloe, followed by Katie. The State Championship has The Phantom in a comfortable first place, with Katie and Sniper one point apart in second and third respectively. Rumour has it that Shamrock will be back on the water and be a force to be reckoned with. We wish Jack all the best and hope he will be back strong and fighting fit. How come Jack always gets to sail downhill in light weather?

Bunbury will host two State Heats and could be the deciding venue for the major positions. We have had a

good amount of interest for crewing opportunities. We need to find more skippers to get all the boats on the water. Looking for volunteers! Please use the Club open day to invite potential candidates to come down and have some fun. John Glisson

Saturday 14th March 2015.

HERON HAPPENINGS The Heron fleet is a little smaller than we have experienced during the last few seasons with only 4 boats regularly making the start line. However, there is still the usual enthusiasm around the fleet. This season we have welcomed Taylor Wilson who was sailing with Holly until Christmas. The family have now moved to Queensland to live, so the hunt was on to find a replacement on Holidaze. Olivia Domasz came down and had a training session with Anthony and kind of liked what sailing was all about, so decided to give it a go during racing. Unfortunately due to a few technical issues and some big winds, the racing side of things didn’t go well, but the girls have had some fun sailing in the bay and developing their skills. We have also welcomed Jess Johnson who has been sailing with Kelvin. Jess is a student at A Plus Swim School and has been for a few years now. Fortunately. Kelvin is a non swimmer, so he has been getting Jess to teach him a bit about swimming. The unfortunate part is that they have been doing their lessons during racing on a Saturday afternoon. It is reported that Jess’s dad, Todd, also wanted to have a go at swimming lessons recently while Jess was teaching Kelvin, so he stripped down to his Jocks and dived off Tigger Express to get involved. Kelvin has been a fly in sailor this season, so hopefully he won’t try to fly! As some of you would know, Iain hasn’t been sailing much this season. He needed to find a new crew after the developments with the Bics sailing in the afternoon, and found Holly who was a great fit. Unfortunately though, Iain has been quite unwell and restricted to the beach for most of the season. Of course, this hasn’t stopped Iain from being involved around the place. He has spent a couple of stints in the finishing box, plus worked on the technical issues on Hollidaze. In

addition, he has put his mast on Floating Dollar to see how it goes. (pretty well is the answer). We also welcome Jack Dawkins sailing with Anthony. After sitting on the beach and watching his big sister sailing, finally it is Jack’s turn. Although he is not a fan of the really heavy weather (obviously Anthony’s favourite sailing) he has done very well and is loving the chance to be out on the water and learning all about sailing. Jeremy and Lachy have been the other regular starter this season with regular, solid efforts. The new season has seen a massive change in Lachy. He now really wants to go sailing and is developing into quite a competent little sailor. It’s always great to see kids turn the corner from not really liking it to then loving the sport. A great example of this is Luke Gallagher who up until this season sailed Herons. When Luke first started, Stephen had to roll out all of the tricks to even get him on board the Heron. Now, Luke is competing in every regatta possible and doing very well. Herons. The boat for everyone! Anthony Dvorak Floating Dollar

JAY DEE JABBER

There was renewed enthusiasm within the JD’S, with the addition of junior sailors looking interested in getting onto a JD and the Christmas break certainly recharged some batteries in our juniors. Fast and Furious with Ethan and Sam have been keeping up the pace at the pointy end of the fleet, whilst in hot pursuit,

Flying Orange has been keeping a steady presence on the water, with both William and Leo in the boat. Sondrio has had a sea change with Harrison opting out and pursuing his PSA requirements and Peter and family moving over to Sydney and staying closer to dad, yes all good things come to an end sooner or later. However Campbell and Angus Kilgour were in hot pursuit and will certainly be keeping Sondrio out on the water whilst they practice their sailing till season end. One With The Wind with Jordan and Tom or Asher have been tuning there skills on the course between classes as Jorden is also sailing a 29er. Armed and Dangerous with Erin and Holy have been enjoying the calmer days and certainly enjoying the course and getting their spinnaker up so watch out for this space. Submerged with Matilda and Peter and Indi with Jacqui and Lauren have been hitting the water and getting use to the “different types of ropes“ on the boat and it is great to see new juniors taking on challenges in life that will truly reward them in the future.

The JD group is organising a “Try a JD” sail session to be organised in the coming weeks. In addition, promotion of the Class through Sandra is being organised between PDSC and Nedlands YC, so watch out for more details. Koombana Bay weekend is a breath away and as always this is a great family weekend so good luck to all sailors heading down south for a sail and pick some crabs for me! As always if you have any junior sailors or friends that want to have a sail on a JD please feel free to contact anyone in the club and point them in our direction and a JD will be rigged up and ready in a jiffy with our experienced and keen junior sailor available to give a ride.

Cheers. Alf Parolo.

