Commonwealth Walkway 2
Message from the Mayor
With Australia being a leading member of the Commonwealth, and the Gold Coast having proudly hosted the XXI Commonwealth Games in 2018 (GC2018), the Commonwealth Walkway is another wonderful addition to our city, to be enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike.
The Walkway takes walkers on a fascinating tour of our beautiful city, beginning and ending at two of our important civic locations, and in between visiting both historic and scenic sites. The tour takes you past points of interest while enjoying some of our most spectacular scenery and waterside locations.
This project is a legacy of GC2018, so join in with thousands of people around the world who are walking their own city’s unique Commonwealth Walkway. For many years to come people of all ages will enjoy the Commonwealth Walkway at their own pace, whilst experiencing some of the great sites, and iconic locations, throughout our coastal city. Enjoy!
Tom Tate, Mayor
Commonwealth Walkway
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Walkway, the first of its kind outside the UK, was created in partnership between City of Gold Coast and The Outdoor Trust. The Outdoor Trust is creating 100 Walkways all across the Commonwealth.
Our city hosted the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, the biggest sporting and cultural event ever held in Queensland. We welcomed 6600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories.
The Commonwealth Walkway is a lasting legacy of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The route offers an insight into the story of our modern city, nestled between picturesque coastline and world heritage-listed rainforests.
The Commonwealth Games Federation recognises the Walkways as a permanent legacy of The Queen’s Baton Relay which visits every Commonwealth nation and territory in advance of the Commonwealth Games.
Passports are available at all City of Gold Coast Customer Service Centres.

Matey the dog statue
Heading further west along Cavill Avenue, you will come across a statue of Matey, a homeless kelpie cross. He first appeared in Cavill Avenue after the end of World War II.
He was befriended by the locals and soon took up residence outside Jim Cavill’s Surfers Paradise Hotel where he would greet patrons each day.
At the end of Cavill Avenue, turn left and walk down to the next intersection. Cross the road heading west.
