Common Core Journal Prompts:

Informational Resources

Thanks for checking out my Common Core Reading Journal Prompts! There are 19

journal prompts to use with ANY nonfiction text! These journal prompts can be used

time and time again to reinforce the skills needed to comprehend the nonfiction

texts they are reading on a daily basis. These journal prompts are based on the

unpacked CCSS Reading: Informational Resources for second and third grade.

There are several ways these can be used:

Exit Slip: At the end of the class, have students answer the question based on the

passage that was read during whole class or guided reading lessons.

Read-to-Self Reflection Journal Prompt: Instead of having students read their “Just

Right Books”, have them respond and reflect on what they have read during the last

5-7 minutes of Read to Self. You can collect the journals periodically, or meet with

students during conferencing to discuss their thinking.

Informal Formative Assessment: Use these as a quick check before guided reading or

small group, or after a whole group mini lesson.

Bell Ringer: Start the day off using these journal prompts to get their brain juices

flowing. Share their answers during Morning Meeting to introduce the other children

to the texts they are all reading.