Wow, what a fantastic Chrissy break we have had. 11 very excited young Bic sailors headed east for the Australian Open Bic Cup. On Sunday the 18th of January 83 young sailors and their families from all over Australia and some from as far away as the USA, Czech Republic and New Zealand, converged on the lawns of Sandringham Yacht Club. Some of our youngsters attending a regatta outside of WA for the very first time. With 83 boats on the start line providing an impressive sight for spectators watching on from the deck of the Yacht Club. The sailors battled it out in a 5 to 15 knot breeze for the Invitation Race.

The PDSC group that travelled to Melbourne Aaron de Longville,

Matthew Hanrahan, Hamish Abercromby, Will Drew, Jonathon

Everett, Genevieve Hennessy, Luke Gallagher, Jack Hanrahan,

Jenna Everett, Rosie Hennessy and Emily de Longville.

After the invitation race the kids were broken into two fleets, a gold fleet and a silver fleet. The 52 strong gold fleet and the 31 strong silver fleet took to the waters of Port Phillip Bay after lunch for some great racing in gusty 15 to 20 knot winds, with seas to match. Day two served up similar conditions before it settled for the remaining two days to a gentle 8 to 12 knot breezes with some nice 30 degree temps. In typical Melbourne weather there was a breeze to suit everyone. Over the 4 days of the regatta the race management team were able to get in a 12 race series and a couple of fun freestyle and adventure races as well. The overall Open Bic Cup was taken out by Queensland’s Kirsten Wadley. RFBYC`s Alice Gallen was the 1st WA boat finishing the series in 8th place overall, followed closely by our very own Genevieve Hennessy in 9th place and Aaron de Longville in 10th. WA sailors also took out the following 6 positions to help round out the overall top 16. A fantastic effort by Jack Hanrahan and Matthew Hanrahan finishing well in their respective age categories for the gold fleet. Matthew being rewarded for his effort with selection in the Open Bic Team Australia for the upcoming World Open Cup to be sailed out of Safety Beach Sailing Club in December. Talented WA youngsters also took out all 3 podium positions in the silver fleet, with Rosalie Hennessy taking out 1st place, Samuel Rose in 2nd (RFBYC) and Will Drew in 3rd (KBSC). Jonathon Everett (5th), Hamish Abercromby (9th), and Luke Gallager (10th), all finishing the series in the top 10. A very big congratulations also go to Emily de Longville and Jenna Everett for putting in a great effort in the silver fleet.

A massive thankyou must go to Travis Burtenshaw and Brien Hennessy for all the time spent with the kids, making sure they were well prepared and supported on the water. And to Steve Gallagher (our very own kid whisperer). As if we hadn’t had enough sailing in those 4 days, rumour has it a few of the kids returned home on Saturday morning just in time to ask “Dad, can we go to the club this afternoon for a sail!” After a week back at school, PDSC again had a great showing at the RPYC Argonaut Series on the 7th and 8th Feb. Genevieve Hennessy taking out 1st place in the gold fleet. The silver fleet podium was again dominated with PDSC sailors with Tom Devine in 1st, Luke Gallagher in 2nd and Jenna Everett in 3rd. Watch out boys Jenna is getting closer!! We are now looking forward to the Open Bic states, being held over the Bunbury Long weekend. Good luck to everyone competing. For those that haven’t decided yet if they heading to Bunbury, it is set to be a great weekend both on and off the water. Lots of fun activities are planned for kids both young and old. Just a note for the Bic Mums and Dads…….make sure you have some swimming/sailing gear! See you all in Bunbury Michelle

JUNIOR COACHING The season is fast coming to a close so I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the dedicated coaching team; Dan Moore, Brien Hennessy, Richard Thomas, Peter Harffey and Dale Oakley along with all the mums and dads who help with rigging, moving boats or just standing in the water offering moral

support. It is the input of each of you that allow our juniors to have fun and refine their sailing skills. This season we have had consistently good numbers and the club is a hive of activity every Saturday. Frequently we have over 30 juniors training. The weather has certainly given us a variety of conditions to sail in. The novice sailors have used capsize drills to stay cool when we have little to no wind which gives them the confidence to recover from a capsize when a bullet goes through and they topple like a pack of cards. This season we have seen many junior sailors and their families come back to the club in the afternoon to enjoy the facilities. Several have worked behind the bar (the parents not the kids) or made sandwiches in the shop, joined in with meal nights and watched the fireworks. All have been made to feel welcome by the senior sailors, which is nothing more than you would expect from this great club. DON’T FORGET THE CLUB IS CLOSED ON THE MARCH LONG WEEKEND Mudlarks The mudlark sailing fleet has been quite small this year as most took up the challenge of the O’Pen Bic at the end of last season. However those racing have continued to improve their skills and will definitely be joined by some eager and talented newcomers as this season progresses. The training fleet can often have 16 sailors learning and refining the basics of sailing. Over Christmas Santa was generous with new boats. In late March we will invite the MBSC and KBSC mudlarks to compete in a series of short races and then the plan is that on Sunday we will go to MBSC and compete in a few more. This is a great way to mix with others and to develop skills quickly. Many great sailors started by just having a go. O’Pen Bics. Well what can I say about these guys… they are all legends. Each one has set and met personal goals, demonstrated great skills and sportsmanship and all while having fun. They have competed up and down the river and across the country. We have winners and place getters across gold and silver fleets. I am a little hesitant to name anyone as it would be dreadful to miss someone. So I would like to give each one three cheers and wish them all well in the upcoming states. JDs I don’t usually make comment on the JDs as they have their own report but I would like to remind club members that these sailors too have had great successes with the sailing goals and we all need to get behind them as the fleet rebuilds. They are great boats and produce great sailors.

