Commodore’s Comments (continued)

I hope that the chilly weather for the next few days is the end of

“Winter” for our area and that nighttime temperatures turn to

temperate for comfort during the anchor out activities that are an-

ticipated in the weeks ahead. Until then, I suppose we’ll need a

light jacket or sweater to bravely face the Winter cold we’re sub-

ject to here in Southwest Florida. Happy Boating!

Vice Commodore’s Docket

Dennis Weeks [email protected] 321-287-5076

January Events: Our social prior to the January General Meeting will be our Chili Cook-off. Yes, it’s time to dig out that secret family recipe and cook up a pot of chili to share with friends! If you would like to bring a salad or other compliment to chili, please feel free.

Our hosts for this fun event include Joan and Kevin Meyer, along with Alan and Mag-gie Mitchell. Thank you for your help! Ron Miniter has volunteered as part of the cleanup crew. Thanks you, Ron!

February Events:

February is our annual wine and cheese tasting event, hosted by Pat and Ron Pye. For this event, bring your favorite ($10 max) bottle of wine and a cheese to share. Our hosts will have brown bags for your bottle of wine so the judging is a true blind taste test.

March Events:

Looking ahead to March we have a pot luck with crazy hats (host needed!) and our bocce competition (not really a competition for some of us) and picnic. I’m sure some of us will get in some practice for this event! You’ll notice a slight change to the time-line of this event. Due to court availability, we will dine first and then start the bocce tournament. Mark your calendars for 1-4 PM on Friday, March 29.

We are off to a great start and looking forward to a great year!

Cruising News with Captain Will

Will Sirois [email protected] 781-718-2513

Captains Comments:

Our 2019 Cruising season got off to a great start this month with Ruth and Ron leading the way to Franklin Locks Campground. Ruth has a summary below. Thank you Ruth and Ron for your efforts and a cruise well done and en-joyed by all.

February is posing a challenge for Ron and Pat Pye. Looks like they will be successful in rescuing the “Go Fly a Kite” Cruise after a major last minute setback. See the latest from Captain Ron below.

I have also included a long range “heads up” for Gerri Kahn and Arnold Small’s two plus weeks long range cruise, beginning in late April, to Caladesi Island to give you time to plan and if possible join in. Gerri’s note is below.

And be sure to watch the Calendar of Events (to be distributed at the January meeting) for additional cruises coming in March and April. More details will be in future issues of the Mainsheet.

Looking Back:

THE ICICLE CRUISE Franklin Locks Camp Ground Jan 8th, 9th and 10th

Four boats (R and R, Capricorn, Inspiration, and Small Fortune) took off a day early on a sunny Monday. We had a get together that evening. Another warm Tuesday, we all took off in our dinghy's, seeing a large alligator at the mouth of the creek. After almost two hours exploring the creek, JC and Martha investigated a few extra areas and used up their fuel. Will and Sandy came to their rescue and towed them back. Past members Jim and Mary came by in their RV for the day.

After a hearty breakfast on Wednesday, the temperature was dropping, so the guys put up tarps to block the wind. Arriving by car were Dennis, Jen, Ray and their daughter Melissa, Ginny, and Gary and Joyce, friends of JC. We had a great ham dinner with all the fixings and dessert. Surprises galore at the gift exchange. Wait till Dennis gets his gift. Even though it was cold the following morning we had bagels ham and eggs. Not too bad in the sun. After another pot luck dinner we all retreated to R and R to play a laughter-filled game of Guesstures. One more hearty breakfast together and we all headed home in sunshine.

Cruising News with Captain Will (continued)

Current Agenda:

“Go Fly a Kite” Cruise – ‘Tween Waters – Captiva Feb 5 – 6 – 7 + Useppa / Cabbage Key Anchor Out - Feb 7 - 8

Captains Pat and Ron Pye: In view of the sea wall repair work at Palm Island Marina our “Go Fly a Kite” cruise has been moved to the ‘Tween Waters Marina on Captiva. The dates are Tuesday 5th Feb to Thursday 7th Feb. (2 nights). We will have heavy appetizers Tuesday evening and fly our kites Wednesday afternoon, followed by dinner at the ‘Tween Waters restaurant. Call Ron at 239-542-4388 or e-mail [email protected] as soon as possible if you would like to attend by boat. If anyone wishes to come to Captiva by car to join the kite flying competition and dinner on Wednesday, please also let Ron know so we have an accurate count for the dinner reservation. Also, some may wish to extend the cruise to the anchorage off Useppa on Thursday and have dinner at Cabbage Key. Please see the updat-ed coupon for the “Go Fly A Kite” Cruise on page 8.

Looking Ahead:

March 18 – 19 - 20: Sanibel Bight Anchor Out - Rose Ann Hoffman and Paul Steinman

April 15 - 16 - 17: ‘Tween Waters Cruise - Dottie and Fred Hecklau

April 18 - May 4th or beyond: Flex Cruise North … Clearwater / Caladesi Island - Gerri Kahn and Arnold Small

IMPORTANT NOTICE regarding Cruise Coupons:

As has been the policy for many years, boat skippers have been submitting signed coupons for CCSC sponsored Cruises, voluntarily assuming all risks as noted on the coupon.

The CCSC board, at their January meeting, has reaffirmed that it is a requirement that a signed cou-pon* must be submitted by each boat skipper to the Cruise Captain in order to be accepted as part of said cruise.

This shall be required, even if there is no cost involved or need for other specific information. Cruise Leaders shall be responsible for insuring that all skippers adhere to this requirement.

Language found in a typical coupon is as follows: “agreeing to hold harmless and indemnify against all losses and/or claims against CCSC and cruise leaders”

Will Sirois, 2019 Cruising Fleet Captain

On April 18th, directly after the ‘Tween Waters cruise, we will be leaving on a cruise to Caladesi Island.

Caladesi Island is just north of Clearwater Beach. It's a bridgeless island and state park with spectacular,

deserted beaches and fabulous shelling. It also has a downright cheap marina (50 cents to a dollar/foot,

including electricity and water). This is planned as a +/- 2 week cruise but members can go part way or

join up with us later. More details next month.
