Community Baby Shower Outreach
Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program:
Reaching out
Susanna Lam, MPH, CHES
Goal• To target pregnant women to help reduce the risk
factors for childhood lead poisoning
Objectives• On a quarterly basis, hold a baby shower
with a neighboring facility to inform pregnant women and their guests about the dangers of Lead Poisoning to their unborn child
• During our quarterly attendance at the baby shower, we will provide a 20-30 minute educational piece on Lead Poisoning in Children
• At the conclusion of each baby shower pregnant mothers receive a gift
Objectives Continued...• During the educational piece, mothers and
family members will: – understand the importance of blood
lead screening and learn to identify various sources of lead exposure
– understand practical strategies that protect children from lead exposure during early growth and development
– understand rights as tenants in an environment with potential lead hazards
High Risk Areas
• 2000 Census Data (children 1-2 years old, pre-1950 housing)
• Birth Records 2003 (Medi-Cal deliveries)
• Select Top 10 Cities which have more than one high-risk CT, and high number of EBLs

Education
• Bilingual Presentation (Co-taught)• Lead Bingo Game
Booths for Educational Resources• Once a month, invited to St. Francis Medical
Center to set up a booth• To provide information to women of child bearing
age not in attendance at the educational sessions
