COMMUNION ATHOME

COVID-19 EDITION

Communion back then

The original Lord's Supper was to be taken

in the context of an actual meal—a sacred,

covenant feast. The bread and wine point

back to Jesus’ death on the cross to pay for

sin. The meal adds a forward look. When

celebrated as a feast in a joyful wedding

atmosphere, the Lord’s Supper typifies the

wedding supper of the Lamb. It is a regular

reminder of Jesus’ promise to return and

eat it with us.

Within some denominations, every meal

that is eaten is considered Holy

Communion.

The Fellowship Meal

The church right now is in unprecedented times and this calls for

innovation. Our mission remains the same but our methods need to

adapt.

As we've just learn, communion was to be celebrated as a full meal with

believers - at times in their own homes. During Covid-19, Jacksonville is

under a "Stay at Home" executive order which has created what some

believe to be a problem but I see it as a great opportunity.

We have the opportunity to become the spiritual leaders of our homes as

Christ intended and this includes leading our family in the practice of the

Communion meal.

The Nazarene tradition states that only an ordained minister can

administer the sacraments of the Lord Supper but I believe that God has a

way of breaking our traditions and bringing us back to the basics.

The Christians who administered the Lord Supper in the 1st century were

not what we would considered as "ordained" ministers but the Bible tells

us in 1 Peter 2:9 that all Christians are "Royal Priests", which means that in

the eyes of God - all Christians are Ordained Ministers!

You have the authority to be the Spiritual Leader of your home and

celebrate the Lords Supper with your family!

Our Tradition

Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26.

Examine yourself - are you living the way Christ demands?

Stop & Pray together before the meal: Ask God for forgiveness of sins &

thank Him for His sacrifice,

Eat your meal while being thankful for what God has done in the past

and also being hopeful for what God is going to do in the future.

Although the Lord's Supper can be any meal - it should not be treated as

just "any other meal". Paul rebuked the Corinthians for eating the Lord's

supper in this manner (Please read 1 Corinthians 11:17-34).

Here is a suggested process for celebrating the Lord's Supper at home.