CHERUB CHATTER It has been a busy mid season break for all of the cherub class. During the holidays many of the cherub class sailors have competed in various national and world championships (even if not all in cherubs) There were many great result which demonstrates the strength of the sailors in this class and the club. The Cherub Nationals where held in Wallaroo, South Australia. Unfortunately only had one boat made the journey over. However, Todd McVee and Steve Fryer on Smurf Crease performed amazingly and placed seventh overall. Congratulations guys. Whilst many cherub sailors didn’t sail the nationals in Wallaroo, they competed in other competitions. Niko Striega (from Pandamonium) competed in the World Tazer Championship and Richard Thomas and Enfys Jerwood, (from TNT) sailed in the 420 Nationals in Perth. Others (Virginia) went overseas. In recent weeks we have been racing our state championships. Six heats have already been completed with the final three are being held over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of March, at the club. We are very much looking forward to another amazing round of states at the club with plenty of good sailing left, the scores are still close. Over the March long weekend many of the Cherubs are heading down not to Bunbury but Walpole for a regatta. Walpole is a beautiful spot and a great opportunity to sail in different water. Good luck to those heading down. Finally, Cherub sailors each class has ben tasked with donating a basket of goodies to raffle at the Bogan Bingo night. I am happy to organise this but I need your individual contributions, please contact me ASAP. It would also be good to see the Cherubs well represented on the night as the money raised will help our club. Richard

29er

29er Sailors Jye Dvorak and Emilia Horn ready to go to the Kennedy Baptist College School Ball together. It has been a busy summer of sailing in the 29er fleet with considerable improvement being shown in the skills on the water. The season started with a fleet of 5 boats and we continue to see 4 boats on the water most weeks. A very solid effort for such a new fleet to this club. The nationals at Jervoise Bay Sailing Club are now but a memory. For some though, the bruises are now gone, but the memories remain! In what was a very challenging regatta, the sailors from PDSC found the conditions difficult to master. Most of the 16 races were sailed in winds of over 20 knots, with some races in the region of 25 to 20 knots. Unfortunately this was a bit too much for Ben and Harry, Stephen and Dawson and Jye and Oliver. However, the experience was fantastic for all involved, and the learning curve was steep. Soon after the Nationals, the Youth Nationals were held at Fremantle Sailing Club. While no boats from PDSC entered, some were at the event to assist with Safety boats and to continue on the learning experience. Over January, some of the 29ers took up the very generous offer from Matt Harscamp to continue the training that Brad Devine had started prior to Christmas. Those who have attended (including the parents) have reported that the information and coaching has been fantastic. A recent conversation between the sailors and parents of the 29er fleet has set the scene for a lot more training for this fleet for the remainder of the season, and continuing during the winter months. Saturday mornings is the preference so a few little logistical issues will be sorted soon to allow for a great opportunity to get out on the water and develop some high standard sailing skills. We look forward to seeing as many 29ers as possible on the

water every Saturday morning with either Matt or Brad taking the reins and heading up the coaching. Very soon we have the Bunbury weekend. As usual, PDSC will move all sailing to Koombana Bay for the Labour Day long weekend. With a fleet of 29ers in the South West, there is an opportunity to race against a couple of other boats in what is usually lighter sailing conditions than what we have had at the start of the season. See you on the water. Anthony Dvorak

ST VINCENT DE PAUL Dear Judy and Members, The Greenwood conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank you all for your generous support of our 2014 Christmas Appeal. As in previous yerasyour contribution was greatly appreciated. Almost 50 hampers were packed and distributed to disadvantaged members of our community- young families, singles and seniors livingalone.Donations ensure that all requests for our help were answered. Christmas is a busy time of year, as well as being financially demanding, and so it is particularly pleasing that you shouldmake such an effort to help us in this way. Overview

KidSport enables Western Australian children to participate in community sport and recreation, no matter their financial circumstances. Eligible youth aged 5–18 years can apply for financial assistance to contribute towards club fees. The fees will go directly to the registered KidSport clubs through their participating local government. While the primary objective of KidSport is to ensure all Western Australian children can participate in sport and recreation clubs, its secondary objective is to engage these children and their families in the community.
